Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative View of the Public Finances: From the Beginning to the Close of the Late Administration This Work was published about two years ago, with the View of continuing my account of the finances to the close of the late ad ministration; but being written immediately after the resignation of the minister, it was hardly possible that it should comprehend the whole of his financial Operations, and therefore my chief object in the present edi tion has been, to introduce such further statements as should serve to give a more enlarged View of them, and to shew in its full extent the distress which they have en tailed upon this Country. The immense load Of funded debt which had been left without any adequate provision, has in the course of last year required an addition of more than two millions to the permanent taxes of the kingdom; and the other burdens which have been lately accumulated appear to be so much the consequences of a former expenditure, that the term which has elapsed since the late] Chancellor of the Exchequer retired from power, may in a great measure be considered as forming a part of his ad ministration. Book Synopsis Comparative Public Budgeting by : George M. Guess
Download or read book Comparative Public Budgeting written by George M. Guess and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every government engages in budgeting and public financial management to run the affairs of state. Effective budgeting empowers states to prioritize policies, allocate resources, and discipline bureaucracies, and it contributes to efficacious fiscal and macroeconomic policies. Budgeting can be transparent, participatory, and promote democratic decision-making, or it can be opaque, hierarchical, and encourage authoritarian rule. This book compares budgetary systems around the world by examining the economic, political, cultural, and institutional contexts in which they are formulated, adopted, and executed. The second edition has been updated with new data to offer a more expansive set of national case studies, with examples of budgeting in China, India, Indonesia, Iraq, and Nigeria. Chapters also discuss Brexit and the European Union's struggle to require balances budgets during the Euro Debt Crisis. Additionally, the authors provide a deeper analysis of developments in US budgetary policies from the Revolutionary War through the Trump presidency.

Book Synopsis Public Finance of the Dutch Republic in Comparative Perspective by : Wantje Fritschy
Download or read book Public Finance of the Dutch Republic in Comparative Perspective written by Wantje Fritschy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers the first complete overview of the remarkable public finances of the Dutch Republic of the United Provinces. Wantje Fritschy has analysed the development and structure of its public revenue and expenditure. She argues that a ‘tax revolution’ and the ‘fiscal resilience’ of the provinces together were more important for its surprising performance than Holland’s public debt alone, and the institutional and economic characteristics of its ‘urban system’ were more important than wealth due to foreign trade. Comparisons with the fiscal systems of three more centralized states - the Venetian Republic, Britain and the Ottoman Empire - underline the crucial importance of long-term ‘urbanization trajectories’ in understanding early-modern fiscal performance. It was not because it was federal that the Dutch Republic collapsed.

Book Synopsis Local Public Finance by : René Geissler
Download or read book Local Public Finance written by René Geissler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon a comparative public administration research project, initiated by the Hertie School of Governance (Germany) and the Bertelsmann Foundation (Germany) and supported by a network of researchers from many EU countries. It analyzes both the regimes and the practices of local fiscal regulation in 21 European countries. The book brings together key findings of this research project. The regulatory discussion is not limited to the prominent issue of fiscal rules but focuses on every component of regulation. Beyond this, the book covers affiliated topics such as the impact of regulation for local governments, evolution of regulation, administrative costs and crisis prevention. The various book chapters throughout provide a broad picture of local public finance regulation in theory and in practice, using different theoretical and national lenses for the analysis. Furthermore, the authors investigate the effects of budgetary constraints and higher-level regulatory efforts on local governments and on democracy and public services in every European country. This book fills a gap with respect to the lack of discussion on local government finance from an international, comparative perspective and, in particular, the regulation of local public finance. With its mix of authors, this book will be useful for practitioners as well as for scholars and for theory-driven research.
