Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Computer Science - Software, , course: Image Processing, language: English, abstract: In this thesis various methods for lossless compression of source image data are analyzed and discussed. The main focus in this work is lossless compression algorithms based on context modeling using tree structure. We are going to compare CALIC, GCT-I algorithms to the JPEG2000 standard algorithm which will be considered the reference of comparison. This work includes research on how to modify CALIC algorithm in continuous-tone mode by truncating tails of the error histogram which may lead to improve CALIC compression performance. Also, we are going to propose a modification to CALIC in binary mode by eliminating error feedback mechanism. As when any pixel to be encoded has a different grey level than any of the neighboring pixels, CALIC triggers an escape sequence that switches the algorithm from binary mode to continuous-tone mode. Which means in this case the pixel will be treated as if it was in continuous-tone region. This minor modification should improve CALIC performance in binary images. Finally, we are going to discuss the GCT-I on medical images and compare results to the JPEG2000 standard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it's true that image compression research is a mature field, continued improvements in computing power and image representation tools keep the field spry. Faster processors enable previously intractable compression algorithms and schemes, and certainly the demand for highly portable high-quality images will not abate. Document and Image Compression highlights the current state of the field along with the most probable and promising future research directions for image coding. Organized into three broad sections, the book examines the currently available techniques, future directions, and techniques for specific classes of images. It begins with an introduction to multiresolution image representation, advanced coding and modeling techniques, and the basics of perceptual image coding. This leads to discussions of the JPEG 2000 and JPEG-LS standards, lossless coding, and fractal image compression. New directions are highlighted that involve image coding and representation paradigms beyond the wavelet-based framework, the use of redundant dictionaries, the distributed source coding paradigm, and novel data-hiding techniques. The book concludes with techniques developed for classes of images where the general-purpose algorithms fail, such as for binary images and shapes, compound documents, remote sensing images, medical images, and VLSI layout image data. Contributed by international experts, Document and Image Compression gathers the latest and most important developments in image coding into a single, convenient, and authoritative source.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, image and signal compression for storage and transmission purpose has seen a great expansion. But what about medical data compression? Should a medical image or a physiological signal be processed and compressed like any other data? The progress made in imaging systems, storing systems and telemedicine makes compression in this field particularly interesting. However, this compression has to be adapted to the specificities of biomedical data which contain diagnosis information. As such, this book offers an overview of compression techniques applied to medical data, including: physiological signals, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound images, static and dynamic volumetric images. Researchers, clinicians, engineers and professionals in this area, along with postgraduate students in the signal and image processing field, will find this book to be of great interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report, commonly used lossless and lossy image compression algorithms are heuristically presented and then compared in terms of performance. The lossy algorithms, JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) and Fractal compression, are compared in terms of their respective sensitivities between compression ratio and image fidelity. Compression algorithms based on the lossless models of Huffman, Adaptive Huffman, and Arithmetic coding are compared in terms of compression ratio and compression/decompression time requirements. High fidelity image reconstructions of JPEG and Fractal compressions are also included in the comparison. Results, for the images tested, indicate that if imperceptible losses in fidelity can be tolerated, then among the current versions of the algorithms tested, the JPEG results in higher compression with less process time.

Book excerpt: During this six month period our works concentrated on three, somewhat different areas. We looked at and developed a number of error concealment schemes for use in a variety of video coding environments. This work is described in an accompanying (draft) Masters thesis. In the thesis we describe application of this techniques to the MPEG video coding scheme. We felt that the unique frame ordering approach used in the MPEG scheme would be a challenge to any error concealment/error recovery technique. We continued with our work in the vector quantization area. We have also developed a new type of vector quantizer, which we call a scan predictive vector quantization. The scan predictive VQ was tested on data processed at Goddard to approximate Landsat 7 HRMSI resolution and compared favorably with existing VQ techniques. A paper describing this work is included. The third area is concerned more with reconstruction than compression. While there is a variety of efficient lossless image compression schemes, they all have a common property that they use past data to encode future data. This is done either via taking differences, context modeling, or by building dictionaries. When encoding large images, this common property becomes a common flaw. When the user wishes to decode just a portion of the image, the requirement that the past history be available forces the decoding of a significantly larger portion of the image than desired by the user. Even with intelligent partitioning of the image dataset, the number of pixels decoded may be four times the number of pixels requested. We have developed an adaptive scanning strategy which can be used with any lossless compression scheme and which lowers the additional number of pixels to be decoded to about 7 percent of the number of pixels requested! A paper describing these results is included. Sayood, Khalid and Nori, Sekhar and Araj, A. Unspecified Center DECODING; IMAGE PROCESSING; IMAGE RECONSTRUCTION; SIGNAL ENCODING; VECTO...

Book excerpt: Advances in signal and image processing together with increasing computing power are bringing mobile technology closer to applications in a variety of domains like automotive, health, telecommunication, multimedia, entertainment and many others. The development of these leading applications, involving a large diversity of algorithms (e.g. signal, image, video, 3D, communication, cryptography) is classically divided into three consecutive steps: a theoretical study of the algorithms, a study of the target architecture, and finally the implementation. Such a linear design flow is reaching its limits due to intense pressure on design cycle and strict performance constraints. The approach, called Algorithm-Architecture Matching, aims to leverage design flows with a simultaneous study of both algorithmic and architectural issues, taking into account multiple design constraints, as well as algorithm and architecture optimizations, that couldn’t be achieved otherwise if considered separately. Introducing new design methodologies is mandatory when facing the new emerging applications as for example advanced mobile communication or graphics using sub-micron manufacturing technologies or 3D-Integrated Circuits. This diversity forms a driving force for the future evolutions of embedded system designs methodologies. The main expectations from system designers’ point of view are related to methods, tools and architectures supporting application complexity and design cycle reduction. Advanced optimizations are essential to meet design constraints and to enable a wide acceptance of these new technologies. Algorithm-Architecture Matching for Signal and Image Processing presents a collection of selected contributions from both industry and academia, addressing different aspects of Algorithm-Architecture Matching approach ranging from sensors to architectures design. The scope of this book reflects the diversity of potential algorithms, including signal, communication, image, video, 3D-Graphics implemented onto various architectures from FPGA to multiprocessor systems. Several synthesis and resource management techniques leveraging design optimizations are also described and applied to numerous algorithms. Algorithm-Architecture Matching for Signal and Image Processing should be on each designer’s and EDA tool developer’s shelf, as well as on those with an interest in digital system design optimizations dealing with advanced algorithms.
