Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the crisis of leadership in the western democracies, there has been a growth of interest in how leaders outside of the west emerge and consolidate their positions. This book analyses the communication strategies of six charismatic non-western leaders: Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro, Ayatollah Khomeini, Mohammed Mahathir and Lee Kuan Yew. The book addresses the following questions in order to arrive at a better understanding of communication and leadership: How do leaders communicate? Do leaders communicate more by words, or actions? Do leaders have unique communication strategies? Are leaders moral beings, or impostors? The book describes how each of these leaders designed a unique style that integrated verbal and non-verbal modes of communication. It argues that leadership style is performed through the cumulative interaction of non-verbal modes – dress, body language, physical possessions, symbols and symbolic actions – with verbal strategies for communicating visions, values and legitimacy. In order to understand how each of these leaders undertakes a dramatic ‘performance’ of leadership, Jonathan Charteris-Black uses Erving Goffman’s notion of ‘Front’. Noting the inherent similarities between the mutual dependency of actors with audiences and leaders with followers, the book suggests that leaders – like actors – use metaphors and symbols to satisfy followers’ psychological and symbolic needs and that leadership is communicated through impression management, metaphor and media choices. A fascinating and well executed study, this book will interest students and academics working on leadership, applied linguistics, communication studies and politics.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Management Styles, grade: 1,0, AKAD University of Applied Sciences Leipzig, language: English, abstract: Especially in crises, companies need leaders to help them asserting themselves on the markets and getting them through difficult times. However, not every leader always comes to a satisfying result, since there might be a mismatch between the company’s situation and the attitudes and practices of its leader. As a result, the style of leadership plays a decisive role concerning a company’s achievements in the majority of cases. Since the style of leadership might be the critical factor when it comes to the success of a business, scientists have analyzed several leadership styles, which all have different characteristics and therewith also varying effects on the respective companies. Two of the most common styles are the charismatic and the transformational leadership. As their names already indicate, each of these styles has its own characteristic features that affect the surroundings in a variety of ways. But as different as these two leadership styles might seem, they also have similarities based in their principles and attitudes. Since the opinions among scientists partly seem to be divided concerning the resemblance of the two styles on the one hand and the diversity on the other hand, this paper consequently deals with the task to expose the differences and similarities between charismatic and transformational leadership. First, in Chapter 2 Leadership in general a short definition of leadership in general is given, for describing the universal understanding of leadership and its components. For being able to highlight the corresponding differences and similarities between the two special leadership styles that have to be examined, Chapter 3 Charismatic Leadership and Chapter 4 Transformational Leadership analyze the characteristics as well as the components of charismatic and transformational leadership in order to get a better understanding of their basic attributes. The following Chapter 5 Differences between Charismatic and Transformational Leadership shows the main distinctions between these two leadership styles, based on the perceptions of the previous chapters. Chapter 6 Similarities between Charismatic and Transformational Leadership underlines on the other side the general similarities and parallels between the two. Chapter 7 Résumé finally summarizes the results and concludes the paper.

