The U.S. financial system is large and highly diversified. At the end-2007, total U.S. financial assets amounted to almost four and a half times the size of GDP. Of this, however, less than a one-fourth quarter of total financial assets were accounted for by traditional depository institutions. The crisis has radically changed the shape of the U.S. financial system in a short timeframe.

Book Synopsis TARP and other Bank Bailouts and Bail-Ins around the World by : Allen N. Berger
Download or read book TARP and other Bank Bailouts and Bail-Ins around the World written by Allen N. Berger and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial crises are recurring phenomena that result in the financial distress of systemically important banks, making it imperative to understand how to best respond to such crises and their consequences. Two policy responses became prominent for dealing with these distressed institutions since the last Global Financial Crisis: bailouts and bail-ins. The main questions surrounding these responses touch everyone: Are bailouts or bail-ins good for the financial system and the real economy? Is it essential to save distressed financial institutions by putting taxpayer money at risk in bailouts, or is it better to use private money in bail-ins instead? Are there better options, such as first lines of defense that help prevent such distress in the first place? Can countercyclical prudential and monetary policies lessen the likelihood and severity of the financial crises that often bring about this distress? Through careful analysis, authors Berger and Roman review and critically assess the extant theoretical and empirical research on many resolution approaches and tools. Placing special emphasis on lessons learned from one of the biggest bailouts of all time, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), while also reviewing other programs and tools, TARP and Other Bank Bailouts and Bail-Ins around the World sheds light on how best to protect the financial system on Wall Street and the real economy on Main Street. - Presents a well-informed and rich account of bailouts, bail-ins, and other resolution approaches to resolve financially distressed banks. - Uses TARP as a key case study of bailouts that has been thoroughly researched. - Provides valuable research and policy guidance for dealing with future financial crises.

This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses key findings of the Detailed Assessment of Observance of the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision (BCP) on the United States. The U.S. federal banking agencies have improved considerably in effectiveness. These improvements are reflected in the high degree of compliance with BCP in this current assessment. Shortcomings have been observed, particularly in the treatment of concentration risk and large exposures, but they do not raise concerns overall about the authorities’ ability to undertake effective supervision. These shortcomings should, however, be addressed if the United States is to achieve the standards of supervisory effectiveness expected of one of the most systemically important financial systems in the world.

Book Synopsis Yoruba Hometowns by : Lillian Trager
Download or read book Yoruba Hometowns written by Lillian Trager and published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pattern of migrants maintaining strong ties with their home communities is particularly common in sub-Saharan Africa, where it has important social, cultural, political, and economic implications. This book explores the significance of hometown connections for civil society and local development in Nigeria. Rich ethnographic description and case studies illustrate the links that the Ijesa Yoruba maintain with their communities of origin - links that both help to shape social identity and contribute to local development. Trager also examines indigenous concepts of development, demonstrating how the Yoruba bring their understandings of development to efforts in their own communities. Placing her work in the context of national political and economic change, she raises questions about the motivations, implications, and consequences of local development efforts, not only for the communities and their members, but also for the larger polity.
