Instead, gendered communal violence is shown to be governed by the interaction of an elite ideology and the unique economic, social and political dynamics at work in each instance of conflict. Book excerpt: This dataset is used to describe the context, process, analysis, and interpretation of an ethnographic research interview. It was part of the data I collected through my fieldwork in Gujarat, a state of India. It contributed to my PhD at the Institute of Health Research, Lancaster University, UK (2003--2007). My research explored the experiences of women who had experienced sexual violence and registered a complaint of rape with the police. The participants included rape victims, aged 16--45 (a number of participants were not aware of their exact age), their family members, samaj (social group to which they belonged); medico-legal professionals (doctors, nurses, ayahs [support staff in hospitals]); legal professionals: lawyers, judges, public prosecutors (government appointed pleaders), police; civil society professionals (field workers, programme heads, heads of organizations) in urban and rural areas of Gujarat, a state of India. I use the word victim to reflect the repetitive traumas endured by women as a result of their experiences of the systems put in place to respond to their reporting of rape. The dataset files are accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide.