Book excerpt: Most everyone has something they are passionate about. But without the ability to actually effect change... things just stay the same. In order to truly inspire change, we need to be able to effectively explain the problem, inspire people to join us, create a vision for the new reality, and then motivate people to take the actions that lead to the change. Inspiring change requires charisma-the ability to communicate a clear, visionary, and inspirational message that captivates and motivates an audience. Imagine having that kind of aura... where all you had to do was walk into a room and heads would turn and people would want to hear what you have to say. What could that do for your career? Your personal life? The issues and causes you feel most passionately about? But most of us don't have a television show, the aura of celebrity, or the powerful emotional catalyst of a tragedy to unleash our passion. Most of us are just regular, every day people. Can we, too, use the power of charisma to inspire change? The answer is a resounding YES! In this inspiring and idea-packed audio program, The Power of Charisma, you'll learn that charisma is a social skill, like listening, that can be learned. And once learned, it becomes the difference between being heard or ignored. Charisma can benefit virtually every area of your life. Charisma gets people to like you, to trust you, to want to join you. Whether you're the leader of a country, the leader of your Girl Scout troop, or a freelance artist all alone in your studio, charisma can help you get what you want.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership in the Middle East has never been as vital as it is in the wake of the global financial crisis and the Arab Spring Ð yet there is a lack of detailed knowledge concerning strategies for developing capacity in leadership, national skills and knowledge management. This volume aims to address this deficit. This book is the first text on the subject of leadership development in the Middle East to be published in English (drawing on both English and Arabic scholarship) and will contribute to the knowledge and understanding of leadership theory and practice in the global economy. The volume provides in-depth analysis of the social, political and economic factors that shape leadership capacity building efforts and shows how leadership behaviours and practices differ from those in the West, reflecting an ethic of care, social responsibility and concern for developing both organization and individual capabilities as well as fostering community improvement and nation-building and advancing social justice and human well-being. The book reveals the complexity of leadership behaviours in the region and contextualizes analyses with broader contemporary debates including migration, governance, climate change and political leadership succession. The book also includes original insights into the role of women in leadership in business, politics and the community. This unique volume will benefit international organizational behaviour/development specialists, international human resource development practitioners and students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It will be invaluable to development specialists, HR consultants and practitioners on assignment in the Middle East and for policy and capacity development experts in NGOs and international organizations such as the ILO, UN and World Bank.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2018 in the subject Leadership and Human Resource Management - Management Styles, grade: 4.1, University of Kelaniya, language: English, abstract: The objective of the study is to explore the specific charismatic behavioural characteristics in leaders of virtual teams. The charismatic leadership model developed by Conger and Kanungo (1988) is the main theoretical framework for building this research argument. The Sri Lankan BPO sector was selected as the study setting and its virtuality was primarily tested using the virtuality index. The study is a mixed method research study and followed a sequential exploratory mixed method design. The quantitative data was collected by a survey method using C-K scale and qualitative data collection was based on in-depth interviews and focused group discussions based on the questionnaire draws from the C-K scale. Factor analysis was employed to capture the behavioural characteristics of virtual charismatic leaders. Furthermore, the study found that charismatic leadership behaviours were present in the team leaders in BPO companies. The Factor Analysis created a new array of factors to describe the charismatic leadership behaviours in a virtual context. The major contribution emphasized a new set of charismatic leadership behaviours present in leaders of virtual teams. A new model of virtual charismatic leadership was developed including seven behavioural characteristics. By comparing the charismatic behaviours of the Conger and Kanungo model and the proposed model, it was able to discover three behaviours that are unique to the virtual setting, to put forward the originality of the study: They are building trust in followers, the adaptive behaviour, and dealing with diversity. This study added new dimensions to charismatic leadership and can be seen as an extension to the existing model of charismatic leadership of Conger and Kanungo (1998). Next, a detailed behavioural profile of virtual charismatic leaders was developed. In addition, to a concise conceptualization of virtual charismatic leadership it was also given to enrich the literature on leadership. The contribution to the knowledge and the implications were also elaborated, followed by future research directions.

Book excerpt: The past 15 years of leadership research have taught us a valuable lesson: There is more than one way to be a successful leader. The Charismatic, Ideological, and Pragmatic (CIP) approach to leadership showcases three unique yet equally viable pathways to leading and influencing others. This book reviews the history of the CIP model of leadership and summarizes the empirical findings supporting the framework. Emerging areas of leadership research on the CIP model are explored, including: followership, shared leadership, measurement, and gender. Contributions from a range of international academics provide readers with insight into the foundation of the CIP theory of leadership and into where the future of leadership perspectives are headed. It includes a chapter for practitioners seeking to understand the framework through an applied lens and offers evidence for a new scale designed to quantify a leader’s CIP profile. Finally, a revised theoretical framework, incorporating key findings to expand the model to meet the diverse needs of future researchers and leaders is offered. This thought-provoking volume will be essential reading for all scholars, researchers and students interested in the charismatic, ideological, and pragmatic approach to leadership, as well as professionals considering the introduction of a new leadership model.
