Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Plants of Longleaf Pine-Bluestem Range Numbered studs were machined $48 On a planer equipped with a crook reducer, then graded by spie rules and tallied. Within 10 to 15 days of planing, the weight, twist, crook, and bow of each stud were recorded. All were then carefully stacked with sticks in a building controlled at 72 F. And 50 percent rh. After 6 weeks on sticks, the lumber reached approximate equilibrium moisture content (emg), and the weight, crook, twist, and bow were again recorded. Ovendry weights and specific gravity were calculated from determinations made on 2-inch cross-sectional slices from ends of all studs. Book excerpt: Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) ecosystems once occupied 38 million ha in the Southeastern United States, occurring as forests, woodlands, and savannas on a variety of sites ranging from wet flatwoods to xeric sandhills and rocky mountainous ridges. Characterized by an open parklike structure, longleaf pine ecosystems are a product of frequent fires, facilitated by the presence of fallen pine needles and bunchgrasses in the understory. Timber harvest, land conversion to agricultural and other nonforest uses, and alteration of fire regimes greatly reduced longleaf pine ecosystems, until only 1.2 million ha remained in 1995. Longleaf pine ecosystems are among the most species-rich ecosystems outside the tropics. However, habitat loss and degradation have caused increased rarity of many obligate species. The lack of frequent surface fires and the proliferation of woody plants in the understory and midstory have greatly increased the risk of additional longleaf pine ecosystem losses from catastrophic fire. Because longleaf pine still exists in numerous small fragments throughout its range, it is reasonable to conclude that it can be restored. Restoration efforts now underway use physical, chemical, and pyric methods to reestablish the natural structure and function in these ecosystems by adjusting species composition, modifying stand structure, and facilitating ecological processes, such as periodic fire and longleaf pine regeneration. The ecological, economic, and social benefits of restoring longleaf pine ecosystems include (1) expanding the habitat available to aid in the recovery of numerous imperiled species, (2) improving habitat quality for many wildlife species, (3) producing greater amounts of high-quality longleaf pine timber products, (4) increasing the production of pine straw, (5) providing new recreational opportunities, (6) preserving natural and cultural legacies, and (7) creating a broader range of management options for future generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crops of bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) collected in 11 years in the longleaf-slash pine forest type were examined for food content. Seeds of woody plants made up 45% or more of the volume of food found in crops in 9 of the 11 winters. Seeds of pines, drupes of red bay, and acorns from various oaks were large-volume food items in certain years. As a group, seeds produced by legumes were the next largest in volume, varying from 2 to 48% in the 11 winters. Seeds of partridge peas, common lespedeza, bush clovers, milkpeas, and tick-clovers were important species. Volumes of seeds of grass, spurge, and sedge families were usually less than 12% for each group, and volumes of green leaves and animal matter less than 5% each. Panic and paspalums were principal grass species. Availability of seeds influenced consumption by forest-dwelling quail. In habitat management for quail, a variety of trees and shrubs should be maintained in the forest type to better insure a dependable food base, season to season and year to year. Similarly, desirable herbaceous food plants should be encouraged by fire and mechanical means.
