Book excerpt: To be able to achieve their physics goals, future neutrino-oscillation experiments will need to reconstruct the neutrino energy with very high accuracy. In this work, we analyze how the energy reconstruction may be affected by realistic detection capabilities, such as energy resolutions, efficiencies, and thresholds. This allows us to estimate how well the detector performance needs to be determined a priori in order to avoid a sizable bias in the measurement of the relevant oscillation parameters. We compare the kinematic and calorimetric methods of energy reconstruction in the context of two [nu][mu] → [nu][mu] disappearance experiments operating in different energy regimes. For the calorimetric reconstruction method, we find that the detector performance has to be estimated with an O(10%) accuracy to avoid a significant bias in the extracted oscillation parameters. Thus, in the case of kinematic energy reconstruction, we observe that the results exhibit less sensitivity to an overestimation of the detector capabilities.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the author’s work at the Double Chooz Experiment, from 2010 to 2013, the goal of which was to search for electronic anti-neutrino disappearance close to nuclear power plant facilities as a result of neutrino oscillation. Starting with a brief review of neutrino oscillation and the most important past experimental findings in this field, the author subsequently provides a full and detailed description of a neutrino detector, from simulation aspects to detection principles, as well as the data analysis procedure used to extract the oscillation parameters. The main results in this book are 1) an improvement on the mixing angle, θ13, uncertainty by combining two data-sets from neutrino event selection: neutron capture on gadolinium and on hydrogen; and 2) the first measurement of the effective squared mass difference by combining the current reactor neutrino experimental data from Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO and taking advantage of their different reactor-to-detector distances. The author explains how these methods of combining data can be used to estimate these two values. Each method results in the best possible sensitivity for the oscillation parameters with regard to reactor neutrinos. They can be used as a standard method on the latest data releases from the current experiments.

Book excerpt: Neutrinos are neutral, fundamental particles that oscillate, or change flavor, while they travel. This phenomenon means that neutrinos deviate from the Standard Model prediction that they are massless, creating an exciting window into physics exploration beyond the Standard Model. Understanding neutrino oscillation and constraining their behavior is crucial to furthering the understanding of these particles and how they fit, or do not fit, into the Standard Model. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has been detecting neutrinos for more than 10 years, leading to a large sample of atmospheric neutrino data available for studying neutrino oscillations. Reconstructing the neutrino interactions, such as the neutrino's energy and direction, are key to constraining neutrino oscillation. A fast and robust reconstruction method was developed using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and optimized to reconstruct parameters necessary to both reconstruct and isolate a pure atmospheric neutrino sample using the IceCube detector. This work compares the performance of this reconstruction to the current likelihood-based reconstruction currently used in IceCube. An analysis of the muon neutrino disappearance is then pursued using 9.28 years of neutrino data. The analysis shows competitive projected sensitivity, the ability to account for numerous systematics, and robust recovery of the physics parameters under statistical and systematic variations. While the 9.28 year sample is still under collaboration review, one year of the total data is used to perform a confirmatory study on the CNN reconstruction and sample. The oscillation parameter constraints from this one year analysis are in alignment with past IceCube analyses and other neutrino experiments within one sigma. This opens the pathway to use the CNN reconstruction for future analyses studying low energy neutrinos on IceCube.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MINOS Experiment consists of two steel-scintillator calorimeters, sampling the long baseline NuMI muon neutrino beam. It was designed to make a precise measurement of the 'atmospheric' neutrino mixing parameters, [Delta]m2 atm. and sin2 (2 atm.). The Near Detector measures the initial spectrum of the neutrino beam 1km from the production target, and the Far Detector, at a distance of 735 km, measures the impact of oscillations in the neutrino energy spectrum. Work performed to validate the quality of the data collected by the Near Detector is presented as part of this thesis. This thesis primarily details the results of a v[mu] disappearance analysis, and presents a new sophisticated fitting software framework, which employs a maximum likelihood method to extract the best fit oscillation parameters. The software is entirely decoupled from the extrapolation procedure between the detectors, and is capable of fitting multiple event samples (defined by the selections applied) in parallel, and any combination of energy dependent and independent sources of systematic error. Two techniques to improve the sensitivity of the oscillation measurement were also developed. The inclusion of information on the energy resolution of the neutrino events results in a significant improvement in the allowed region for the oscillation parameters. The degree to which sin2 (2[theta])= 1.0 could be disfavoured with the exposure of the current dataset if the true mixing angle was non-maximal, was also investigated, with an improved neutrino energy reconstruction for very low energy events. The best fit oscillation parameters, obtained by the fitting software and incorporating resolution information were.

