Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this amazing work, Westbrook generously shares with us the tools he has used and created over the last 30 years to bring comfort "" physical, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual "" to the dying, the families of the dying, and their professional and lay caregivers. Using the narrative style of Native Americans, Westbrook role-models his tools through a series of powerful, poignant, and moving stand-alone stories which illustrate precisely how to journey and navigate some of the most difficult End-of-Life situations, and to do so with Grace, equanimity, and deep partnership. Whether those dying are young or old, male or female, sober or loaded, sheltered or homeless, alone or surrounded, appreciative or combative, terrified or curious, rich or poor, or any other pairings you can imagine, this book engages the reader in ways to quickly establish trust and rapport and to then use humor, curiosity, reframing, and other tools to challenge, support, and co-journey with patients and families in ways that are transformative. The beauty of this book is that each brief chapter is a stand-alone teaching tool that can be used independently of the rest of the book. It can be used as a supplementary text for students, and in continuing education workshops for professionals. It can be used by the dying themselves and/or by their families. It can be read in quiet contemplation, or aloud as a stimulus for conversations of depth and weight and of hope and transformation. The power of this book and its tools lies in its role-modeling of how to simply use our humanity "" our suffering, vulnerability, courage, humor, compassion, passion, curiosity, honor, love, and imperfection to create deep and lasting connection as we co-journey toward the End-of-Life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the scope and sophistication of contemporary health care, there is increasing international concern about the perceived lack of compassion in its delivery. Citing evidence that when the basic needs of patients are attended to with kindness and understanding, recovery often takes place at a faster level, patients cope more effectively with the self-management of chronic disorders and can more easily overcome anxiety associated with various disorders, this book looks at how good care can be put back into the process of caring. Beginning with an introduction to the historical values associated with the concept of compassion, the text goes on to provide a bio-psycho-social theoretical framework within which the concept might be further explained. The third part presents thought-provoking case studies and explores the implementation and impact of compassion in a range of healthcare settings. The fourth part investigates the role that organizations and their structures can play in promoting or hindering the provision of compassion. The book concludes by discussing how compassion may be taught and evaluated, and suggesting ways for increasing the attention paid to compassion in health care. Developing a multi-disciplinary theory of compassionate care, and underpinned by empirical examples of good practice, this volume is a valuable resource for all those interesting in understanding and supporting compassion in health care, including advanced students, academics and practitioners within medicine, nursing, psychology, allied health, sociology and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may take a few more decades, but ‘soon enough,’ A.I. will turn into super-A.I. This is an artificial intelligence which in all areas of what is now seen as ‘human intelligence’ approaches this, then surpasses it. After that, it will keep growing exponentially. In the meantime, at relatively short notice, humanity will encounter a challenging A.I. bi-bottleneck: 1) humans possibly misusing A.I. in a big way, and 2) A.I. spiraling into many directions of which any unfortunate one may be enough for disaster. Will we control A.I. or will A.I. dominate us? Let’s hope this is the wrong question. Because if it’s the right question, and given enough time, there is no shred of a doubt about the answer. Still, of course, we need to give it our best shot not to be dominated by an evil force. We should strive for control. At the same time, transcending the question opens up the domain of Compassion. This gradually makes thinking in terms of ‘control’ and ‘domination’ in human – A.I. interactions obsolete. We will together strive for a better world within an alignment of our values. But what are the real human values? There are cultural and individual differences. Moreover, what seem to be anyone’s values may be a superficial layer above deeper values, which are not necessarily congruent with conscious awareness. So, the human/A.I. value alignment question will be: how to align what? I write in The Journey about Compassion as the striving to approach these values in their deeper sense. They can subsequently be realized for each individual in two directions: relief of deep suffering and enhancement of inner growth. Both notions are to be clarified at the individual level. Compassionate A.I. is (the striving towards) an A.I. that can help us to know and to realize ourselves in-depth. The beauty is that this way, human/A.I. value alignment and further development of A.I. can intrinsically go hand in hand. Lisa is a software coaching chat-bot that is being developed specifically with this goal: helping humans and A.I. in Compassionate ways to become healthier, stronger and more effectively Compassionate towards near ones as well as all sentient beings. In this book, ‘super-A.I.’ is the future kind of A.I. that may be able – but not necessarily! – to act Compassionately. We don’t have to wait for that, for Compassionate A.I. to become important. Already, humans can use A.I. more or less Compassionately. From what point is it relevant as a characteristic of the A.I. system itself, regardless of how humans use the A.I.? There is no steep border. Long before super-A.I., the first systems in which it becomes more pertinent, are those in which Compassion is part of the purpose. That is, systems that in communication with users are meant to give an effectively Compassionate experience. To understand where Compassionate A.I. may be heading towards, we need to understand Compassion. This leads us on a journey, starting on the one hand from ‘data’ and on the other hand from drive-to-thrive (life itself). On this journey, we encounter many insights about intelligence, consciousness, drive-to-thrive, non-conscious processing... The end of the journey lies in full Compassion. Hopefully, this is the future for A.I. as well as humanity.

