Book excerpt: The advent of glyphosate-resistant corn in Missouri has changed traditional reemergence (PRE) followed by postemeregence (POST) herbicide programs to ones that predominately utilize glyphosate POST. POST only programs can allow early season weed competition. The objective was to determine the efficacy of one and two-pass programs using PRE and POST herbicides in glyphosate-resistant corn and to quantitate the nitrogen loss from various application timings in POST glyphosate weed control. The first study composed of one-pass and two-pass herbicide weed control programs. Weed control failures occurred 29% more often using one-pass systems compared to two-pass programs utilizing PREs and yield reductions occurred more often in one-pass systems. Overall, two-pass systems which included the use of a PRE herbicide resulted in more consistent weed control across all species than one-pass POST treatments. The second study consisted of PRE herbicide treatments to favor grass, broadleaf, or mixed weed populations at multiple glyphosate application timings. To document nitrogen loss, weed biomass, leaf chlorophyll meter readings, and stalk nitrate testing was measured. Grass weeds were more detrimental to yield than broadleaf weeds. Chlorophyll meter readings documented nitrogen deficiency between treatments. Corn leaf chlorophyll meter readings taken at tasseling correlated strongly to the resultant grain yield (R2 [greater than or equal to] .84). Higher year-end stalk nitrate accumulations were reflective of higher grain yield.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton and soybean resistant to glyphosate are widely planted in the United States. Ninety-five percent of the cotton and 85% of the soybean in North Carolina is glyphosate-resistant (GR). Rapid adoption of the technology is attributed to broad spectrum weed control, convenience of glyphosate-based weed management systems, and greater rotational crop flexibility. Corn resistant to glyphosate is less widely grown, but plantings are expected to increase. Wide-spread planting of GR crops in the United States and glyphosate patent expiration has led to a proliferation of glyphosate products. Growers have questioned their advisors on efficacy and crop tolerance of many of these products. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate 10 glyphosate products, representing isopropylamine, diammonium, and potassium salts, applied postemergence (POST) and postemergence-directed (PDIR) at 630 and 1680 g ae/ha for GR corn and GR cotton tolerance and weed control. There were no differences among products for control of six annual grass and 10 annual broadleaf weed species. No injury to corn from any glyphosate product at 630 or 1680 g/ha or to cotton from 630 g/ha was noted at any of seven locations. ClearOut 41 Plus"! an isopropylamine salt of glyphosate, and Roundup WEATHERMAX"! a potassium salt of glyphosate, applied POST at 1680 g/ha injured cotton 27 to 30% and 10 to 17%, respectively, at 3 of 7 locations. No cotton injury was noted with Glyfos®, Glyfos® X-TRA, Glyphomax"! Gly Star"!Original, Roundup Original"! Roundup UltraMAX®, Touchdown®, or Touchdown Total"! No differences were noted among glyphosate products or between rates for corn or cotton yield or cotton fiber properties. Field studies were conducted at six sites during 2002 and 2003 to evaluate weed control and glyphosate-resistant corn response to glyphosate and nicosulfuron plus atrazine applied POST as affected by PRE herbicide and timing of POST herbicide.

Book excerpt: Glyphosate, known by many trade names, including Roundup, is a highly effective herbicide. Widespread glyphosate use for corn and soybean has led to glyphosate resistance, which is now documented in 14 weed species affecting U.S. cropland, and recent surveys suggest that acreage with glyphosate-resistant (GR) weeds is expanding. Data from USDA's Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS), along with the Benchmark Study (conducted independently by plant scientists), are used to address several issues raised by the spread of GR weeds. Choices made by growers that could help manage glyphosate resistance include using glyphosate during fewer years, combining it with one or more alternative herbicides, and, most importantly, not applying glyphosate during consecutive growing seasons. As a result, managing glyphosate resistance is more cost effective than ignoring it, and after about 2 years, the cumulative impact of the returns received is higher when managing instead of ignoring resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovative Strategies for Managing Weeds in an Environmentally Protective Manner Successfully meeting the challenge of providing weed control without relying on dangerous chemicals that endanger the ecosystem or human lives, this compendium focuses on management strategies that reduce herbicidal usage, restore ecological balance, and increase food production. It also provides new insights and approaches for weed scientists, agronomists, agriculturists, horticulturists, farmers, and extentionists, as well as teachers and students. In the Handbook of Sustainable Weed Management, experts from Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia organize in one resource information related to weeds and their management from different ecosystems around the world that has been until now been scattered throughout the literature.. The text captures the multifaceted impacts of and approaches to managing weeds from field, farm, landscape, regional, and global perspectives. Generously illustrated with tables and figures, this book not only describes the various techniques for weed management but shows you what methods work best in a given region, or in response to a specific, invasive weed or invaded crop. Covering the full scope of modern weed science the handbook examines different aspects of weed management, including— • Cultural practices • Cover crops • Crop rotation designs • Potential of herbicide resistant crops • Bioherbicides • Allelopathy • Microorganisms • Integrated weed management In spite of advancement in technologies and procedures, weeds continue to pose a major ecological and economical threat to agriculture. Handbook of Sustainable Weed Management takes a broad view of weeds as a part of an agricultural system composed of interacting production, environmental, biological, economic, and social components all working together to find balance. This comprehensive book is a vital addition to the debate over how global weed management is changing in the 21st century. Also available in soft cover

Book excerpt: Field studies were conducted from 2000 to 2002 to evaluate crop tolerance, weed control, grain yield, and net returns in glyphosate-resistant corn with various herbicide systems. Weed management systems evaluated various preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) herbicide options. Glyphosate formulations did not influence crop injury, weed control, or grain yield in either study. Effective annual grass control was not achieved with any PRE herbicide system. However, PRE herbicide treatment plus any glyphosate treatment controlled goosegrass, large crabgrass, and Texas panicum> 86%. Regardless of PRE herbicide options, any POST glyphosate treatment controlled common ragweed and common lambsquarters at least 88 and 89%, respectively. Ipomoea spp. were controlled at least 88% with a PRE herbicide fb glyphosate EPOST alone, glyphosate sequentially, or in EPOST mixture with either halosulfuron or mesotrione. The highest yielding herbicide systems used glyphosate applied once or twice. Net returns were highest for glyphosate weed management systems. Experiments conducted in the North Carolina State University Phytotron greenhouse and three field locations in 2002 determined the effect of 1.12 kg ai/ha of glyphosate at various application timings on pollen viability and seed set in two types (GA21 and NK603) of glyphosate-resistant corn. Regardless of hybrid, pollen viability was reduced in phytotron and field studies with glyphosate treatments applied POST at the V6 stage or later. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy indicated distinct morphological alterations and large vacuoles and lower starch accumulation associated with later glyphosate treatments that caused pollen viability reductions. Although glyphosate negatively influenced pollen viability, pollination and seed set were not influenced. Enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay examined CP4-EPSPS expression in DKC 64-10 (NK603) at anthesis and showed the greatest amount in pollen with progressively less i.
