Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to all other racial/ethnic groups, Chicana/os are the most under represented population within doctorate production in the United States. Furthermore, even though data shows a slight increase in Chicana/o doctorate production, these gains are small in relation to the dramatic population growth of Chicana/os in the U.S. from 1990 to 2000 (U.S. Bureau of the Census 2000). In considering this issue, the authors examine a distinct feature of Chicana/o doctorate production: nearly one-fourth of Chicana/o doctorates first attended a community college, more than two times the overall rate for all doctorates. In fact, studies show that about two-thirds of all Latina/o students begin their postsecondary career in community colleges (Ornelas 2002; Ornelas & Solorzano 2004). Indeed, community colleges have long provided three primary functions: (1) vocational education/certificate programs; (2) terminal Associate of Art/Science degrees; and (3) transfer opportunities to four-year institutions. Even though 71% of Latina/o students who enter a community college desire to transfer to a four-year institution, only 7% to 20% end up doing so (U.S. Department of Education 2001). Of the three, the transfer function best prepares students to continue on to four-year colleges with the possibility of then continuing on to graduate and professional school. This report is a first attempt to shed some light on this little-known path to graduate school for Chicana and Chicano students. (Contains 5 figures.) But despite years of analysis of this failure, no consensus has been reached as to how to realistically address it. Taking a new approach to these issues, Marcos Pizarro goes directly to Chicana/o students in both urban and rural school districts to ask what their school experiences are really like, how teachers and administrators support or thwart their educational aspirations, and how schools could better serve their Chicana/o students. In this accessible, from-the-trenches account of the Chicana/o school experience, Marcos Pizarro makes the case that racial identity formation is the crucial variable in Chicana/o students' success or failure in school. He draws on the insights of students in East Los Angeles and rural Washington State, as well as years of research and activism in public education, to demonstrate that Chicana/o students face the daunting challenge of forming a positive sense of racial identity within an educational system that unintentionally yet consistently holds them to low standards because of their race. Book excerpt: Abstract: Community college trustees are critical to the success of the organization and the students they serve because they provide the voice of local needs in alignment with the college mission. Community college trusteeship in California is vital given the changing student demographic, the growing number of Latinos enrolled, and their need for responsive institutions. The diversity of the board is therefore critical to ensuring that the diverse needs are being met. However, little is known about the lives of California's community college trustees and how they transform educational settings. The purpose of this qualitative study is to shed light on the personal, educational, professional, and trusteeship journey of five Chicana/Latina trailblazers, the first Chicana/Latinas to be elected to their district. Using testimonio methodology to give voice to this group of women, this study is set in the Chicana Feminist Epistemological stance, which put these participants in the center of this study, providing the participants an opportunity to co-create knowledge, and allowed the researcher to apply the use of Chicana intuition, to guide the study design. The theoretical framework, Latino Critical Theory (LatCrit) was used as the analytical lens exposing raced, classed, and gendered experiences in the school setting. Through the use of a LatCrit lens, this study exposed the participant's experiential knowledge, critical to their successful navigation oftheir trusteeship, creating more responsive institutions. The findings reveal that these participants, as a collective, felt the trauma of the race, class and gendered experiences in the educational setting. These experiences shaped their worldview. Nonetheless the women developed aspirations to become educators and these aspirations led them to college where they were able to move beyond internal oppression by developing a social consciousness and develop a Chicana identity. These experiences led them to social activism, which served as the path to community college trusteeship. They became the first Chicana/Latina community college trustees in their district, taking a seat at the dais and it is there that these trailblazers created a legacy of inclusion and transformed the educational setting.
