Book excerpt: The work described here was carried out as part of an overall assessment of the costs and risks associated with electrical energy production by nuclear and fossil power plants. The results of the overall assessment were reported in WASH-1224, and this appendix provides greater detail on one aspect of the comparisons between nuclear and fossil fuel cycles.

Book excerpt: A component in the America's Energy Future study, Electricity from Renewable Resources examines the technical potential for electric power generation with alternative sources such as wind, solar-photovoltaic, geothermal, solar-thermal, hydroelectric, and other renewable sources. The book focuses on those renewable sources that show the most promise for initial commercial deployment within 10 years and will lead to a substantial impact on the U.S. energy system. A quantitative characterization of technologies, this book lays out expectations of costs, performance, and impacts, as well as barriers and research and development needs. In addition to a principal focus on renewable energy technologies for power generation, the book addresses the challenges of incorporating such technologies into the power grid, as well as potential improvements in the national electricity grid that could enable better and more extensive utilization of wind, solar-thermal, solar photovoltaics, and other renewable technologies.

Book excerpt: Energy and the Environment Cost- Benefit Analysis originates from a conference, the objective of which is to set a global standard to measure the cost and benefit of human’s production of energy. The book focuses on the analysis of the societal and ecological effects of such a production. It also enumerates some existing sources of energy. The book begins with a discussion on the survey of world energy resources. This topic is followed by a discussion on the utilization of fossil- fuel. A separate chapter focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of fusion power. The next section tackles the formation of solar energy systems for the production of electricity. Another section of the book is devoted to the effects of technological change and economic factors on supply and use of energy sources and production. The text can serve as a valuable tool for executives and engineers from the power industry, educators, scientists, environmentalists, students, and researchers in the field of energy creation and conservation.

This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an economic cost-benefit assessment of the penetration of renewable power generation in Cyprus up to 2030. Unlike a purely financial appraisal, we employ a social cost-benefit analysis that is mainly relevant for policy makers, taking into account – apart from direct financial costs – external costs and benefits from the diffusion of renewable electricity. The book presents a comprehensive yet straightforward case study, probably the first one conducted for Cyprus. Electricity produced by renewable sources increased worldwide at its fastest rate to date in 2014. Driven by policies to mitigate climate change, enhance energy security and reduce air pollution, and by declining costs of major technologies, renewables account for almost all net new power generating capacity in the developed world. In this context, Cyprus is increasingly adopting renewable power generation as well. In addition to its energy and environmental commitments as a member of the European Union, the country wishes to diversify its energy supply in order to drive down electricity costs and reduce energy supply risks. A significant deployment of renewable electricity is foreseen in the coming decades. Is it economically justified for a small country with an isolated electric system like Cyprus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public attention has focused in recent years on an array of technological risks to health, safety, and the environment. At the same time, responsibilities for technological risk as sessment, evaluation, and management have grown in both the public and private sectors because of a perceived need to anticipate, prevent, or reduce the risks inherent in modem society. In attempting to meet these responsibilities, legislative, judicial, regulatory, and private sector institutions have had to deal with the extraordinarily complex problems of assessing and balancing risks, costs, and benefits. The need to help society cope with technological risks has given rise to a new intellectual endeavor: the social and behavioral study of issues in risk evaluation and risk management. The scope and complexity of these analyses require a high degree of cooperative effort on the part of specialists from many fields. Analyzing social and behavioral issues requires the efforts of political scientists, sociologists, decision analysts, management scientists, econ omists, psychologists, philosophers, and policy analysts, among others.
