Book excerpt: "What's love got to do with it? Everything, according to Richard Isay's informed and illuminating look at the role of romance in modern gay life. I highly recommend this book for people of any generation and partnership status." --Dean H. Hamer, Ph.D., author of The Science of Desire and The God Gene "Richard Isay offers something far better than simple bromides and false hope. In this book, he challenges us with a provocative, illuminating, and ultimately hopeful look at ourselves and explains how those of us who yearn to love and be loved (and who doesn't?) can best find happiness and healing in a committed relationship." --Eric Marcus, author of The Male Couple's Guide and Together Forever "Many gay men (and others, too) are likely to find this book exceptionally interesting and helpful. In a series of vividly illuminating case histories and with a psychoanalyst's depth and clarity of insight, Richard Isay lucidly explains why gay men have particular difficulty in establishing and sustaining loving relationships and how they might sensibly improve their chances of doing so." --Harry G. Frankfurt, Ph.D., author of On Bullshit and The Reasons of Love "Richard Isay's portrayals of gay men's lives are likely to be controversial. Isay is not the stereotypical psychoanalyst who sits quietly while his patients ramble--and we're all the better for that. He has something to say and what he says is worth hearing. This provocative book should be read by anyone who yearns for but hasn't yet found real love." --William Rubenstein, Founding Director of the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and former Director of the ACLU Lesbian & Gay Rights Project "Based on Dr. Isay's three decades of experience working with gay men in therapy, this is a deeply thoughtful study of the difficulties gay men may experience with falling and staying in love. For a gay man, reading this book may cause him to revisit some dark places along his own life's journey, but it will also give him a glimpse of the self-affirmation and capacity for change that are the goals of gay-positive psychotherapy." --Simon LeVay, Ph.D., author of Human Sexuality and Queer Science "Indispensable insights from America's wisest observer of gay relationships." --Charles Kaiser, author of The Gay Metropolis "Gay people seek the freedom to marry for the same mix of reasons as non-gay people, and for most, love and commitment are central. Drawing on his exceptional expertise and decades of stories from his patients, Richard Isay explores the challenges and value of romantic love--how to overcome our pasts and enrich our present lives at home--as we build a future of greater equality and inclusion in society." --Evan Wolfson, author of Why Marriage Matters

Book excerpt: By taking radical responsibility for your own healing, you unveil the high-conscious leader within that our world needs right now. You don’t outrun or outgrow the formative experiences that have shaped who you are. So, it makes sense that your emotional history would also be the foundation of your leadership style. If what got you to this point may now be the very thing that is holding you back, then Heal to Lead was written for you. Everything you’ve read about conscious leadership is based on self-awareness and personal growth, yet the missing link has been trauma healing. If you want greater collaboration with your people, the confidence to inspire growth in your organization, and a more meaningful connection to yourself, your community, and the natural world, it’s time to do the inner work. This book shows you how to develop high-conscious leadership, rooted in deep introspection, vulnerability, compassion, and reciprocity with all beings. Inside, former CEO turned trauma-informed leadership coach Kelly L. Campbell walks alongside you as you unpack and process what’s been buried within your psyche. Integrating your past trauma is the key to unlearning the maladaptive strategies that have kept you subconsciously safe until now. With the resources, personal anecdotes, and reflection questions in this book, you will be better able to regulate your emotions and feel more enlivened as you lead from a place of reclamation. As an indicator of your commitment, your organization will ultimately realize greater stability and success. Discover how trauma lives in the body and can hinder you from accessing your potential. Break strategic patterns in your life that keep you automated, and gain clarity about what you are here to contribute. Develop greater compassion for yourself and others so you can co-create healthy workplace culture and respond productively in difficult situations. Make a lasting, positive impact within your organization and augment your bottom line. Disrupt the default of extractive, patriarchal, and supremacist business practices. Commit to taking part in the restoration of our societal tapestry and global environment. Heal to Lead is a radical departure from the myths that emerging and established leaders like you have been fed for so long. By healing your core wounds, you shed other people’s stories about who you are, releasing the pain and scarcity mindset that keeps you feeling stuck. This liberation finally gives you access to your innate gifts as a leader, and you feel empowered to do the right thing by all as a generative force in the world.

