Book excerpt: Quantifying the emissions due to the charging of the batteries of the plug-in hybrid electricity school bus operated by the Austin Independent School District (AISD) is the focus of this work. This plug-in hybrid school bus is one of only nineteen in the country, and was manufactured by IC Corporation. This hybrid school bus reduces fuel consumption and CO2, NOx and PM emissions in comparison with conventional diesel buses. This reduction is good for the health of the children who take the school bus everyday as they are part of the population the most at risk because their lungs are still developing. In order to evaluate CO2, NOx and PM emissions, measurements of the charging of the batteries versus time were taken for the two charging periods each day during the months of April and May 2009. These measurements were repeated in October 2009 when the route was changed for the new school year: 2009-2010. An analysis of the Austin electricity mix that provides electricity to the bus center was done hour by hour to evaluate the emissions, calculated on a g/mile basis. Measurements of the vehicle speed versus time and altitude were taken during February 2010 in order to explain some of the differences observed between the two routes. Different parameters were studied to analyze the results. The first parameter studied was the impact of the season on the emissions. The second parameter studied was the impact of the route and its characteristics (road length, traffic, grade, etc.). The last parameter studied was the difference between two methods used to evaluate the emissions using the electricity mix data. These two methods are different but each of them brings something to the analysis of the results.

This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To conduct testing for vehicle emissions and fuel economy comparisons, regardless of the vehicle sizes, the chassis dynamometer testing method is an almost universal test methodology. However, in the case of heavy-duty vehicles, chassis dynamometer testing is not always a convenient way unlike light-duty vehicles, especially in the aspects of cost and availability. In this study, a new technique is proposed and implemented for a plug-in hybrid school bus and a brand new conventional diesel school bus, for a comparison of emissions and fuel economy. Both buses are owned, and operated by the Department of Transportation of the Austin Independent School District (AISD). One aspect of this new technique is shared with the conventional method for comparing emissions and fuel economy: standard driving cycle development. However, with the new technique, the emissions are measured and the fuel consumption rate is logged (from the on-board computer) simultaneously with the vehicle speed. After the newly established standard driving cycle has been generated, the researcher picks matching micro-trips from all of the logged data. The reconstructed driving cycle for the plug-in hybrid school bus had an overall correlation coefficient of 99.81% relative to the standard driving cycle, and the reconstructed driving cycle for the normal diesel school bus had an overall correlation coefficient of 94.41%. The NOx emissions and fuel injection rate data for these reconstructed driving cycles were then corrected according to EPA and/or SAE standards. The results showed that the plug-in hybrid school bus emits 25% less NOx and has 42% better fuel economy than the normal bus. The fuel economy results obtained from the ~29 minute long Austin school bus standard driving cycle matched the average fuel economy from AISD records within 5.8%, illustrating the accuracy of this new technique. The overall energy costs for operation of these buses were also analyzed, and the plug-in hybrid school bus (accounting for the cost of the electricity used to recharge the batteries twice each workday) showed benefits unless the diesel fuel price, which is tax-free for public school districts in Texas, is lower than $1.15/gallon. If the diesel fuel price is to increase continuously in the future, the plug-in hybrid school bus will become a more attractive option as a substitute for conventional diesel school buses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental policy aims at the transition to sustainable production and consumption. This is taking place in different ways and at different levels. In cases where businesses are continuously active to improve the environmental performance of their products and activities, the availability of knowledge on environmental impacts is indispensable. The integrated assessment of all environmental impacts from cradle to grave is the basis for many decisions relating to achieving improved products and services. The assessment tool most widely used for this is the environmental Life Cycle Assessment, or LCA. Before you is the new Handbook of LCA replacing the previous edition of 1992. New developments in LCA methodology from all over the world have been discussed and, where possible, included in this new Handbook. Integration of all developments into a new, consistent method has been the main aim for the new Handbook. The thinking on environment and sustainability is, however, quickly evolving so that it is already clear now that this new LCA Handbook does not embrace the very latest developments. Therefore, further revisions will have to take place in the future. A major advantage of this Handbook is that it now also advises which procedures should be followed to achieve adequate, relevant and accepted results. Furthermore, the distinction between detailed and simplified LCA makes this Handbook more broadly applicable, while guidance is provided as to which additional information can be relevant for specialised applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed presentation of the principles and practice of life cycle impact assessment. As a volume of the LCA compendium, the book is structured according to the LCIA framework developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)passing through the phases of definition or selection of impact categories, category indicators and characterisation models (Classification): calculation of category indicator results (Characterisation); calculating the magnitude of category indicator results relative to reference information (Normalisation); and converting indicator results of different impact categories by using numerical factors based on value-choices (Weighting). Chapter one offers a historical overview of the development of life cycle impact assessment and presents the boundary conditions and the general principles and constraints of characterisation modelling in LCA. The second chapter outlines the considerations underlying the selection of impact categories and the classification or assignment of inventory flows into these categories. Chapters three through thirteen exploreall the impact categories that are commonly included in LCIA, discussing the characteristics of each followed by a review of midpoint and endpoint characterisation methods, metrics, uncertainties and new developments, and a discussion of research needs. Chapter-length treatment is accorded to Climate Change; Stratospheric Ozone Depletion; Human Toxicity; Particulate Matter Formation; Photochemical Ozone Formation; Ecotoxicity; Acidification; Eutrophication; Land Use; Water Use; and Abiotic Resource Use. The final two chapters map out the optional LCIA steps of Normalisation and Weighting.
