Book excerpt: "The goal of the Citywide Action Plan is to upgrade 50 per cent of the existing unplanned and unserviced areas by 2020 while simultaneously preventing the formation of new unplanned settlements in Dar es Salaam. The thematic action plans on land, basic services, housing and capacity building are divided into short-term (2010), medium-term (2011-2015) and long-term (2015-2020) periods and include cost estimates for all actions. The Action Plan is the result of a consultative process involving all city stakeholders and partners, driven since 2005 by the Government of Tanzania and the Dar es Salaam Local Authorities, with technical assistance from UN-HABITAT and funding from Cities Alliance. It is intended that the implementation of this Action Plan, in close collaboration with other ongoing programmes, will be managed by a citywide slum upgrading and prevention programme unit, to be established at the Dar es Salaam local authority level. The Action Plan is expected to contribute to achieving the goals of MKUKUTA (National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction, National Vision 2025, National Housing Policy, and the MDG targets related to water, sanitation, and slums."--Page 4 of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this book reconsiders the whole question of urbanisation and planning in the Third World. It argues that public involvement, which is now an accepted part of Western planning, should be used more in Third World cities. It shows that many inhabitants of Third World cities are migrants from rural areas and have very definite ideas about what the function of the city should be and what it ought to offer; and it goes on to argue that therefore a planning process which involves more public participation would better serve local needs and would do much more to solve problems than the contemporary approach.

Book excerpt: The UN currently estimates that there are about 837 million urban slum dwellers worldwide, and this figure is likely to rise to 1.5 billion by 2020 if current trends are not reversed. This book offers five geographically and institutionally diverse case studies from Latin America, where some of the longest-running and most successful programmes in this field have been conducted. These programmes, involving a wide variety of funding arrangements and agencies, demonstrate the positive impact that community participation and people-oriented service solutions can have on slum upgrading efforts in low income urban areas.

Book excerpt: The development of poor countries has so often meant the export of Northern technology for ambitious schemes designed to make money the latest giant dam, oil refinery, logging process or pesticide factory. But such 'aid' has frequently been ecologically destructive and its crippling cost has ended up making life immeasurably worse for those it was supposed to help. Using examples from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this book shows there are forms of development that allow people to control their own resources while improving their condition and enhancing their environment. The 33 case studies from agriculture, fishing and industry were commissioned by the International Institute for Environment and Development from people closely involved in the projects, with overviews by Robert Chambers, John Michael Kramer, Marilyn Carr, David Butcher and Yves Cabannes. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the implementation of slum upgrading projects and the last generation of citywide programmes that define the future urban configuration of informal settlements, from a citywide perspective, in the Earth’s tropical region. The book presents a study on regeneration experiences in Asia and Latin America and it identifies important points of connection and similarities between the two cases, while also determining that, compared to Asia, informality in Latin America is in its ‘second generation.’
