Better access to market outlets and stable prices are considered key principles for sustainable poverty reduction and stakeholder participation based on 'trade, not aid'. While Fair Trade is primarily conceived as a trading partnership - based on dialogue, transparency and mutual respect - seeking greater equity in international trade, it relies on an organized social movement promoting standards for production practices and delivery procedures, working conditions and labour remuneration, environmental care and social policies in supply chains of certified tropical goods. Over the past two decades, sales of Fair Trade products have considerably increased. Global Fair Trade sales have steadily grown to approximately EUR 1.6 billion worldwide, covering almost 600 producer organizations in more than 55 developing countries that represent close to a million families of farmers and workers. In recent years, efforts have been made towards mainstreaming of Fair Trade involving large international companies and retail chains. While numerous case studies and descriptive overviews are available to illustrate the importance of Fair Trade for producers and their families in developing countries, little quantitative evidence has been presented to review the socio-economic impact of Fair Trade. This collection of articles provides the first balanced in-depth analysis of the real welfare impact of Fair Trade, paying attention to key dimensions of income, consumption, wealth, environment, empowerment and gender. International trade has grown dramatically in the last two decades in the global economy, and trade is an important source of revenue in developing countries. Yet, many low-income countries have been producing and exporting tropical commodities for a long time. They are still poor. This book is a major analytical contribution to understanding commodity production and trade, as well as putting forward policy-relevant suggestions for ‘solving’ the commodity problem. Through the study of the global value chain for coffee, the authors recast the ‘development problem’ for countries relying on commodity exports in entirely new ways. They do so by analysing the so-called coffee paradox – the coexistence of a ‘coffee boom’ in consuming countries and of a ‘coffee crisis’ in producing countries. New consumption patterns have emerged with the growing importance of specialty, fair trade and other ‘sustainable’ coffees. In consuming countries, coffee has become a fashionable drink and coffee bar chains have expanded rapidly. At the same time, international coffee prices have fallen dramatically and producers receive the lowest prices in decades. This book shows that the coffee paradox exists because what farmers sell and what consumers buy are becoming increasingly ‘different’ coffees. It is not material quality that contemporary coffee consumers pay for, but mostly symbolic quality and in-person services. As long as coffee farmers and their organizations do not control at least parts of this ‘immaterial’ production, they will keep receiving low prices. The Coffee Paradox seeks ways out from this situation by addressing some key questions: What kinds of quality attributes are combined in a coffee cup or coffee package? Who is producing these attributes? How can part of these attributes be produced by developing country farmers? To what extent are specialty and sustainable coffees achieving these objectives?

Cette recherche porte sur les contributions et limites du commerce équitable au développement durable en s'intéressant plus spécifiquement à l'équité du commerce équitable de même qu'au modèle de développement qu'il propose pour les organisations de producteurs du Sud. Considérant l'ampleur de notre objet de recherche, nous avons privilégié une approche de recherche qualitative. Nous appréhendons notre objet de recherche sur deux fronts: celui de la formalisation des principes qui s'appuie sur une analyse documentaire et celui de leur opérationnalisation qui s'appuie à la fois sur le cas d'une fédération de producteurs de café au Chiapas et l'analyse des représentations sociales des producteurs, des employés de l'organisation et des certificateurs. Notre recherche se distingue donc d'une étude d'impacts puisque nous avons cherché à voir la place qu'occupe le développement durable et ses dimensions pour le projet de commerce équitable à l'étude. Si d'un point de vue théorique, l'équité occupe une place centrale pour le mouvement du commerce équitable, dans la pratique, notre recherche montre qu'elle est loin de consister un objectif, un moyen ou même une condition: tout au plus constitue-t-elle une aspiration future, voire une illusion ou une utopie. Nous avons mis en lumière plusieurs problèmes d'équité liés à la géométrie variable de ce système qui est plus exigeant pour les producteurs du Sud qu'il ne l'est pour les acteurs du Nord, à sa gouvernance qui favorise la représentation des acteurs du Nord, même si cette situation tend à changer, et à son insuccès à mettre en place un commerce où il y aurait un partage effectivement plus équitable de la valeur entre les acteurs du Sud et du Nor.
