Book excerpt: "This study considers the effect of the choice of reference frame, Lagrangian or Eulerian, on numerical models for regional ice forecasting. Four models were selected for this analysis. These are RIM/EHB, the Hibler finite difference model, EIS, an Eulerian finite element model, EMC, an Eulerian finite element model with a Lagrangian thickness distribution and LMC, a fully Lagrangian finite element model. Two major components of these models are identified, the momentum balance and the thickness distribution. The choice of reference frame for each of these was considered. This was accomplished by a series of generic scenarios, including a thick ice feature in a region of thinner ice, a discontinuity from thick to thin ice and flow past an island. For the thickness distribution, the choice of an Eulerian or Lagrangian reference system is critical, while for momentum it is not significant. In some cases, differences due to the constitutive law and numerical solution techniques overshadowed the influence of the reference frame. A Beaufort Sea scenario was simulated, showing how the various models handle land boundaries and the multi-year pack. Book excerpt: "This report summarizes the results of a numerical ice modelling study for the southern Beaufort Sea during February and March 1983. Though a major goal was to assess differences in the results derived from Eulerian and Lagrangian treatments of the ice velocity field, data analysis procedures and model calibration are also discussed. A statistical spatial estimation technique was employed to interpolate winds to a regular grid. Ice motion and ice cover characteristics were extracted from SLAR imagery. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to test the effect of ice thickness and ridging constants on ice strength, as calculated using a multicategory thickness distribution. This assisted in the model calibration that followed, which included the consideration of ice strength and the constitutive law. To assess the quality of ice hindcasts, a performance measure was used which compared observed and calculated ice motion fields. Adequate calibration proved difficult with such a complex model, though it was still possible to compare Eulerian and Lagrangian approaches. There is little justification for choosing one approach over the other in terms of reliability of ice motion forecasts, however differences in resulting ice fields and run costs were significant. The current generation of forced or fully coupled models, however, have difficulty predicting SIE anomalies from the long-term trend, highlighting the need to better identify the mechanisms involved in the seasonal evolution of sea ice cover. One such mechanism is Coastal Divergence (CD), a proxy for ice thickness anomalies based on late winter ice motion, quantified using Lagrangian ice tracking. CD gains predictive skill through the positive feedback of surface albedo anomalies, mirrored in Reflected Solar Radiation (RSR), during melt season. Exploring the dynamic and thermodynamic contributions to minimum SIE predictability, RSR, SIE and CD are compared as predictors using a regional seasonal sea ice forecast model for July 1, June 1 and May 1 forecast dates for all Arctic peripheral seas. The predictive skill of June RSR anomalies mainly originates from open water fraction at the surface, i.e. June SIE and June RSR have equal predictive skill for most seas. The finding is supported by the surprising positive correlation found between June Melt Pond Fraction (MPF) and June RSR in all peripheral seas: MPF anomalies indicate presence of ice or open water that is key to creating minimum SIE anomalies. This contradicts models that show correlation between melt onset, MPF and the minimum SIE. A hindcast model shows that for a May 1 forecast, CD anomalies have better predictive skill than RSR anomalies for most peripheral seas"--

Because of the unique, highly nonlinear nature of sea-ice interaction, special attention is given to the ramifications of ice interaction on sea ice motion and deformation. These ramifications are illustrated both by analytic solution and by numerical model results. In addition, the role of ice dynamics in the atmosphere-ice-ocean system is discussed in light of numerical modeling experiments, including a fully coupled ice-ocean model of the Arctic-Greenland-Norwegian seas.

Book excerpt: Applied research conducted from 1984 to 1990 on behalf of the Environmental Studies Research Funds (ESRF) and Ice Centre Environment Canada (ICEC) has resulted in the implementation of an operational Long Range Ice (sea ice and iceberg severity) Forecasting System (LRIFS) at Ice Centre, Ottawa. The LRIFS system employs statistical models based on Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analyses of up to 40 years of regional surface and upper air weather data to predict abundance of sea ice and icebergs, in some locations up to six months prior to occurence. The system also makes provision of the use of ice anomaly data to predict future ice conditions. In the present work, this system has been generalized from its previous east coast base, and is now configured for use anywhere in the northern hemisphere. Major enhancements has been introduced to automate the identification of potentially viable meteorological predictors, and tests have been added to eliminate predictors showing artificial skill.

Book excerpt: "The objective of this study is to develop a regional scale sea ice dynamics model for obtaining short range, real time or near-real time predictions of ice conditions for operational use. Hibler's ... dynamic - thermodynamic formulation is modified to suit this objective. The regional-scale model consists of (1) a momentum equation which includes air to ice stress, water to ice stress, Coriolis force, ocean tilt and internal ice resistance, (2) a constitutive law which relates the ice stress to the strain rate and the ice strength and (3) continuity equations for ice thickness and concentration. The continuity equations consider a simple ice thickness distribution which is the same as the one used in Hibler's ... model. An improved thermodynamic formulation for use in the ice thickness distribution is being developed and will be incorporated later into this model. A plastic viscous rheology is used for modelling the ice-ice interaction. Other stresses are parameterized using standard methods. A finite difference numerical procedure is used for solving the equations. The regional ice model is run on a 22 x 22 array with a grid size of 42.3 km and a time step of 3 hours. Model integrations out to 48 hours have been performed and the simulations are compared with data collected during the November/December 1979 Winter Ice Experiment in the Beaufort Sea .... The drift comparisons show the simulated velocities and observed drift to be in reasonable agreement especially considering that errors due to poorly resolved wind and water currents can be substantial.
