Book Synopsis Algebraic Curves and Riemann Surfaces by : Rick Miranda
Download or read book Algebraic Curves and Riemann Surfaces written by Rick Miranda and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Miranda takes the approach that algebraic curves are best encountered for the first time over the complex numbers, where the reader's classical intuition about surfaces, integration, and other concepts can be brought into play. Therefore, many examples of algebraic curves are presented in the first chapters. In this way, the book begins as a primer on Riemann surfaces, with complex charts and meromorphic functions taking centre stage. But the main examples come fromprojective curves, and slowly but surely the text moves toward the algebraic category. Proofs of the Riemann-Roch and Serre Dualtiy Theorems are presented in an algebraic manner, via an adaptation of the adelic proof, expressed completely in terms of solving a Mittag-Leffler problem. Sheaves andcohomology are introduced as a unifying device in the later chapters, so that their utility and naturalness are immediately obvious. Requiring a background of one term of complex variable theory and a year of abstract algebra, this is an excellent graduate textbook for a second-term course in complex variables or a year-long course in algebraic geometry.

Book Synopsis Symmetries of Compact Riemann Surfaces by : Emilio Bujalance
Download or read book Symmetries of Compact Riemann Surfaces written by Emilio Bujalance and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with symmetries of compact Riemann surfaces. A symmetry of a compact Riemann surface S is an antianalytic involution of S. It is well known that Riemann surfaces exhibiting symmetry correspond to algebraic curves which can be defined over the field of real numbers. In this monograph we consider three topics related to the topology of symmetries, namely the number of conjugacy classes of symmetries, the numbers of ovals of symmetries and the symmetry types of Riemann surfaces.
Book Synopsis Compact Riemann Surfaces by : Jürgen Jost
Download or read book Compact Riemann Surfaces written by Jürgen Jost and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-12-13 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is novel in its broad perspective on Riemann surfaces: the text systematically explores the connection with other fields of mathematics. The book can serve as an introduction to contemporary mathematics as a whole, as it develops background material from algebraic topology, differential geometry, the calculus of variations, elliptic PDE, and algebraic geometry. The book is unique among textbooks on Riemann surfaces in its inclusion of an introduction to Teichmüller theory. For this new edition, the author has expanded and rewritten several sections to include additional material and to improve the presentation.

Book Synopsis Complex Algebraic Curves by : Frances Clare Kirwan
Download or read book Complex Algebraic Curves written by Frances Clare Kirwan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This development of the theory of complex algebraic curves was one of the peaks of nineteenth century mathematics. They have many fascinating properties and arise in various areas of mathematics, from number theory to theoretical physics, and are the subject of much research. By using only the basic techniques acquired in most undergraduate courses in mathematics, Dr. Kirwan introduces the theory, observes the algebraic and topological properties of complex algebraic curves, and shows how they are related to complex analysis.

Book Synopsis Riemann Surfaces and Algebraic Curves by : Renzo Cavalieri
Download or read book Riemann Surfaces and Algebraic Curves written by Renzo Cavalieri and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hurwitz theory, the study of analytic functions among Riemann surfaces, is a classical field and active research area in algebraic geometry. The subject's interplay between algebra, geometry, topology and analysis is a beautiful example of the interconnectedness of mathematics. This book introduces students to this increasingly important field, covering key topics such as manifolds, monodromy representations and the Hurwitz potential. Designed for undergraduate study, this classroom-tested text includes over 100 exercises to provide motivation for the reader. Also included are short essays by guest writers on how they use Hurwitz theory in their work, which ranges from string theory to non-Archimedean geometry. Whether used in a course or as a self-contained reference for graduate students, this book will provide an exciting glimpse at mathematics beyond the standard university classes.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Algebraic Curves by : Phillip A. Griffiths
Download or read book Introduction to Algebraic Curves written by Phillip A. Griffiths and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book differs from a number of recent books on this subject in that it combines analytic and geometric methods at the outset, so that the reader can grasp the basic results of the subject. Although such modern techniques of sheaf theory, cohomology, and commutative algebra are not covered here, the book provides a solid foundation to proceed to more advanced texts in general algebraic geometry, complex manifolds, and Riemann surfaces, as well as algebraic curves. Containing numerous exercises this book would make an excellent introductory text.

