Book excerpt: The Niger Delta region of Nigeria is a location with massive oil deposits that have been extracted by its government and multinational oil companies for decades. Oil from the region has generated enormous financial returns to the government and oil companies in the country, but the local people have seen little benefit from the revenues. This study examined how residents of the region perceive the impact of oil extraction activities and its effects on groundwater, which is the main source of their potable water. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations were detected in groundwater samples all around the region exceeding national and international acceptable limits for drinking water quality. These results, supported by spatial analysis of the region's oil spillage reports, reinforced the communities' assertion that their groundwater has been rendered unsafe due to petroleum activities.

The assessment has been unprecedented. Over a 14-month period, the UNEP team examined more than 200 locations, surveyed 122 kilometres of pipeline rights of way, reviewed more than 5,000 medical records and engaged over 23,000 people at local community meetings. The environmental restoration of Ogoniland could prove to be the world's most wide-ranging and long term oil clean-up exercise ever undertaken if contaminated drinking water, land, creeks and important ecosystems such as mangroves are to be brought back to full, productive health. The report key findings are alarming both in terms of human health protection and environmental protection: some areas, which appear unaffected at the surface, are in reality severely contaminated underground; at least 10 Ogoni communities where drinking contaminated water; control and maintenance of oilfield infrastructure in Ogoniland has been and remains inadequate; the impact of oil on mangrove vegetation has been disastrous. The report recommends direct actions in order to address the Niger Delta contamination by oil and warns that the restoration of the area could take up years.

It examined the problems associated with oil exploration and its mitigation. Primary and Secondary data were used to source data for the set objectives. The theoretical framework was based on the resource curse theory and the environmental externalities theory. It was established that various problems such as oil spillage, retardation of vegetation growth, soil infertility, ill-health to members of the community, displacement of the people of the area, constant protestation of host communities, socio-economic deprivation, and perceived marginalization of the people are associated with oil resource exploration. This research concludes that the oil bearing communities have not adequately been compensated for harm done them through degradation of the ecosystem caused by several years of oil exploration. Their oil resource wealth has been turned to oil resource curse as they are disempowered, and condemned to perpetual underdevelopment. It is recommended that Federal Government should exert maximum efforts in assuring strict compliance of its legal instruments by the oil participating industries for a sustainable development in the region.

It has caused so much issues that has affected the habitation of the people who live there. This topic bothers also on the application of the resource curse theory and the sustainable development theory that deals with the reason behind resource-rich countries not developing effectively and also the reason behind innovation activities destroying the environment to the detriment of future generations.The bulk of the research work which is to be done on this project is executed using a doctrinal approach primarily facilitated by libraries and the internet as useful guides. By consequence, all the statements of legal principle and its administration is dependent of this research methodology. A significant portion of information for this research work is sourced from internet materials, journals, and articles.In recent times. 881 cases of oil spills have been recorded between January 2019 and April 2021. This spillage happened in 12 states within the country. The information stated above is obtained from a government-run satellite tracker known as the NOSDRA. It was also recorded that 77 percent of the spills majorly occurred in only 3 oil-producing states in Nigeria. The total oil spillage within this period has been equaled to about 43,000 barrels of oil of which the monetary value is worth $3 million at the international market and 1.23 billion naira in the national markets.This research work has highlighted these issues and has proffered solutions on how the problem of environmental degradation by oil multinationals can be resolved. Based on the result on the research work conducted, it was deduced that oil exploration and exploitation serviced have caused alterations in the environment. These alterations have been examined and this research work has given a rise of hope that the terrible and devastating state of the Niger Delta can be salvaged and restored to normality.Environmental Restoration can be achieved when we stop the practice of illegal dumping of il and other hazardous wastes within our environment. This also includes prosecuting employees and officials responsible for authorizing illegal dumping. Adherence to the Department of Petroleum Resources regulations for clean-ups should also be encouraged.

Book excerpt: The 1990s heralded waves of spectacular forms of local resistance and globalized protest against oil exploitation and environmental pollution in oil-producing regions of the developing world. One of the most spectacular local uprisings against global oil multinationals was led by the Ogoni people who were protesting against the exploitation and marginalization of oil-producing ethnic minority communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. However, the hanging on November 10, 1995 of nine Ogoni ethnic minority and environmental justice activists, including Ken Saro-Wiwa, only served to exacerbate protests in later years. Within a decade, dozens of locally rooted insurgent groups emerged in the Niger Delta and construed themselves as part of the social movement for ethnic minority rights and environmental justice which dates back to colonial times. However, the trajectory of the revolutionary momentum has changed over time, reflecting a mix of progressive, opportunistic and retrogressive trends. This book provides a critical study of the trajectory of struggles in the Niger Delta since 1995, paying attention to continuities and changes, including recent developments linked to the shift from local resistance, to the rupturing of the Presidential Amnesty peace deal (largely to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) and the resurgence low-intensity sporadic armed militancy—led by the Niger Delta Avengers militia among others. The contributors critically interrogate the nature of the region’s political economy, socio-economic trends and trajectories over the past two decades. This collection also accentuates the lessons learnt, prospects for self-determination, socio-economic and environmental justice and peace in the aftermath of the hanging.
