Book excerpt: This book aims at investigating from the perspective of the major economic dictionaries the notions of economic crisis and cycle. The project consists in giving an extensive summary of a number of significant entries on this subject, with an introductory essay to each entry placing them (and the dictionary to which they belong) in their context, giving some details on the author of the dictionary entry, and assessing the entry’s (and its author’s) contribution. The broad picture (including the history of these encyclopedic tools) will be examined in the introductory essays.

Lionberger analyzes the causes and effects of major economic crises of the 1800s, including the Panic of 1837 and the Panic of 1893. Using economic theory and historical data, Lionberger provides a lucid explanation of the boom-bust cycles that characterized the 19th century economy. COMMERCIAL CRISES OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. CHAPTER I. THE CRISIS OF 1815. The first important crisis of the nineteenth century occurred under quite exceptional circumstances, and although not entirely confined to Great Britain, this county was chiefly affected by it. This crisis of 1815 came immediately upon the conclusion of the peace on the downfall of Napoleon. It was generally believed that immediately after the signature of the treaty of peace at Paris a period of great commercial prosperity would begin, and that England in particular would reap the fruits of her supremacy at sea and of the great development of her internal resources which had taken place during the war. Such exertions had never before been made, nor such expenditure incurred, by any nation. The weight of taxation was crushing during the war, the drain for men and material was unprecedented on so small a population, and so great was the stringency in the precious metals that the Bank of England had suspended specie payments since 1797. In 1756 the funded debt of the United Kingdom was little more than 72,000,000, in 1815 it was 800,000,000. The public expenditure in 1814 was no less than 106,832,260, in 1815 it was 92,000,000, and two years later only 55,000,000. Tens of thousands of men were then set free from the useless services of war to devote themselves to increasing the wealth of the country; the markets of the Continent, long nominally, at least, closed to English goods, were thrown open; and a fine harvest at home helped on, as it was thought, the general improvement due to the beneficial change in foreign affairs. Precisely the contrary, however, of that which was expected took place. Great Britain had been enabled to hold...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Crises In a series of essays I have attempted to explain various interesting aspects of economic problems which are apt to be ignored. All of them involved nearly identical considerations, and as each was intended to be complete in itself, repetition was inevitable. In former essays I discussed the meaning of Business, the Meaning of Property, and Inflation and Prosperity. This essay is an attempt to show why crises are inevitable wherever business is conducted with borrowed money. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Market Madness, Dr. Blake Clayton, a Wall Street stock analyst and former Oxford researcher, draws on a century's worth of statistical data to offer a revolutionary new look the history of oil and future of energy. The culmination of a multi-year study, he shows how generational fears about an imminent, irreversible shortage of oil punctuate the history of oil since its earliest days. He explores the conditions in which oil supply fears arise, gain popularity, and eventually wane, and shows how important such stories can be in affecting financial markets. He links these episodes to the behavioral concept of irrational exuberance and new era economic thinking, first popularized by Nobel Laureate Yale economist Robert Shiller, to show how unfounded pessimism affects the market for oil and other exhaustible resources. Acknowledging the significant geological and structural changes the oil market has undergone over the last century, the book does not dismiss today's shortage fears out of hand, but asks what they reveal about how commodity markets function and what that means for investors and public officials. Clayton argues that the lessons to be learned from this history are the need for quality data about US and global oil reserves, the importance of clear communication from public officials about energy markets and resources, and the value of transparency in commodities markets. While these measures will not eliminate volatility and unpredictability in energy markets, he writes, they would mitigateunnecessary price spikes and improve investor and government decision-making. The book addresses popular debates in economics and finance on how mass beliefs affect financial markets while also offering a colorful narrative history for general readers about the dramatic booms and busts of the American oil industry"--
