Book excerpt: The Holy Spirit movement in eighteenth century England gave rise to a religious revival that gave birth to the family of churches we know today as the wesleyans. Thus, by his importance as the genius organizer, it is essential to know the life and thought of one of the pillars within the Wesleyan movement: John Wesley. In this book - of a very simple and yet profound way- Dr. Magallanes offers us the most basic traits of the social-religious context in which Wesley lived in the England of the eighteenth century, aspects that influenced the family development of his character and spirituality, the education and training received in Oxford, experiences that awakened in Wesley his passion for evangelization and the doctrine of the holiness of heart and life that characterized the movement.

Book Synopsis Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God by : Jonathan Edwards
Download or read book Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Chapel Library. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preached at Enfield, Connecticut on July 8, 1741, this is perhaps the greatest sermon ever preached in America—and is certainly among the most well known. Owing to its forthright dealing with God’s wrath and His intense hatred of sin and the sinner, it is also one of the most controversial. Indeed, for more than three-quarters of the sermon Edwards lays down a relentless stream of the most vivid and horrifying descriptions of the danger facing unregenerate men. While it is difficult to read such graphic language, there is abundant hope in the sermon’s conclusion. Edwards puts it this way, “And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day wherein Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open and stands calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners.” While those who would rather ignore God’s justice in favor of His mercy condemn Edwards and his sermon, those who were present and actually heard him preach that day reacted in a decidedly different manner. According to the diary of Reverend Stephen Williams who attended the sermon, “Before the sermon was done there was a great moaning and crying through the whole House, ‘what shall I do to be saved; oh, I am going to hell, etc.’” The diary goes on to indicate that Edwards had to interrupt his sermon and come down to minister to those who were under such awful conviction. And so, in spite of what the scoffers might think or say, “the amazing and astonishing power of God” was manifested among the people that day—with many falling not into the hands of an angry God, but into the arms of a mighty Savior.

Book Synopsis Faith's Checkbook (Sea Harp Timeless series) by : Charles H. Spurgeon
Download or read book Faith's Checkbook (Sea Harp Timeless series) written by Charles H. Spurgeon and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Scripture, God promises the impossible to those who believe. For many Christians, the promises of God have lost their power. Deemed as irrelevant or simply misunderstood, God's promises—of triumph, abundance, redemption, and countless blessings—are often ignored, forgotten, and seemingly unfulfilled. However, for Charles H. Spurgeon, God’s promises were timeless. In fact, they seemed to grow in power and hope over the course of his life. In Faith’s Checkbook, Spurgeon shares his personal experience testing and proving Scripture’s promises and his ongoing discovery of a relentlessly good, kind and faithful God. He urges believers to treat God’s promises as they would a check—to receive them, endorse them and actively "cash them in." Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), renowned 19th century Baptist preacher, is best known for his 1866 publication Morning and Evening. Over 20 years later, Spurgeon wrote Faith’s Checkbook, a yearlong devotional that inspires believers to see and experience God’s goodness. Written near the end of his life, in the depths of a season marked by incredible loneliness, spiritual controversies and health complications, Faith’s Checkbook is full of honest, heartfelt and mature hope. Spurgeon’s breathtaking sincerity and provoking thoughts will encourage believers to: Study and engage God’s promises throughout Scripture Expect these promises to be fulfilled in their daily life Participate by receiving God’s promises and praying for their fulfillment Glimpse God’s boundless goodness and faithfulness Discover a renewed, child-like trust in Him In Faith’s Checkbook, the reader will encounter God’s outstretched hand—through promises of provision, wisdom, fruitfulness, presence and much more—and be invited to respond with hopeful anticipation.

John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. Download or read book Preaching written by John F. MacArthur and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2005-08-21 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many sermons preached today lack the divine knowledge and spiritual understanding available only through dynamic expository preaching. In Preaching: How to Preach Biblically, John MacArthur’' well-known passion for the Bible combines with the expertise of faculty members at The Master's Seminary to inspire and equip preachers in effective biblical preaching. Preaching: How to Preach Biblically flows from biblical foundations for expository preaching through a detailed process of developing expositions and creating sermons to the actual delivery of expository messages, connecting what pastors learn in seminary with the sermons preached in a local church. This volume shows how to progress purposefully from one phase to the next in preparing to minister to God's people through preaching. This book answers these questions and more: What is expository, biblical preaching? What are the theological and historical foundations for insisting on expository preaching? What are the steps involved in preparation for and participation in biblical preaching? What models exist for expository preaching today? The Master's Seminary faculty, with over thirty years' experience in preaching and seminary training of preachers, contributes a treasury of expertise alongside insights from expositor John MacArthur. While united on their commitment to exposition, the variety of individual expressions and methodological preferences discussed offers beneficial assistance for any preacher seeking a higher level of expository excellence.
