Book excerpt: From January 1994 to March 1996, a comparative study was conducted to determine whether group housing of dry sows can be advised as an alternative for individual housing. In the study three group housing systems (free access stalls, trickle feeding and the electronic sow feeding) and one individual housing system (stalls) were considered. The four systems were compared on different aspects: i.e. animal behaviour, reproduction and replacement, health, feeding, labour and control, and economics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last book on the lactating sow was published over 15 years ago. This new book brings us up to date in current knowledge on the gestating and lactating sow. It covers new and important topics such as conditioning of gilts for optimal reproductive performance, feeding high fibre diets to gestating sows and providing various fat sources in gestation and lactation. It also describes the several key success factors to group-housing systems in gestation, which is a must due to the current move towards group-housing. The new concept of transition feeding for sows is discussed, as well as the factors involved in mammary development of gilts and sows, both of which are instrumental for maximum colostrum and/or milk yields. The impact of the human-animal interactions on sow welfare and performance is discussed with focus on new handling practices that could be developed to overbalance the negative interactions inherent to pig management systems. Updates on must-have topics, such as amino acid and energy requirements of sows, colostrum and milk yield and composition, and sow health are also provided. The subjects covered in this book will assist animal scientists, nutritionists, veterinarians and swine producers in learning the most recent information on relevant and current topics affecting sow production, and in knowing which areas are in need of further research efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domestic pig is perceived as an animal with intelligence and character and yet, in the industrialized world, the majority of people have had little or no contact with them. Pigs are subject to a wide range of environments from the tropics to the sub-arctic, ranging from small-scale, extensive systems to large-scale intensive systems. They may spend their whole life on one farm or may be subject to long-distance transport multiple times. Not surprisingly, many aspects of their life experiences can impact their welfare. This book brings together a team of leading pig welfare research scientists to review the natural history of the pig, the welfare of pigs at different stages of life and to indicate what the future holds in terms of pig welfare. The text is aimed at researchers and teachers working in veterinary and animal science together with those working in the pig industry and for governmental and non-governmental animal welfare organizations.

The book covers both recent developments and reviews of historical welfare issues, with 12 new chapters addressing the most relevant and significant issues from a global perspective. Sections review the needs of pigs, including chapters on the physical environment and the social and emotional needs of the animals, key welfare issues in the pig's lifecycle from birth to slaughter, including weaning, aggression and pig-human interactions, and emerging topics such as prenatal stress, individual differences and organic farming. Final sections cover pig welfare and attitudes towards pig welfare amongst farmers and other stakeholders. Written by an international team of leaders in the field, the book continues to be a useful resource for practicing vets involved in welfare assessment, welfare research scientists and students, and indeed anyone with a professional interest in the welfare of pigs.

Book excerpt: The effects of gestation housing system on sow and litter performance over 2.5 yr were evaluated in southwestern Iowa. Gestation housing system treatments were 1) individual gestation stalls in a mechanically ventilated, partially slatted floor, manure flush confinement building (CONF); and 2) group pens with individual feed stalls in deep-bedded, naturally ventilated hoop barns (HOOP). In all, 957 litters from 353 sows were analyzed using mixed models. Cull events (120) that occurred during the study were analyzed for correlations between housing treatment and reason for culling. Number born alive per litter differed for the two housing treatments (P = 0.002) with HOOP resulting in 0.7 more pigs born per litter. Pre-wean mortality was not different (P = 0.7) for the two housing treatments. Cross fostering occurred to equalize litter size within 24 h of birth. This ultimately resulted in an equal (P = 0.5) number of weaned pigs/ sow occurring regardless of gestation housing treatment. Wean-to-breed interval was different (P = 0.01) with CONF sows returning to estrus 1.7 d faster than HOOP sows. Failure to conceive was the leading reason for culling in both treatments. There was a trend for sows gestated in CONF to be culled more often for feet and leg unsoundness. HOOP sows tended to be culled more often for poor body condition. Results indicate that gestating sows can be housed in deep-bedded hoop barns equipped with individual feeding stalls and achieve production comparable or superior to gestating sows housed in individual stall gestation systems. Construction and operating costs for the two gestation housing systems were also compared. Fixed costs are less for hoop barns equipped with individual feeding stalls compared to mechanically ventilated confinement systems with individual gestation stalls. Assuming equal prolificacy, feed cost per weaned pig is 7% more, but total cost per weaned pig is 3% less for pigs produced by sows gestated in hoop barns compared to pigs from individual stall gestation systems. When the reported increase in live pigs born for litters following hoop gestation was included in the cost analysis, the group housing in hoop barns for gestation resulted in a weaned pig cost that was 11% less than the cost of a weaned pig from the individual stall confinement system. In the upper Midwest United States, group housing of gestation sows in deep-bedded hoop barns may produce pigs at a lower cost than individual gestation stalls in confinement facilities.

Book excerpt: Abnormal behaviour patterns, from the jumping and somersaulting of caged laboratory mice to the pacing of enclosed 'big cats', are displayed by many millions of farm, zoo, research and companion animals. Including new chapters and over 30 contributors, this book focuses on the causation and treatment of these environment-induced stereotypic behaviours, and their implications for animal welfare and normalcy of brain functioning. The book begins by taking an ethological perspective, focusing on the constraints captivity places on animals' normal behavioural repertoires, and the effects these have on specific motivational systems. It then addresses the role of dysfunction, particularly the impact of chronic stress and impoverished environments on brain functioning. The book then moves on to explore how stereotypic behaviours can be tackled, once they have emerged, using diverse techniques from environmental enrichment to pharmaceutical intervention. It concludes by giving a new definition for 'stereotypic behaviour', and a discussion of future research directions.