Book excerpt: There is now substantial evidence that the proper description of neutrino involves two representations related by the 3 x 3 PMNS matrix characterized by either distinct mass or flavor. The parameters of this mixing matrix, three angles and a phase, as well as the mass differences between the three mass eigenstates must be determined experimentally. The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search experiment is designed to study the flavor composition of a beam of muon neutrinos as it travels between the Near Detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory at 1 km from the target, and the Far Detector in the Soudan iron mine in Minnesota at 735 km from the target. From the comparison of reconstructed neutrino energy spectra at the near and far location, precise measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters from muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance are expected. It is very important to know the neutrino flux coming from the source in order to achieve the main goal of the MINOS experiment: precise measurements of the atmospheric mass splitting.

Book excerpt: The NOvA experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based out of Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory that uses two liquid scintillator detectors, one at Fermilab (the \near" detector) and a second 14 kton detector in northern Minnesota (the \far" detector.) The primary physics goals of the NOvA experiment are to measure neutrino mixing parameters through both the v[mu] disappearance and ve appearance channels using neutrinos from the newly upgraded NuMI beam line. The NOvA v[mu] disappearance analysis can significantly improve the world's best measurement of sin2 [theta] 23. This analysis proceeds by using the measured v[mu] charged-current energy spectrum in the near detector to predict the spectrum in the far detector, and comparing this to the measured spectrum to obtain a best fit for the oscillation parameters sin2 [theta] 23 and [Delta]m2 32. Since this fit is governed by the shape of the energy spectrum, the best fit will be maximized by obtaining the best possible energy resolution for the individual neutrino events. This dissertation describes an alternate v[mu] disappearance analysis technique for the NOvA experiment, based on the idea that estimating the energy resolution of the individual events will allow them to be separated into different energy resolution samples in order to improve the final fit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MINOS is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. A manmade beam of predominantly muon neutrinos is detected both 1 km and 735 km from the production point by two functionally identical detectors. A comparison of the energy spectra measured by the two detectors shows the energy-dependent disappearance of muon neutrinos characteristic of oscillations and allows a measurement of the parameters governing the oscillations. This thesis presents work leading to measurements of disappearance in the 6% {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} background in that beam. A calibration is developed to correct for time-dependent changes in the responses of both detectors, reducing the corresponding uncertainty on hadronic energy measurements from 1.8% to 0.4% in the near detector and from 0.8% to 0.4% in the far detector. A method of selecting charged current {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} events is developed, with purities (efficiencies) of 96.5% (74.4%) at the near detector, and 98.8% (70.9%) at the far detector in the region below 10 GeV reconstructed antineutrino energy. A method of using the measured near detector neutrino energy spectrum to predict that expected at the far detector is discussed, and developed for use in the {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} analysis. Sources of systematic uncertainty contributing to the oscillation measurements are discussed. In the far detector, 32 charged current {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} events are observed below a reconstructed energy of 30 GeV, compared to an expectation of 47.8 for [Delta]{bar m}{sub atm}2 = [Delta]m{sub atm}2, sin2(2{bar [theta]}23) = sin2(2{theta}23). This deficit, in such a low-statistics sample, makes the result difficult to interpret in the context of an oscillation parameter measurement. Possible sources for the discrepancy are discussed, concluding that considerably more data are required for a definitive solution. Running MINOS with a dedicated {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} beam would be the ideal continuation of this work.

