Ninguno de los seres humanos se puede dar vida a sí mismo. Antes que ellos nacieran, alguien superior los ha precedido, de la misma manera que antes de nacer un hijo existen ya su padre y su madre. Así, este libro es una reafirmación de nuestra fe, expresada de una manera muy sencilla y sin ninguna complicación. Este libro es también un recordatorio para nosotros amar a nuestra Iglesia y defenderla a pesar de que haya muchas cosas que nos puedan provocar desencanto. No debemos desanimarnos; al contrario, debemos estar felices de saber el camino que conduce a la paz y a la salvación. La Iglesia se inició con la traición de Judas, que contribuyó a la cruz de Jesús. Este tipo de hechos seguirán estando presentes en nuestra Iglesia, en nuestras comunidades, e incluso en el comportamiento de nuestros líderes. Pero, si Dios está con nosotros, ¿quién puede estar contra nosotros? Jesús nos ha marcado el camino que debemos seguir si queremos estar con Dios nuestro Padre. Mi libro está escrito en armonía con las enseñanzas de la fe católica y el mensaje va directo al corazón de la persona humana. El contenido del libro nos invita a mantener la fe con el fin de comprender mejor nuestro papel en un mundo lleno de violencia y de secularismo. Piensan que pueden escoger y elegir lo que quieran y como quieran. Sin embargo, es importante entender que la Iglesia no es, y nunca ha sido, una democracia. La Iglesia es jerárquica y encuentra su fundamento en la autoridad que el Señor Jesús recibió del Padre. Con esa autoridad, Él dijo a Pedro: " Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia, y el poder del infierno no la derrotará".

The universal and timeless appeal of the novel, however, has distanced its hero from its author and its author from his own life and the time in which he lived. The discussion of the novel’s Catholic identity, therefore, is based on a reading that returns Cervantes’s hero to Cervantes’s text and Cervantes to the events that most shaped his life. The authors and texts McGrath cites, as well as his arguments and interpretations, are mediated by his religious sensibility. Consequently, he proposes that his study represents one way of interpreting Don Quixote and acts as a complement to other approaches. It is McGrath’s assertion that the religiosity and spirituality of Cervantes’s masterpiece illustrate that Don Quixote is inseparable from the teachings of Catholic orthodoxy. Furthermore, he argues that Cervantes’s spirituality is as diverse as early modern Catholicism. McGrath does not believe that the novel is primarily a religious or even a serious text, and he considers his arguments through the lens of Cervantine irony, satire, and multiperspectivism. As a Roman Catholic who is a Hispanist, McGrath proposes to reclaim Cervantes’s Catholicity from the interpretive tradition that ascribes a predominantly Erasmian reading of the novel. When the totality of biographical and sociohistorical events and influences that shaped Cervantes’s religiosity are considered, the result is a new appreciation of the novel’s moral didactic and spiritual orientation.

Book excerpt: Benito Pérez Galdós, considered Spain’s most important novelist after Cervantes, wrote 77 novels, several works of theater and a number of other tomes during his lifetime (1843–1920). His works have been translated into all major languages of the world, and many of his most highly regarded novels, those of the contemporary period, have been translated into English two, three and even four times over. Of the few “contemporary novels” of Galdós that until now have not come to light in English, The Forbidden is certainly among the most noteworthy. The story line concerns a wealthy philanderer, José María Bueno de Guzmán, who attempts to buy the favors of his three beautiful married cousins. He is successful with the first, Eloísa, a grasping materialist who falls deeply in love with him. Then he rejects her in order to attempt to seduce the youngest, Camila. Meanwhile, the third, the pseudo-intellectual María Juana, jealous, seduces José María. But it is Camila, healthy, impetuous and wild, who resists his temptations and holds our attention. The novelist and critic Leopoldo Alas, Galdós’s contemporary, calls her “the most feminine, graceful, lively female character that any modern novelist has painted.” As a naturalistic study, in the manner of Balzac in particular, principal characters of Galdós’s other novels (El doctor Centeno, La de Bringas, La familia de León Roch) become fleetingly visible in The Forbidden. In addition, the entire Bueno de Guzmán family gives evidence of the naturalistic emphasis on heredity: they all display certain physical or mental disorders. Eloísa has a morbid fear of feathers, María Juana often feels that she has a tiny piece of cloth caught in her teeth, José María suffers bouts of depression, an uncle is a kleptomaniac, one of the relatives writes letters to himself, etc. At the same time, this novel shows the foibles of Spanish society where status is determined by one’s associates, by the wearing of finery, and by living on borrowed money. In their history of Spanish literature, Chandler and Schwartz call Galdós “the greatest novelist of the nineteenth century and the only one who deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with great novelists like Balzac, Dickens and Dostoievsky.” The Forbidden, written at the height of the author’s creative powers, is a major work and its publication for an English-speaking audience is long overdue.
