Book excerpt: Health care professionals typically use resting metabolic rate (RMR) via indirect calorimetry to determine a person's energy expenditure. RMR via indirect calorimetry is determined by either by oxygen consumption (VO2) or oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production (VCO2). Traditional indirect calorimetry measurements involve an expensive, heavy piece of equipment that requires careful calibration. The recent development of a handheld indirect calorimeter makes it easier to measure RMR at a lower cost. Few investigators have compared the effectiveness of the new handheld device to traditional indirect calorimetry equipment. PURPOSE: To validate the accuracy and precision of the handheld indirect calorimetry device by simultaneously comparing its measurements to those from a traditional indirect calorimeter. METHODS: Healthy, free-living subjects (n=50), ages 18 years and older, were tested simultaneously with both indirect calorimeters. All subjects breathed through the handheld device using a mouthpiece and noseclips were applied to prevent leaks. The handheld indirect calorimetry device was placed inside a canopy with the exhaled gas from the handheld positioned directly over the inlet to the port delivering gases to the traditional device2s mixing chamber. All expired gases were simultaneously collected into the traditional device via a canopy. During the measurement, VO2 and RMR were continuously recorded to a personal computer. RESULTS: Mean oxygen consumption and RMR did not significantly differ between the two devices, with a mean difference of .58 ł 15.33 ml per min (p = 0.790) and 4.66 ł 113.39 kcal per day (p = 0.773) and an absolute difference of 12.3 ł 8.99 ml per min and 86.58 ł 72.32 kcal per day, respectively. Correlation coefficients for oxygen consumption and RMR were 0.945 and 0.941, respectively. CONCLUSION: No significant difference was found between the measurements obtained from both indirect calorimetry devices. These findings suggest that the handheld indirect calorimetry device provides an accurate and reliable measure of oxygen consumption and RMR measurements for spontaneously breathing subjects.

Book excerpt: Older adults with chewing and swallowing difficulties frequently report increased fatigue and effort, or energy expenditure, during eating. Energy is defined as the ability to perform work. It is most accurately measured through an examination of the gaseous composition of inhaled and exhaled air at rest and during activity using laboratory-based indirect calorimetry. There is a need for a valid measure of energy expenditure that can be used to document the effort involved in eating and swallowing in natural contexts. The purpose of the current study was to determine the concurrent validity of the portable SenseWear® system compared to indirect calorimetry during a simulated eating task. Nineteen university students served as participants. Each was connected simultaneously to indirect calorimetry and SenseWear® systems. Energy expenditure was obtained while participants chewed gum and swallowed repeatedly. Pearson product-moment correlations showed a close relationship (p

Book excerpt: Data on nutritional status of human populations are periodically needed, as well as their relationships with anthropometry, body composition, body image and energy expenditure, and also with health lifestyle outcomes. All these parameters contribute jointly to give a complete knowledge on dietary and lifestyle habits, and hence how to proceed to improve it in order to enjoy an optimal healthy status. So, you are kindly invited to submit proposals for manuscripts that fit the objectives and the topics of this Nutrients Special issue. The aim of this proposed Nutrients Special Issue on "Anthropometry, Body Composition and Resting Energy Expenditure in Humans" is to publish selected papers detailing specific aspects of anthropometric, body composition and energy expenditure data in human populations and their relationships with nutritional status, as well as nutritional surveys and trials that examine measured differences or changes in these parameters are also cordially invited.

Book excerpt: Feedstuff Evaluation contains the proceedings of the 50th University of Nottingham Easter School in Agricultural Sciences, held at Sutton Bonington in July 1989. The book presents papers discussing a wide range of topics on the accurate evaluation of feedstuffs for livestock. Initially, systems of expressing the nutritive value of feeds are considered. Modifications to feeding value as influenced by animal factors including intake and palatability are discussed. Specific dietary ingredients, being plant polysaccharides, fats, minerals and vitamins are detailed. Prediction of the nutritive value of compound feeds and individual feeds through classical wet chemistry and the more recent NIR is assuming considerable importance in the rapid evaluation of diets. Associated with these developments is an appreciation of the relevance of both inter- and intra-laboratory variation in determinations. Finally, the need to collate information into an interactive data-base is being actively pursued. It is evident that safety of animal feeds is becoming an increasingly topical issue and the last session considered the relevance of naturally-occurring toxic factors, residues, mycotoxins and, finally, animal pathogens. Veterinarians, farmers, farm administrators, and those involved in every aspect of nutrient supply to animals will find the compendium very insightful and informative.

Book excerpt: This book provides energy efficiency quantitative analysis and optimal methods for discrete manufacturing systems from the perspective of global optimization. In order to analyze and optimize energy efficiency for discrete manufacturing systems, it uses real-time access to energy consumption information and models of the energy consumption, and constructs an energy efficiency quantitative index system. Based on the rough set and analytic hierarchy process, it also proposes a principal component quantitative analysis and a combined energy efficiency quantitative analysis. In turn, the book addresses the design and development of quantitative analysis systems. To save energy consumption on the basis of energy efficiency analysis, it presents several optimal control strategies, including one for single-machine equipment, an integrated approach based on RWA-MOPSO, and one for production energy efficiency based on a teaching and learning optimal algorithm. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable guide for students, teachers, engineers and researchers in the field of discrete manufacturing systems.
