Book excerpt: The study investigated responses made by adults in the City of Rochester and Olmsted County, Minnesota to a Community Shelter Plan (CSP) and to OCD booklet H-14, 'In Time of Emergency.' A total of 493 interviews were completed during the study. This included independent control samples before and after CSP as well as a panel of 97 persons interviewed at both time periods. The CSP plan allocated public fallout shelters to residents based on their place of residence. Attention was adequate. Seventy-four percent were aware of receiving CSP materials and half read some of either the CSP maps or booklet H-14. Comprehension was less adequate, however. Only half the readers (24 percent of the total population) could correctly identify the shelter which the plan assigned them. Attitudes formed toward the CSP program were extremely favorable, but little change in behavior resulted. A slight increase was observed in attitudes toward shelters. No net change in adoption of either home or public shelters was found although a number of individuals switched their positions. (Author).

Book excerpt: The study investigated responses made by adults in Des Moines, Iowa, to the Community Shelter Plan (CSP). A total of 938 interviews were completed during the study. This included adequate control samples before and after publication of CSP as well as panels. One panel was initiated before CSP, other were continued from the researchers' earlier Home Fallout Protection Survey study. The CSP message included a plan allocating public fallout shelters to residents based on place of residence. It was published in the form of a 12-page Sunday newspaper advertising supplement. Attention given the message was about average with similar supplements (slightly less than half of the total audience), but comprehension of the plan was low. Only seven percent of our control sample could recall the name or location of a shelter allocated for his use and only four percent could recall how they were instructed to travel to the shelter. Acceptance responses were low. A slight increase was observed in level of knowledge about a local civil defense program and in the anticipatory decision to concurrently adopt public or home shelter protection alternatives. The dispositional model did not hold well in predicting attention to CSP, but did hold in predicting comprehension and acceptance responses. (Author).

Book excerpt: The academic biomedical research community is a hub of employment, economic productivity, and scientific progress. Academic research institutions are drivers of economic development in their local and state economies and, by extension, the national economy. Beyond the economic input that the academic biomedical research community both receives and provides, it generates knowledge that in turn affects society in myriad ways. The United States has experienced and continues to face the threat of disasters, and, like all entities, the academic biomedical research community can be affected. Recent disasters, from hurricanes to cyber-attacks, and their consequences have shown that the investments of the federal government and of the many other entities that sponsor academic research are not uniformly secure. First and foremost, events that damage biomedical laboratories and the institutions that house them can have impacts on the safety and well-being of humans and research animals. Furthermore, disasters can affect career trajectories, scientific progress, and financial stability at the individual and institutional levels. Strengthening the Disaster Resilience of the Academic Biomedical Research Community offers recommendations and guidance to enhance the disaster resilience of the academic biomedical research community, with a special focus on the potential actions researchers, academic research institutions, and research sponsors can take to mitigate the impact of future disasters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing the Unexpected presents the wealth of information derived from disasters around the world over the past 25 years. The authors explore how these findings can improve disaster programs, identify remaining research needs, and discuss disaster within the broader context of sustainable development. How do different people think about disaster? Are we more likely to panic or to respond with altruism? Why are 110 people killed in a Valujet crash considered disaster victims while the 50,000 killed annually in traffic accidents in the U.S. are not? At the crossroads of social, cultural, and economic factors, this book examines these and other compelling questions. The authors review the influences that shape the U.S. governmental system for disaster planning and response, the effectiveness of local emergency agencies, and the level of professionalism in the field. They also compare technological versus natural disaster and examine the impact of technology on disaster programs.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive Preparedness Guide (CPG) 101 provides guidelines on developing emergency operations plans (EOP). It promotes a common understanding of the fundamentals of risk-informed planning and decision making to help planners examine a hazard or threat and produce integrated, coordinated, and synchronized plans. The goal of CPG 101 is to make the planning process routine across all phases of emergency management and for all homeland security mission areas. This Guide helps planners at all levels of government in their efforts to develop and maintain viable all-hazards, all-threats EOPs. Accomplished properly, planning provides a methodical way to engage the whole community in thinking through the life cycle of a potential crisis, determining required capabilities, and establishing a framework for roles and responsibilities. It shapes how a community envisions and shares a desired outcome, selects effective ways to achieve it, and communicates expected results. Each jurisdiction's plans must reflect what that community will do to address its specific risks with the unique resources it has or can obtain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide insight into how Southeast Asian countries have responded to disasters, recovered, and rebuilt. It investigates emergency response and disaster recovery cases at national levels and from regional perspectives. Recovery from great disasters poses great challenges to affected countries in terms of organization, financing, and opportunities for post-disaster betterment. Importantly, disasters are critical moments in which to achieve disaster risk reduction, especially in the context of climate change and Sustainable Development Goals. Insights from these cases can help other countries better prepare for response and recovery before the next disaster strikes. While the experiences of disaster risk reduction and climate change implementation in Southeast Asian countries have been well documented, tacit knowledge from emergency response and recovery from these countries has not been transformed into explicit knowledge. There are only a few books that integrate information and lessons from post-disaster governance in Southeast Asia as a region, and because of the importance of providing real and recent situations, this book will interest many policymakers, practitioners, and academics. The information presented here will lead to a better understanding of how to plan for future disasters and improve governance to ensure effective emergency response as well as encouraging a build back better and safer towards a more resilient and sustained recovery.

Book excerpt: This text is an introduction to the study of towns and cities. The book synthesizes a wealth of material to provide a comprehensive introduction for students of urban geography, drawing on a rich blend of theoretical and empirical information, to advance their knowledge of the city. For the first time in the history of humankind, urban dwellers outnumber rural residents and this trend is destined to continue. Urban places, towns and cities are of fundamental importance: for the distribution of population within countries; in the organization of economic production, distribution and exchange; in the structuring of social reproduction and cultural life; and in the allocation and exercise of power. Even those living beyond the administrative or functional boundaries of a town or city, will have their lifestyle influenced to some degree by a nearby or distant city.
