After returning to the United States eight (8) men re-enlisted in the Regular Army. Of the twenty(20) men killed and missing - thirteen (13) were original members of the Company and seven (7) replacements. Of the eighty-eight (88) men wounded, gassed or accidentally wounded - seventy-seven (77) were original members of the Company and eleven (11) replacements. F Each member of the company was requested to have his photo graph taken by a German or French photographer for the purpose of making our history more valuable and complete. The boys were all willing to make the book a success and they responded very readily to this suggestion. In conjunction with this a number of pictures were taken by the boys themselves and nearly every picture in this book was photographed in France or Germany. It was necessary, however, in a few cases to obtain photographs after arriving home from boys or parents of the boys due to the fact that they were separated from the company, either being killed, wounded or sick at the time the other pictures were taken. It must be realized that each and every individual is possessed with original ideas especially regarding the terrible struggle which introduced into so many families a certain sorrow that will perhaps never be lived down. Imagination is a wonderful trait and is so often overestimated, but very few are possessed with the power to picture real action in the front as it really was. How well we would like to take each and every one of our readers, other than members of the company, through the battle scarred and devastated territories. This would be a wonderful course of military instruction and would teach more than we would ever be able to explain. This tour would burn into the brain of each individual certain pictures so that when the word war was mentioned there would leap before the eye visions causing a cer tain unusual tenderness of feeling for the boys who experienced ral suffering in the front lines and sacrificed their lives for their country. Its purpose is to put into concrete and abiding record the service of the entire regiment, which required of these men on the honor roll the supreme sacrifice. Space allows for a general presentation of experience only. Those who were "there" will recall similar incidents for their own home circles. The original plan was to have battalion and special company tell its own story, but the material collected showed too much overlapping and at the same time too little comprehension of the regiment's service. For example: it appeared that almost every man, certainly every outfit, had a drink on the Germans in Xammes, but just how the 353rd Infantry co-operated as a unit in gaining and holding that difficult portion of the line did not appear in any of the accounts. It was necessary, therefore, to bring the accounts of the different historians together into a continuous story. To do this, paragraphs had to be shifted from one statement to another, and then these statements tied together with a connecting thread to make of all a regimental history. The suggestion and inspiration for the history belongs to Colonel Reeves. The regimental historian gladly accords the battalion and company historians full credit for the material of the campaign chapters. No quotation marks were used because, as these chapters now stand, they are the result of the efforts of all contributors. Special acknowledgment is due to Capt. Carl G. Eades for the pictures. Mr. Connelly, secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society, and his staff lent invaluable co-operation in the initial stages of its preparation. Finally, the men of the regiment must thank Miss Florence Shoemaker and Miss Ruth Flesher for their help as stenographers, and the regimental historian wishes to share with his wife, whatever credit may be due him for his part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Fortieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry This volume is offered to survivors of the regiment as an outline history only; a bare statement of events with which we were closely identified, arranged chronologically, leaving comrades to supply details from memory. A more minute history would require access to official reports, orders etc., which the writer has not been able to obtain. What there is of the military history of the Officers and Men has been obtained under great difficulties. When the writer first determined to make a complete roster of the regiment, he expected to find all the material for such a paper in the Adjutant-General's office, at Columbus, but beyond the original muster-in rolls, this office has no records of our regiment, all others being at Washington City. Personal application for permission to copy, as well as a similar application by Adjutant-General Smith, of our State, was met by the statement that no copy of the rolls could be made by others than the clerks of the Department, and that they were so pressed with work that the courtesy was impossible. For this reason, all facts as to recruits, promotions, transfers, discharges, deaths, etc., have been obtained through a very general correspondence with comrades, many of whom have valuable memoranda. Great care has been taken to verify all statements as to those killed, dying in hospital, discharged or transferred; and all those enrolled and not thus accounted for, or by muster-out, may fairly be presumed to have served out their full time. Doubtless, errors and imperfections will be found in the roster, but it may serve as a basis for another, when some one, with better facilties, may undertake a more perfect record. As it is, the writer offers the result of his labors to his old comrades with the hope that they will find it of interest and value.
