However in terms of plant science, there are many plants that secrete special chemical compounds from different parts to survive in adverse conditions. The compounds synthesized by plants were identified and now are used for therapeutic purposes in all the herbal industries. It is said that almost all the plants have medicinal properties and hence advised by all the health practitioners to consume all those fruits, vegetables, roots and herbs that are considered edible. These active ingredients synthesized by plants help them to get protected from predators for example animals, microorganisms, rodents, birds and rodents. Following this property, various growers have started the commercial cultivation of medicinal plants on a larger scale to generate profit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal Plants Trees and Shrubs of Appalachia I originally wrote this book to help me identify plants in the field, woods and along streams for medicine and a friend suggested that I offer it for sale to other folks to help them also. This is the result of that work. I have studied herbal medicine since 1999 and have taken many classes on herbal medicine throughout the country. I tend to lean more toward the traditional Native American way of healing since that is in my blood. To really learn about the plants you have to put in the dirt time, that means that you have to spend as much time as possible studying them and don't depend on one book, use many different ones as each one gives you a different perspective on each plant. Find teachers to teach you and learn as much as you can from each. My hope is that whoever purchases this book will learn that all weeds are not weeds and that some medicine can come from your own back yard. One instructor that I had on herbal medicine says that she believes that for whatever ailment that you have at the time that you will find the cure in your backyard and I have found that plants will change location from year to year. This book covers 105 medicinal plants with color photographs; with a space on the back of each page for notes. I have provided information on weights & measures, dosages, gathering and drying of herbs, type of preparations, herbal properties, plant terms, a list of symptoms and what herb to use for them, plant usage, location, when to harvest, parts to harvest, when to gather, and when it blooms by month.

Book excerpt: Alternative Medicine Review, March, 2006 by Mario RoxasThis text covers over 210 western plants within 100 distinct plant profiles, from Acacia to Yucca. Each profile is identified by what the author calls its "main common name." This is followed by the plant's Latin family name, its current Latin binomial, and any other common names. The profile is further broken down into segments such as description, distribution, chemistry, medicinal uses, indications, collection, preparation and dosage, and cautions.Kane's writing style is simple and easy to follow. Drawing from over 15 years of experience in the field, he equips the reader with practical information that can be readily applied, while at the same time lending insights that can only come from someone with a true passion for, and intimate knowledge of, botanical medicines.Herbal Medicine of the American Southwest serves as a decent field guide as well. In addition to the text, the book contains 80 detailed paintings by Frank S. Rose and over 250 photos of the plants covered in the book, allowing for easy recognition on site.Although the name focuses on plants in the southwest, many may be found throughout North America. Such familiar names include dandelion, horsetail, juniper, and verbena. Thus, the medicinal plants in this book go well beyond the geographical borders of its title. For anyone interested in botanical medicine, Herbal Medicine of the American Southwest is a valuable addition to your library.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the results from over a year of ethnobotanical research in a rural and an urban community in Jamaica, where we interviewed more than 100 people who use medicinal plants for healthcare. The goal of this research was to better understand patterns of medicinal plant knowledge, and to find out which plants are used in consensus by local people for a variety of illnesses. For this book, we selected 25 popular medicinal plant species mentioned during fieldwork. Through individual interviews, we were able to rank plants according to their frequency of mention, and categorized the medicinal uses for each species as “major” (mentioned by more than 20% of people in a community) or “minor” (mentioned by more than 5%, but less than 20% of people). Botanical identification of plant specimens collected in the wild allowed for cross-linking of common and scientific plant names. To supplement field research, we undertook a comprehensive search and review of the ethnobotanical and biomedical literature. Our book summarizes all this information in detail under specific sub-headings.