Book excerpt: Work with your triggers to find peace in the painful moments and lasting emotional well-being. Psychotherapist David Richo examines the science of triggers and our reactions of fear, anger, and sadness. He helps us understand why our bodies respond before our minds have a chance to make sense of a situation. By looking deeply at the roots of what provokes us--the words, actions, and even sensory elements like smell--we find opportunities to understand the origins of our triggers and train our bodies to remain calm in the face of painful memories. The book offers in-the-moment exercises on how to process difficult emotions and physical manifestations in order to to cultivate the inner resources necessary to deal with recurring memories of trauma. When we are triggered, Richo writes, "we are being bullied by our own unfinished business." Explore what your body's knee-jerk reactions can teach you. Triggers: How We Can Stop Reacting and Start Healing acts as a guide to your body's powerful responses, helping you to remain calm under pressure and discover the key to emotional healing.

Book excerpt: Description of Healing RelationshipsThe focus of Doctor Yager's newest book "Healing Relationships" is the result of 30 years of helping couples resolve their relationship issue and determining a mutually agreed upon way forward in their relationship. It is a practical self-help guide both individual couples and as a useful tool for other therapists. Sometime the goal of healing a relationship is the save the relationship, sometimes to enhance the relationship, and sometimes to find ways to end the relationship with dignity and respect for the other. Regardless of the goal, this book offers a structured process for engaging and assisting couples in reaching resolutions, compromises and decisions about their relationship by guiding them through a series of logical steps. The objectives of the process are mutual understanding, clarity in communication, and objective consideration of information necessary for rational decisions. It is often true that couples seek counseling only after unsuccessful, frustrating attempts to resolve their problems without assistance, leaving them confused and angry. Objectivity is required and can be ruled out by emotion. This counseling protocol focuses on the future of the relationship. Doing so avoids regurgitation of earlier experiences except to achieve clarity and understanding of the problematic issues. In essence, six steps are involved:1. Identify the problematic issues, including those yet unknown and those that have not been recognized as being important.2. Clarify understanding of the issues by both partners, whether or not there is agreement about their content.3. Negotiate agreement on issues where the behavior of one or the other is the problem.4. Negotiate compromise where agreement about values is not possible. For future benefit, such compromise must be pragmatic in effect and acceptable to both sides without significant reservation.5. Where possible, engineer formal commitment from each partner - expressed to the other - to continue to maintain the agreed-upon issues. 6. Define the terms of the agreed-upon issues with clarity and commitment, preferably documenting them for future reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expert guide to resolving coworker conflicts and healing hurt feelings and resentments, to create a more productive—and pleasant—environment. Are you feeling less engaged, less committed, and more skeptical at work? Do you find yourself isolated? Or are you caught in the middle of co-workers’ interpersonal conflicts? If so, you may be experiencing the symptoms of broken trust in workplace relationships. Small but hurtful situations accumulate over time into the confidence-busting, commitment-breaking, energy-draining patterns consistent with broken trust. Everyone has experienced gossiping, missed deadlines, someone taking credit for other people’s work, or “little white lies.” You may have been hurt. You may have realized that you inadvertently let others down. Or you may be wondering how to help others reeling from broken trust. No matter your vantage point, this new book from two award-winning authors and consultants to top-tier organizations offers a proven seven-step process to heal pain and rebuild trust. This compassionate, practical approach helps you reframe the experience, take responsibility, forgive, let go, and move on. You can feel motivated to go to work again—and safe to be more fully who you are, giving your organization your best thinking, highest intention, risk-taking, and creativity. And in a place of self-discovery, self-trust, and authenticity, you can connect more fully with others in your personal life as well. While there have been many books on recovering from betrayal in personal relationships, this is the first to focus specifically on the workplace—and the first to give equal weight to what to do when you have hurt others. “Rebuilding trust is a job you cannot ignore if you want a thriving workplace. Don’t miss this book.” —John Kador, author of Effective Apology
