Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demands on the construction industry are changing, and it is now virtually essential for environmental management to be considered at all stages of a project. Many construction managers are finding a quantitative approach useful, and this book outlines four quantitative methods which can be applied at different construction stages, and which fit within a comprehensive framework of dynamic Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). These include: a method to quantitatively evaluate and reduce pollution and hazards levels a method to evaluate the environmental-consciousness of proposed construction plans a method to reduce on-site construction wastes through an incentive reward programme a method to promote C and D waste exchange in the local construction industry. With an experimental case study of the application of these methods, this book delivers a comprehensive review of environmental management issues in construction. With regulatory requirements potentially favouring the quantitative approach, this timely guide ensures that contractors will be able to keep pace with environmental management standards.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Living with Environmental Risks by : Nobuhiro Kaneko
Download or read book Sustainable Living with Environmental Risks written by Nobuhiro Kaneko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are not free from environmental risks that accompany the development of human societies. Modern economic development has accelerated environmental pollution, caused loss of natural habitats, and modified landscapes. These environmental changes have impacted natural systems: water and heat circulation, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity. These changes in natural systems degrade ecosystem services and subsequently increase environmental risks for humans. Environmental risks, therefore, are not only human health risks by pollution, climatic anomalies and natural disasters, but also degradation of ecosystem services on which most people are relying for their lives. We cannot entirely eliminate the risks, because it is not possible to attain zero impact on the environment, but we need to find a mechanism that minimizes environmental risks for human sustainably. This is the idea of the interdisciplinary framework of “environmental risk management” theory, which advocates harmony between economic development and environmental conservation. Based on this theory, the Sustainable Living with Environmental Risk (SLER) programme, adopted by the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT) as one of its strategic programmes, has been training graduate students at the Yokohama National University, Japan, from 2009 to 2013 to become future environmental leaders who will take the initiative in reducing the level of environmental risks and in protecting natural resources in the developing nations of Asia and Africa. This book provides students and teachers of this new academic field with a comprehensive coverage of case studies of environmental risks and their practical management technologies not only in Japan but also in developing nations in Asia and Africa.
Book Synopsis Project Management for Environmental, Construction and Manufacturing Engineers by : Nolberto Munier
Download or read book Project Management for Environmental, Construction and Manufacturing Engineers written by Nolberto Munier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a companion to books on project-management theory, this book illustrates, in a down-to-earth, comprehensive style, how to put that theory into practice. In addition to the many examples that illustrate procedures, the book includes over 25 case studies, each one addressing a specific theme. Key topics, such as project selection, negotiations, planning and scheduling, cost and budgeting, project control, human resources, environmental impacts, risk management, and financial evaluation, are discussed, using a step-by-step approach. Beginning at the grassroots level, some cases are solved by hand to illustrate the mechanics of a procedure, while others are solved using advanced computer programs. In this way the reader has a clear idea of the problem, how and when to raise the issue, information needed (and who can provide it), how to solve it by hand, when possible, and also its resolution using the latest informatics tools.

Book excerpt: This is the third book of the series that has documented best practice within the building industry, detailing the many processes required to procure buildings. The first book, titled City of Layers: Reconfiguring the Built Environment for Sustainability, outlines how buildings can be procured sustainably. The second book, titled The Project Managers Checklist for Building Projects, Delivery Strategies and Processes, details how design and procurement processes should be planned and managed. This third book focuses on construction, post-design, and procurement. It outlines how the planned and desired outcome in terms of quality can be achieved safely whilst minimising harm to the environment. Each book was formatted for operational use for specific projects, providing a roadmap of information with checklists that also doubles as a valuable and portable paper trail, adding value to the projects quality assurance processes. On completion of project, this book, complete with project notes, can provide a historical record of what was considered and what was done at each phase of the project life. This third book, titled Construction Supervision: QC + HSE Management in Practice, details the in-practice monitoring and controlling aspects of construction works. It outlines what should be considered as the supervision process is planned and what should be actioned as construction works proceeds. In writing this book, the hope is such knowledge will enable practitioners to focus on doing the required things and ensuring the things are done as right so construction liabilities and risks are minimised/mitigated, and thereby, substantial value is added to what is done, benefiting both the project and society at large.

Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements by : Edmundo Werna
Download or read book Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements written by Edmundo Werna and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routledge Handbook on Labour in Construction and Human Settlements presents a detailed and comprehensive examination of the relationship between labour and the built environment, and synergises these critical focus areas in innovative ways. This unrivalled edited collection of chapters analyses problems and presents possible solutions related to the employment and conditions of workers in the construction industry. It provides comprehensive coverage of the relationship between the global workforce and the built environment and is divided into four topical areas: how labour and the built environment relate to development; employment generation in the built environment; quality of employment in the built environment; and the impact of the built environment on labour in other sectors. Underpinning the entire book is the premise that the way the built environment is produced, and its main products – buildings, cities and towns – have an impact on large numbers of workers. At the same time, the quality of the built environment requires construction workers who are well trained and with good working conditions. While cities and towns are the engines of economic growth, they will not be able to fulfil their economic potential if poverty in the workforce is not addressed. Those who are unemployed, underemployed or work in unfavourable conditions cannot fully contribute to production, and at the same time are limited in their ability to purchase goods and services – therefore limiting economic growth and restricting improvements in their living standards. In addition, investments in infrastructure, housing and inner-city redevelopment cannot be sustainable if labour issues – i.e., poverty – are not addressed. This book aims at analysing this complex set of issues comprehensively and will be essential reading to a wide range of researchers across the interdisciplinary intersections of construction, business and management, economic development, urban studies, sociology, political science and project management.

Book Synopsis Integrated Management Systems for Construction by : Alan Griffith
Download or read book Integrated Management Systems for Construction written by Alan Griffith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated management systems (IMS) are an innovative way of handling the plethora of management functions and procedures that are applied throughout major construction projects. Contracting companies use management systems to shape and define the corporate arrangement of their business activities, translating these into operational procedures for application to the construction projects they undertake. The management of quality, environment, and safety are at the forefront of systems evolution where the integration of these traditionally independent and dedicated standards-based and process-orientated systems can provide the potential to deliver greater organisational efficiency and effectiveness. This is the first textbook to cover each of the international standards for quality, safety and environment (ISO9000, ISO14001 and ISO18001) and to discuss integrating them. This book provides a detailed yet accessible text to support the study of quality, environment, and safety management systems on professionally accredited undergraduate courses throughout the built environment and for advanced postgraduate courses in construction, project, and engineering management. It is also an indispensible reference for construction professionals working for principal contractors, subcontractors and construction industry supply chain organisations.

Download or read book Environmental Policy, Assessment and Communication written by David Canter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-07 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, reissued now with a new series introduction, Environmental Policy, Assessment and Communication, was the second in a trilogy of books to open the series Ethnoscapes: Current Challenges in the Environmental Social Sciences. These three titles brought together specially commissioned contributions that cover much of the range of topics that the series as a whole would cover. Although the following volumes would not have the same format, the opening trilogy gave an overview of what was to come, while also providing a broad base for the future authors to build upon. This volume has a practical orientation. Its contributions deal directly with research on those environmental matters on which government agencies and other organisations formulate policies or develop design strategies. This therefore covers the assessment and evaluation of designs and design proposals as well as background research to policy issues.
