Book Synopsis Where Does the Public Sector End and the Private Sector Begin? by : Ian Lienert
Download or read book Where Does the Public Sector End and the Private Sector Begin? written by Ian Lienert and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real effective exchange rate (REER) is the most commonly used measure for assessing international competitiveness. We develop a methodology to estimate the REER that incorporates two distinctive elements that are not considered in the current literature and apply it to the Mediterranean Quartet (MQ) of Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, whose common pattern of real appreciation has created concern in policy and academic circles. The two elements that we add to the existing literature are (i) product heterogeneity when identifying each country's international competitors and their weights and (ii) a comprehensive treatment of services exports. Our refined measure suggests a modest reduction in the observed REER gap between the MQ countries and the other euro area countries. In particular, considering product heterogeneity and services exports implies a lower real appreciation from 1998 to 2006 on the order of 2-3 percent for all MQ countries. These are difference-in-difference estimates relative to the results obtained for the rest of the euro area countries using the same methodology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s complicated environment, strategic organizational decision-making is a dynamic process marked by a high degree of uncertainty. It is anticipated that the technological potential of artificial intelligence (AI) will provide additional support, but research in this area is still in its early stages. Nonetheless, because the technology is intended to perform functions beyond those of traditional machines, the implications for the division of work and the defining of roles established in the current human–machine relationship are being explored with more awareness. Taking this into consideration ICASDMBW-2022 was flourishingly organized on Dec 16-17, 2022 at Rukmini Devi Institute of Advanced Studies, Delhi. The conference was organized with the purpose to see the applications of AI in the business world and management decision-making. More than 100 participants from around the world participated in the conference and shared their insights, and research ideas relevant to the theme of the conference. We are pleased to inform you that, following careful evaluation, the conference panel has chosen 21 excellent papers from the submissions and assembled them into the proceedings. The following themes are included in the proceedings, although they are not restricted to AI in Human Resources, AI in Finance, AI in Education, AI in Marketing, Statistical analysis, etc. Each manuscript has undergone thorough review and editing in order to ensure that it satisfies publication standards.
Book Synopsis From Windfall to Curse? by : Jonathan Di John
Download or read book From Windfall to Curse? written by Jonathan Di John and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of abundant oil resources in the 1920s, Venezuela has had an economically privileged position among the nations of Latin America, which has led to its being treated by economic and political analysts as an exceptional case. In her well-known study of Venezuela’s political economy, The Paradox of Plenty (1997), Stanford political scientist Terry Karl argued that this oil wealth induced extraordinary corruption, rent-seeking, and centralized intervention that resulted in restricting productivity and growth. What this and other studies of Venezuela’s economy fail to explain, however, is how such conditions have accompanied both growth and stagnation at different periods of Venezuela’s history and why countries experiencing similar levels of corruption and rent-seeking produce divergent developmental outcomes. By investigating the record of economic development in Venezuela from 1920 to the present, Jonathan Di John shows that the key to explaining why the economy performed much better between 1920 and 1980 than in the post-1980 period is to understand how political strategies interacted with economic strategies—specifically, how politics determined state capacity at any given time and how the stage of development and development strategies affected the nature of political conflicts. In emphasizing the importance of an approach that looks at the political economy, not just at the economy alone, Di John advances the field methodologically while he contributes to a long-needed history of Venezuela’s economic performance in the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Private and Public Initiatives by : J. van der Gaag
Download or read book Private and Public Initiatives written by J. van der Gaag and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank helps countries to arrive at whatever combination of public and private control is best for their particular economic circumstances. This booklet describes that work and summarizes examples of private-sector involvement in health and education provision in the developing world today. The examples also illustrate what the World Bank is doing to help bring those outside government-communities, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), private voluntary organizations, private providers, and corporations--into the design and implementation of social-service projects. Part 1 describes the historical roots of present trends--the development of modern health care systems, mass education systems--and the inequities that currently exist in health and education. The role of the World Bank in eliminating the social deficit and reducing poverty worldwide is described. The World Bank advocates using competitive markets to organize the production and distribution of goods and services and using a market-oriented approach to development. Part 2 offers examples of World Bank assistance in Kenya, Pakistan, Bolivia, India, Columbia, Burkino Faso, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, Estonia, and Brazil. Sixteen boxes, 5 figures, and 2 tables are included. (Contains 63 references.) (LMI)
