Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 50 years, crash studies involving human subjects have improved understanding of occupant and vehicle kinematics, helped explain injury mechanisms in lower speed collisions, and led to improved seat and vehicle design. Human Subject Crash Testing: Innovations and Advances includes 42 of the most important historical and current studies which used living human subjects in frontal, side, and rear-end impacts. Covering more than 50 years of research (from 1955 through 2006), the book includes numerous landmark SAE papers, as well as papers from other conference proceedings. Papers were chosen based on criteria that included quality and rigor of methods, uniqueness, number of subjects, and long-term reference value. This book also features a comprehensive bibliography, which contains brief summaries of other relevant human subject crash test studies that are not included in the book.

Book excerpt: This book provides a state-of-the-art look at the applied biomechanics of accidental injury and prevention. The editors, Drs. Narayan Yoganandan, Alan M. Nahum and John W. Melvin are recognized international leaders and researchers in injury biomechanics, prevention and trauma medicine. They have assembled renowned researchers as authors for 29 chapters to cover individual aspects of human injury assessment and prevention. This third edition is thoroughly revised and expanded with new chapters in different fields. Topics covered address automotive, aviation, military and other environments. Field data collection; injury coding/scaling; injury epidemiology; mechanisms of injury; human tolerance to injury; simulations using experimental, complex computational models (finite element modeling) and statistical processes; anthropomorphic test device design, development and validation for crashworthiness applications in topics cited above; and current regulations are covered. Risk functions and injury criteria for various body regions are included. Adult and pediatric populations are addressed. The exhaustive list of references in many areas along with the latest developments is valuable to all those involved or intend to pursue this important topic on human injury biomechanics and prevention. The expanded edition will interest a variety of scholars and professionals including physicians, biomedical researchers in many disciplines, basic scientists, attorneys and jurists involved in accidental injury cases and governmental bodies. It is hoped that this book will foster multidisciplinary collaborations by medical and engineering researchers and academicians and practicing physicians for injury assessment and prevention and stimulate more applied research, education and training in the field of accidental-injury causation and prevention.

Book excerpt: These proceedings include the Technical Evaluation Report, a tribute to Dr. Henning E. von Gierke, Director Emeritus, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), OH, three Keynote Addresses and 32 invited papers of a Specialists' Meeting sponsored by the NATO/RTO Human Factors and Medicine Panel. It was held at WPAFB from 26-28 October 1998. Significant advances have been made in modelling human physical and physiological responses to extreme environments. Technological advances in computer speed and power have made modelling a feasible research and design tool. Computer simulations are being used extensively for predicting human physical and physiological responses, for reducing testing requirements, for rapidly designing improved protective systems, and for performing human safety-systems analyses. A variety of models were reviewed at this Specialists' Meeting including lumped-parameter, rigid-body, finite-element, statistical, physiologic, and empirical models. Topics covered included modelling human-body responses to environmental stressors, and the systems with which the body interacts to: impact, emergency escape, sustained acceleration, vibration, mechanical shock, motion sickness, high altitude, blast, extreme thermal conditions, directed energy and live firing. These proceedings will be of interest to military and civilian scientists and engineers interested in exploiting data bases, tolerance criteria, and new models and methods in the research of physiological systems and in simulating the design, test set up and evaluation of safety systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the second edition of The Whiplash Encyclopedia, Robert Ferrari revisits the notion that whiplash is an example of illness induced by society, in general, and by physicians in particular. The second edition takes the work out of understanding all the different dimensions of whiplash, be it why some people get chronic neck pain and others do not, what causes jaw pain, what therapies work and which do not, how we can understand the effect that psychosocial factors have on recovery, what effect litigation and insurance systems have on recovery, and many other topics. The Whiplash Encyclopedia leaves no topic on whiplash uncovered, and can be used in any medicolegal practice. The next time you have a question about whiplash, the answer is likely to be found in The Whiplash Encyclopedia. The Whiplash Encyclopedia, Second Edition explores new theories being heralded to explain chronic whiplash; discusses Central Sensitization; and includes a new chapter in whiplash mythology. In addition, it expands on the knowledge of what causes (and what does not cause) the many neurological and cognitive symptoms reported by whiplash patients. The second edition also investigates the Whiplash Cultures and countries where chronic whiplash is epidemic and examines those cultures by laying them next to countries that, despite having motor vehicle collisions as frequently as elsewhere in the world, and frequently having physicians diagnose acute whiplash, rarely or uncommonly has anyone taking the stage as chronic whiplash characters.
