The first section is comprised of a contiguously-written compilation of sermons and notes on sermons, which occupies all or part of 148 leaves running from front to back. Written in English, Hebrew, and Greek, this section records annual sermons preached before the Court of Elections and the Massachusetts Military Company, with entries dated between 1661 and 1681. Represented within the text are sermons by noteworthy Puritan divines, including John Norton, Samuel Torrey, Richard Mather, John Davenport, Samuel Danforth, and others. Running from back to front, the secondary section of the text is comprised primarily of classical and biblical extracts in Greek and Hebrew. Signed and dated 1652 on the first leaf, the secondary portion is written on all or part of 23 leaves.

Highlights within the manuscript are musical notations for eight songs and song lyrics for an additional 18 songs, including "Mount Vernon," the drinking song, "Nothing Like Grog," and a possible War of 1812-era song of an impressed sailor, "The Galley Slave." ... In sum, the manuscript is comprised of approximately 12 pages of legal notes, 16 pages of song lyrics, and 12 pages of music, plus a few additional pages, mostly musical stave lines. ... Some of the legal cases cited in the manuscript refer to cases before James Riddle, president of the court, who was born in Adams County PA, graduated from Princeton University, and was admitted to the bar in 1784. He served as presiding judge of the Chambersburg Judicial District from 1794-1804. Later he was in private practice. He died in about 1837. These present notes may have been copied out by W. Book excerpt: Scarlett's Sisters explores the meaning of nineteenth-century southern womanhood from the vantage point of the celebrated fictional character's flesh-and-blood counterparts: young, elite, white women. Anya Jabour demonstrates that southern girls and young women faced a major turning point when the Civil War forced them to assume new roles and responsibilities as independent women. Examining the lives of more than 300 girls and women between ages fifteen and twenty-five, Jabour traces the socialization of southern white ladies from early adolescence through young adulthood. Amidst the upheaval of the Civil War, Jabour shows, elite young women, once reluctant to challenge white supremacy and male dominance, became more rebellious. They adopted the ideology of Confederate independence in shaping a new model of southern womanhood that eschewed dependence on slave labor and male guidance. By tracing the lives of young white women in a society in flux, Jabour reveals how the South's old social order was maintained and a new one created as southern girls and young women learned, questioned, and ultimately changed what it meant to be a southern lady.

The details of daily living, of the marrying, working, and dying of the neighbors and kin in the photo album from New Bedford, demonstrate the personal side of the development of this famous whaling capital through its transition to a strong mill economy. These details also show how the financial and intellectual capital of the city fueled development throughout the United States. This album with its very small cast of neighbors and kin thus unfolds to offer a glimpse of the rich panorama of nineteenth-century New Bedford. The biographical sketches of the onstage and offstage players combined with the histories presented (of New Bedford, of nineteenth-century social media, and of the album itself) reveal a snapshot of New Bedford’s citizens, New Bedford’s history and industries, and, importantly, New Bedford’s part in the Civil War. Frozen in Time presents local history in the broader context of the United States and can be seen as well as an example of petite histoire – an account of particular households and neighborhoods, reminding readers of the continuing importance of both family and neighborhoods, real or virtual. The discussion of nineteenth-century social media also shows those in the twenty-first century that Facebook can be seen as old social media on a new platform. The photographs from the time of the Civil War underscore the arc of photography from its first use capturing images of war to its present use to record violence perpetuated on and perpetuated by police and others at home and around the world. Lukesh was entrusted with the family album that is the basis for Frozen in Time and used her experience in research, artifact interpretation, and writing to develop the narrative of the book.