Book excerpt: Neutrino energy measurements are a crucial component in the experimental study of neutrino oscillations. These measurements are done through the reconstruction of neutrino interactions and energy measurements of their products. This thesis presents the development of a technique to reconstruct the energy of muons from neutrino interactions in the NO$\mathrm{\nu}$A experiment. This is achieved through the understanding of muon multiple scattering within the NO$\mathrm{\nu}$A detectors. This technique is particularly useful for estimating energies of muons which escape the detector.

It measures the flux from the predominately muon neutrino NuMI beam first 1 km from beam start and then again 735 km later using a pair of steel scintillator tracking calorimeters. The comparison of measured neutrino energy spectra at our Far Detector with the prediction based on our Near Detector measurement allows for a measurement of the parameters which define neutrino oscillations. This thesis will describe the most recent measurement of muon neutrino disappearance in the NuMI muon neutrino beam using the MINOS experiment.

Book excerpt: This thesis measures the muon neutrino oscillation at T2K using the first data of the experiment. It concentrates on developing an original selection at Super-Kamionde, the T2K far detector, that improves the performance of the current standard selection. Anew, more precise measurement of the oscillation parameters sin22823 and ~m~2 is performed using this new selection. T2K is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located in Japan which began data taking in January 2010. It uses the world's most powerful ac- celerator generated beam of muon neutrinos intersected by two detectors. The near detector is located 280 m from the beam source while Super-Kamiokande lies 295 km away. Super-Kamiokande is a 50 kt water Cherenkov detector which measures the neutrino beam after oscillation. The determination of the oscillation pa- rameters comes from looking at the disappearance of muon neutrinos from the beam. For this purpose event selection at Super-Kamiokande is optimised for neutrino flavour identification and energy reconstruction, specifically, select- ing muon neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic events, primarily with single muon-like Cherenkov rings produced by the outgoing muon. This thesis eval- " uates two new methods of enhancing the selection to obtain a higher sensi- tivity from the data, firstly by exploring a multi-variate analysis approach to charged-current quasi-elastic selection, and secondly through the exploration of an additional charged-current single charged pion channel. Out of these only the multivariate based selection produced an improvement in the sensitivity to oscillation with respect to the standard selection. A first analysis of the data collected until March 11th 2011 using the above described improvement is presented in this thesis. A value of 2.68~~:ig x 10-3 eV2 was recorded for ~m~2 and 0.999~~:~~~ for sin22823.

Book excerpt: Recently a new method for determining the neutrino mass hierarchy by comparing the effective values of the atmospheric?m2 measured in the electron neutrino disappearance channel,?m2(ee), with the one measured in the muon neutrino disappearance channel,?m2(??), was proposed. If?m2(ee) is larger (smaller) than?m2 (??) the hierarchy is of the normal (inverted) type. We re-examine this proposition in the light of two very high precision measurements:?m2(??) that may be accomplished by the phase II of the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment, for example, and?m2(ee) that can be envisaged using the novel Moessbauer enhanced resonant {bar {nu}}{sub e} absorption technique. Under optimistic assumptions for the systematic uncertainties of both measurements, we estimate the parameter region of (?13,?) in which the mass hierarchy can be determined. If?13 is relatively large, sin2 2?13 ≈> 0.05, and both of?m2(ee) and?m2(??) can be measured with the precision of ≈ 0.5 % it is possible to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at> 95% CL for 0.3? ≈

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a valuable insight into various aspects of the ongoing work directed at measuring neutrino mass. It took twenty years to refute the assertions of Bethe and Peierls that neutrinos were not observable, but it has since been realised that much can be learnt from these particles. The moral is, as Fiorini argues here, that the study of neutrinos was and remains demanding but rewarding. Subjects addressed in this volume include; clarifying the meaning of the Klapdor-Kleingrothaus results, probing the Majorana nature of neutrinos, observing lepton number violating effects for the first time, studying the end point of the spectrum in the search for neutrino masses and speculating whether it is possible to measure neutrino masses in cosmology. Lectures are enriched with rich historical overviews and valuable introductory material. Attention is also given to theoretical topics such as the evolution of the concept of mass in particle physics, a status report on neutrino oscillations and current discussion on neutrino masses. The reader is further reminded that neutrino masses may also have some bearing on the very origin of the matter among us, and have many deep links with other important lines of current physics research.
