Book Synopsis Compassionate Soldier by : Jerry Borrowman
Download or read book Compassionate Soldier written by Jerry Borrowman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compassionate Soldier illuminates some of the most fascinating and yet largely unknown stories of men and women whose humanity led them to perform courageous acts of mercy and compassion amid the chaos and carnage of war. Arranged by war from the American Revolution to the Iraq War and global in perspective, it features extraordinary stories of grace under fire from valiant soldiers and noncombatants who rose above the inhumanity of lethal conflict and chose compassion, even knowing their actions could put their lives and liberty at risk. Included in this collection are the stories of Richard Kirkland, a Confederate soldier during the Civil War who disobeyed orders and brought blankets and water to the wounded from both North and South during the Battle of Fredericksburg; Patrick Ferguson, a British soldier during the American Revolution who had the chance to kill George Washington, but refused to shoot a man in the back; and Oswald Boelcke, a German WWI flying ace who was one of the most influential tacticians of early air combat, but was known for making sure the airmen he shot down made it to the ground alive. These inspirational stories illustrate that even in the midst of unspeakable horrors of war, acts of kindness, mercy, compassion, and humanity can prevail and, in doing so, expand our conventional thinking of honor and battlefield glory.

Download or read book Wronged written by Lilie Chouliaraki and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is being a victim such a potent identity today? Who claims to be a victim, and why? How have such claims changed in the past century? Who benefits and who loses from the struggles over victimhood in public culture? In this timely and incisive book, Lilie Chouliaraki shows how claiming victimhood is about claiming power: who deserves to be protected as a victim and who should be punished as a perpetrator. She argues that even though victimhood has long been used to excuse violence and hierarchy, social media platforms and far-right populism have turned victimhood into a weapon of the privileged. Drawing on recent examples such as the overturning of Roe v. Wade, movements like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter, and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as historical ones from the major wars of the twentieth century and the Civil Rights Movement, Wronged reveals why claims of victimization are so effective at reinforcing instead of alleviating inequalities of class, gender, and race. Unless we come to recognize the suffering of the vulnerable for what it is—a matter not of victimhood but of injustice—Chouliaraki powerfully warns, the culture of victimhood will continue to perpetuate old exclusions and enable further injuries.

Download or read book Locating Global Order written by Bruno Charbonneau and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 9/11, policy-makers and observers have questioned whether America should don the mantle of empire for the sake of world peace, or whether peace will come through world government. Locating Global Order questions the very idea that the political order is hierarchical, with state and international institutions at the top and groups and individuals at the bottom. Chapters examining various case studies on Canada's role in the construction and maintenance of order domestically and internationally reveal that the global order post-9/11 is not exclusively American allied powers are a key component of its hegemony.
Download or read book Children in War written by Elon Perry and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-06-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Elon Perry uniquely combines the narrative of a challenging childhood amidst wartime struggles with the gripping tale of military service in a commando unit. The book differs from other books on the subject because the plot revolves around two themes: a difficult and impoverished childhood during times of war, and military service in a commando unit, carried out with the aim of exacting revenge on the enemy and featuring vivid and detailed descriptions of battles. In the book, real stories and events are infused, including daring operations from the battlefield. Some of these accounts have never before been published, and only today, 40 years after the events, has the Israeli censorship allowed them to be shared. This story can be an inspiration to people who find themselves in desperate situations. They can learn how against all odds and in any given situation one can survive difficulties, as long as one has the will, perseverance, and belief that anything is possible.

Book excerpt: It's 1967 during the Vietnam War. Zack Tonakis (White) is a young medic/psych tech who along with his buddy, Robert Turner, (Black) is assigned to the psychiatric ward of a stateside Army hospital. The ward houses young soldiers who are depressed; paranoid; obsessive-compulsive; a sociopath; and even a catatonic. Others, like Joker Berkowski who's described as "crazy funny," are there for a "failure to adjust" to Army life. A major, not of the medical profession, is brought in on temporary assignment while a qualified replacement is sought. The major, a short-timer, wants nothing to jeopardize his coming retirement. His right hand, Sergeant Helms, views patients as cowards and phonies. An inept ward psychiatrist is of little help to the patients. A patient escapes during a ball game prompting the major to shut down all outdoor activities. His mantra becomes: "Keep them invisible." The first story, "The Ball Game", introduces the soldiers who will have their own stories told in the collection. The main protagonist, psych tech Zack Tonakis, will follow the soldiers throughout the novel. Zack carries his own demons from the past.
