Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating work is divided into two main sections. Part I reviews the basic principles of water movement in channels and the mass balance approach common to most models. It also covers the practical usefulness, model peer review, and guidance on model selection and calibration. Part II discusses flow simulation and prediction of time of travel, dye tracing and mixing, heat balance and temperature modeling, and reaeration and volatilization. This interesting, easy-to-read volume includes comprehensive reviews for the use of fluorescent water tracing dyes, longitudinal dispersion, evaporation and wind speed functions, prediction of saturation concentrations of dissolved oxygen, and reaeration coefficients. This book furnishes the reader with appendices which provide a synopsis of available computer models and gives a comprehensive listing of methods used to measure flow rates in rivers, tributaries, and pipes and channels introducing wastewaters into streams. This volume is a valuable, indispensable reference for all researchers, instructors, students in advanced environmental modeling courses, and practicing engineers.

Book excerpt: This latest volume in the critically acclaimed and highly influential Attention and Performance series focuses on two of the fastest moving research areas in cognitive and affective neuroscience - decision making and emotional processing. Decision Making, Affect, and Learning investigates the psychological and neural systems underlying decision making, and the relationship with reward, affect, and learning. In addition, it considers neurodevelopmental and clinical aspects of these issues - for example the role of decision making and reward in drug addiction. It also looks at the applied aspects of this knowledge to other disciplines, including the growing field of Neuroeconomics. After an introductory chapter from the Volume editors, the book is then arranged according to the following themes: Psychological Processes underlying decision-making. Neural systems of decision-making Neural systems of emotion, reward and learning Neurodevelopmental and clinical aspects Superbly written and edited, the book highlights the complex interplay between emotional and decision-making processes and their relationship with learning.

Book excerpt: The research work contained in this report concerns the transport of total phosphorus and orthophosphorus to Lake Erie. The various calculational techniques for analyzing data obtained from Lake Erie tributaries are presented. These calculations were developed to determine the source of the phosphorus and to quantify the input to the lake. The source and quantity of phosphorus devised for Lake Erie. The first section of this report presents the basic concepts, mass balances (that applied to the water and that applied to the phosphorus), and force relationships. The second section of this report concerns the quantification of total phosphorus input to Lake Erie river basins and shortline sources. A computational method called the Flow Interval Method was devised to permit the calculaion of total phosphorus influx without measuring the total phosphorus concentration for the entire year. Another important aspect of reducing total phosphorus influx from river basins is the understanding of the transport processes in rivers. The third section of this report concerns the transport of total phosphorus during storm events. The fourth section of this report presents the derivation of the necessary equations used to calculate the distance of the travel density function form measurements of the water flow rate and the total phosphorus concentrations at a point in the stream.