Book excerpt: Dear Anita has always held Aiki Dragon’s spirit within her heart, giving her protection and guidance for her journey as a warrior. She was born into a family blessed with love, humor, trust, and various philosophies, and she learned how to become one with all that surrounded her. She discovered the universe’s power of love, for it dwelled within her, along with her enthusiasm and high energy. As a child, Dear Anita learned to communicate with a playmate who spoke another language, fly a tricycle, and stand up bravely to the neighborhood bully. She became one of the first and youngest female pilots and aviation attorneys. Then the universe revealed her healing powers, allowing her to become a Chinese medicine doctor. In a time of self-reflection, Dear Anita learned of the beautiful goddess Kannon and was introduced to Aiki Dragon and the world of dragons, where she discovered her Dragon Queen Ryu healing powers. Simultaneously a book from her law school years, on the harmony and techniques of Aikido, fell back into her hands and created a forever path upon her warrior’s journey—where compassion, healing, love, and gratitude unite with the universe’s plan of perfect unison…and we are all one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International #1 Best Seller Business is the most pervasive and influential force on the planet today. Its activities transcend national and international borders. Its activities are not unduly constrained by financial, political, cultural, ethnic, or religious concerns. The net of this is that business, as a prevalent and important force, has a moral responsibility to guide, enhance, value, and nourish the existence of all that it encounters. In the world today, the absolute opposite of this occurs. Business today seldom assesses the efficacy of its activities through the lens of anything but profit. The true purpose of business is to uplift the experience of existing. It is not to make owners wealthy. It is not to produce ever-cheaper goods and services. It is not to keep an avaricious and toxic economic model afloat. And it is certainly not (with no apology to Milton Friedman) to make a profit. From our perspective, business is nothing less than a spiritual discipline, it requires the same integrity, commitment, intentionality, courage, discipline, and compassion as any other spiritual discipline. Spiritual disciplines honor life, in all its forms, as having innate and intrinsic value simply because it exists. It's the honoring of this value-the ennobling of this value-that is called forth when we approach business as a spiritual undertaking. It is the compassionate thing to do.

Over the following fifteen years, Bill served a diverse group of the poor through a ministry started by Sister Alice Callaghan and All Saints Episcopal Church. The ministry was called Union Station, and it brought to the doorstep of the church a multitude of people and their unique stories. In his "Letters from a Street Minister," Bill captures the trauma of these lives with humor and pathos. These vignettes give us valuable insights into the hopes and dreams, the successes and the failures, of neighbors in need. Drawing upon a legion of volunteers, the support of the interfaith community, the participation of government and business, and thousands of individual donors, Union Station became a model of how a community can address the social-service needs of the poor.

Book excerpt: In today’s world, many young people feel as though life is a constant rush from one demand to the next. Whether it’s the pressures of school, work, relationships, or even social media, it can sometimes feel like there’s no space to just be. Yet, as Thích Nhất Hạnh, a revered Zen master and peace activist, has taught us, within each of us is a place of peace—a place that, once found, can transform how we live, love, and understand ourselves and the world around us. This book is a gentle guide on discovering that place of peace through mindfulness. Mindfulness is not a quick solution to life’s challenges, nor is it a way to escape from our worries. Instead, it is a way to live fully, appreciating each moment, and learning to respond to life’s ups and downs with clarity, compassion, and courage. This journey may feel challenging at times, but it’s one worth taking because it leads to a life of true freedom and happiness. In these pages, you will find insights drawn from Thích Nhất Hạnh’s teachings, along with practical exercises designed to fit into the busiest of lives. Each chapter explores a different aspect of mindful living—whether it's embracing self-love, practicing kindness, or finding purpose in our daily actions. I invite you to join this journey toward living with a peaceful heart and an open mind. May these practices help you find calm amid the chaos, strength in times of struggle, and joy in every precious moment of life.