Download or read book Riemann Surfaces written by H. M. Farkas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is the culmination often years' work separately and joint ly. The idea of writing this book began with a set of notes for a course given by one of the authors in 1970-1971 at the Hebrew University. The notes were refined serveral times and used as the basic content of courses given sub sequently by each of the authors at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Hebrew University. In this book we present the theory of Riemann surfaces and its many dif ferent facets. We begin from the most elementary aspects and try to bring the reader up to the frontier of present-day research. We treat both open and closed surfaces in this book, but our main emphasis is on the compact case. In fact, Chapters III, V, VI, and VII deal exclusively with compact surfaces. Chapters I and II are preparatory, and Chapter IV deals with uniformization. All works on Riemann surfaces go back to the fundamental results of Rie mann, Jacobi, Abel, Weierstrass, etc. Our book is no exception. In addition to our debt to these mathematicians of a previous era, the present work has been influenced by many contemporary mathematicians.
Book Synopsis Riemann Surfaces by Way of Complex Analytic Geometry by : Dror Varolin
Download or read book Riemann Surfaces by Way of Complex Analytic Geometry written by Dror Varolin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011-08-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book establishes the basic function theory and complex geometry of Riemann surfaces, both open and compact. Many of the methods used in the book are adaptations and simplifications of methods from the theories of several complex variables and complex analytic geometry and would serve as excellent training for mathematicians wanting to work in complex analytic geometry. After three introductory chapters, the book embarks on its central, and certainly most novel, goal of studying Hermitian holomorphic line bundles and their sections. Among other things, finite-dimensionality of spaces of sections of holomorphic line bundles of compact Riemann surfaces and the triviality of holomorphic line bundles over Riemann surfaces are proved, with various applications. Perhaps the main result of the book is Hormander's Theorem on the square-integrable solution of the Cauchy-Riemann equations. The crowning application is the proof of the Kodaira and Narasimhan Embedding Theorems for compact and open Riemann surfaces. The intended reader has had first courses in real and complex analysis, as well as advanced calculus and basic differential topology (though the latter subject is not crucial). As such, the book should appeal to a broad portion of the mathematical and scientific community. This book is the first to give a textbook exposition of Riemann surface theory from the viewpoint of positive Hermitian line bundles and Hormander $\bar \partial$ estimates. It is more analytical and PDE oriented than prior texts in the field, and is an excellent introduction to the methods used currently in complex geometry, as exemplified in J. P. Demailly's online but otherwise unpublished book ``Complex analytic and differential geometry.'' I used it for a one quarter course on Riemann surfaces and found it to be clearly written and self-contained. It not only fills a significant gap in the large textbook literature on Riemann surfaces but is also rather indispensible for those who would like to teach the subject from a differential geometric and PDE viewpoint. --Steven Zelditch

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Riemann Surfaces by : Terrence Napier
Download or read book An Introduction to Riemann Surfaces written by Terrence Napier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook presents a unified approach to compact and noncompact Riemann surfaces from the point of view of the so-called L2 $\bar{\delta}$-method. This method is a powerful technique from the theory of several complex variables, and provides for a unique approach to the fundamentally different characteristics of compact and noncompact Riemann surfaces. The inclusion of continuing exercises running throughout the book, which lead to generalizations of the main theorems, as well as the exercises included in each chapter make this text ideal for a one- or two-semester graduate course.

Book Synopsis Dessins d'Enfants on Riemann Surfaces by : Gareth A. Jones
Download or read book Dessins d'Enfants on Riemann Surfaces written by Gareth A. Jones and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an introduction to dessins d'enfants and embeddings of bipartite graphs in compact Riemann surfaces. The first part of the book presents basic material, guiding the reader through the current field of research. A key point of the second part is the interplay between the automorphism groups of dessins and their Riemann surfaces, and the action of the absolute Galois group on dessins and their algebraic curves. It concludes by showing the links between the theory of dessins and other areas of arithmetic and geometry, such as the abc conjecture, complex multiplication and Beauville surfaces. Dessins d'Enfants on Riemann Surfaces will appeal to graduate students and all mathematicians interested in maps, hypermaps, Riemann surfaces, geometric group actions, and arithmetic.
