The recently modified Ontario Phosphorus index (PLATO) is one P loss risk assessment tool to identify the areas vulnerable to P loss. Applicability and accuracy of PLATO is being tested in this study at two sites in Southwestern Ontario at field/intra-field scales. The main objective of this study is to identify the critical source areas to P loss within the Gully Creek watershed using this modified P index. Other P loss risk assessment tools (NCPLAT, APLE) are compared to enhance the results certainty at watershed level. The study also evaluates the spatial distribution of P loss risk within a field in the Bayfield river basin. The results indicate that at both field and sub-field scales the dominant P loss process in the rolling topography studied is particulate P through soil erosion loss.

Book excerpt: Elevated phosphorus (P) loading of freshwater lakes and reservoirs often results in poor water quality and negative ecological effects. Critical source areas (CSA) of P in the watershed can be difficult to identify and control. A useful concept for identification of a CSA is the P risk index (P Index) that evaluates the P risk associated with distinct source and transport pathways. The objectives of this study were to create a GIS model that adapts the Minnesota (MN) P Index for use at the watershed scale in a mixed-use, mountain environment, and to evaluate its effectiveness relative to field-based assessment. A GIS-based model of the MN P Index, adapted for montane environments and relying primarily on publicly available geospatial data, was created and applied in the Wallsburg watershed, located in the mountains of Central Utah. One necessary data input, P found in plant residue of common Utah ecosystems, was found lacking after literature review. We experimentally determined a range of observed values from multiple ecosystems to adapt and validate the GIS model. The GIS P Index was evaluated against the results of 58 field scale applications of the MN P Index conducted throughout the watershed. The field-scale analysis resulted in about 14% of the sites sampled being identified as high or very high risk for P transport to surface water. Spatially, these high risk areas were determined to be a geographic cluster of fields near the lower middle agricultural section of the watershed. The GIS model visually and spatially identified the same cluster of fields as high risk areas. Various soil test P scenarios were explored and compared to the known 58 site values. Soil test phosphorus had little effect on the GIS model’s ability to accurately predict P risk in this watershed suggesting that high volume soil sampling is not always necessary to identify CSAs of P. Variable hypothetical livestock density scenarios were also simulated. The GIS model proved sensitive to variable P inputs and highlighted the necessity of accurate applied P source data. On average the model under-predicted the known field-site values by a risk score of 1.3, which suggests reasonable success in P assessment based on the categorical risk scores of the MN P Index and some potential for improvement. The GIS model has great potential to give land managers the ability to quickly locate potential CSAs and prioritizing remediation efforts to sites with greatest risk.

Book excerpt: Nonpoint source pollution by phosphorus and sediment is a wide-spread problem across the United States and specifically in Vermont and the Lake Champlain Basin. Best management of nonpoint source loading will likely involve a combination of land use and stream channel modifications, but few studies have comprehensively examined the relative importance of land use, streambank instability, and soil phosphorus. Thus, it is important to understand the associations between these characteristics, as well as their overall, relationship to watershed nutrient loading dynamics. The main objectives of this study were (1) to examine the impacts of land use at the watershed and near-stream scales on total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), (2) to explore the links between geomorphic condition and phosphorus and sediment concentrations and loads throughout the watershed and at different spatial scales, and (3) to investigate the importance of soil phosphorus concentrations in stream banks in contributing to the overall phosphorus load. TP, SRP, and TSS samples were collected from eight sites located at tributary junctures and one site at the mouth of Hungerford Brook, a 50 km2 watershed in the Lake Champlain Basin, under storm and baseflow conditions. Rapid geomorphic assessment (RGA) scores, land use, and soil phosphorus concentrations were collected for reaches upstream of sampling locations. Both nested and unnested design multivariate modeling was used to evaluate the importance of characteristics in the individual subwatersheds (unnested) or the entire upstream watershed (nested). SRP, TP, and TSS were predicted as both concentrations and instantaneous loads, using raw quantifications of subwatershed characteristics as well as these same characteristics standardized by the area of agriculture in the subwatershed. Correlation coefficients and principal components analysis were used to select variables that were used in Akaike information criterion (AIC) model selection and stepwise regression. Unnested variables used were agriculture, agriculture in a streamside buffer, proportion of corn, slope, channel degradation, and soil phosphorus. For the nested design, agriculture, agriculture in the buffer, channel aggradation, RGA score, and soil phosphorus concentrations were used. Best fit models were selected based on AICc scores and overall model R2. n ANOVA was also performed on the percent difference between storm flow concentrations and average baseflow concentrations. Results indicate that phosphorus and sediment transport occurs mainly during storm events and concentrations greatly exceed state water quality standards. Concentrations of SRP and TP were significantly lower at the mouth of Hungerford Brook than in upstream subwatersheds, indicating that deposition and storage are occurring in this downstream part of the watershed. SRP concentrations appear to be best explained by agriculture in the riparian buffer, while TP and TSS are influenced by agricultural land use at multiple spatial scales. Agricultural land use was associated with increased stream instability. These findings suggest that additional phosphorus and sediment management, targeted at increasing stream stability and reducing impacts from agriculture, are needed in order to reduce the overall load traveling to Lake Champlain.

North Carolina developed the Phosphorus Loss Assessment Tool (PLAT) to evaluate the potential P loss from agricultural fields to waterbodies via four components. Our overall goal was to evaluate the potential of using spatial data to estimate P loss without physically visiting fields since many PLAT required parameters occur in spatial formats. The objective of the first study was to assess the possibility of spatial implementation of PLAT and to compare the effect of scale on the PLAT numerical results and the associated categorical rankings. Since an important input parameter, the average annual soil loss determined by the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation, is not directly available from field measurement, our objective in the second study was to assess the potential of obtaining RUSLE estimates, specifically the topography factor LS, through Digital Elevation Model data in a Geographic Information System environment. In the first study, two methods of whole field average (WFA) and grid average (GA) were used to compare the difference in modeling P loss at different scales. The same list of PLAT required parameters were prepared from soil test reports and spatial database at the coarse scale of whole agriculture field and the fine scale of 0.4-ha grid. Soil tolerance value was used to temporarily replace the soil loss data. In the second study, a widely used Arc Macro Language (AML) program for estimating RUSLE topographic factor LS was evaluated through two approaches of whole field (WF) and representative profile (RP) analysis on a North Carolina landscape. Watershed delineation technique was adopted to select the representative profiles based on the references of slope distributions and field subdivisions from NRCS water quality specialists. Results from the first study indicated that soluble and particulate P loss, which occupied 59.3% and 26.3% of the total P.
