Download or read book Nuclear Fusion written by C.M. Braams and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusion research started over half a century ago. Although the task remains unfinished, the end of the road could be in sight if society makes the right decisions. Nuclear Fusion: Half a Century of Magnetic Confinement Fusion Research is a careful, scholarly account of the course of fusion energy research over the past fifty years. The authors outline the different paths followed by fusion research from initial ignorance to present understanding. They explore why a particular scheme would not work and why it was more profitable to concentrate on the mainstream tokamak development. The book features descriptive sections, in-depth explanations of certain physical and technical issues, scientific terms, and an extensive glossary that explains relevant abbreviations and acronyms.

Download or read book Cathodic Arcs written by André Anders and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic arcs are among the longest studied yet least understood objects in science. Plasma-generating, tiny spots appear on the cathode; they are highly dynamic and hard to control. With an approach emphasizing the fractal character of cathode spots, strongly fluctuating plasma properties are described such as the presence of multiply charged ions that move with supersonic velocity. Richly illustrated, the book also deals with practical issues, such as arc source construction, macroparticle removal, and the synthesis of dense, well adherent coatings. The book spans a bridge from plasma physics to coatings technology based on energetic condensation, appealing to scientists, practitioners and graduate students alike.

Book Synopsis Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics by : Kenro Miyamoto
Download or read book Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics written by Kenro Miyamoto and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-10-23 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resulting from ongoing, international research into fusion processes, the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER) is a major step in the quest for a new energy source. The first graduate-level text to cover the details of ITER, Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics introduces various aspects and issues of recent fusion research activities through the shortest access path. The distinguished author breaks down the topic by first dealing with fusion and then concentrating on the more complex subject of plasma physics. The book begins with the basics of controlled fusion research, followed by discussions on tokamaks, reversed field pinch (RFP), stellarators, and mirrors. The text then explores ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities, resistive instabilities, neoclassical tearing mode, resistive wall mode, the Boltzmann equation, the Vlasov equation, and Landau damping. After covering dielectric tensors of cold and hot plasmas, the author discusses the physical mechanisms of wave heating and noninductive current drive. The book concludes with an examination of the challenging issues of plasma transport by turbulence, such as magnetic fluctuation and zonal flow. Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics clearly and thoroughly promotes intuitive understanding of the developments of the principal fusion programs and the relevant fundamental and advanced plasma physics associated with each program.

Book Synopsis Transport and Structural Formation in Plasmas, by : Kimitaka Itoh
Download or read book Transport and Structural Formation in Plasmas, written by Kimitaka Itoh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph, the latest in the IOP Plasma Physics Series, written by three of the most senior and internationally respected Japanese fusion scientists, presents a self-consistent picture of turbulent transport, structural formation and transitions-processes that are typical of the physics of many far from equilibrium systems such as exist in magnetically confined and inhomogeneous plasmas. The Author's view is that the plasma structure, fluctuations and turbulent transport are continually regulating each other and, in addition, that the structural formation and structural transition of plasmas are typical of the physics of far from equilibrium systems. The book presents and explains why the plasma inhomogeneity is the ordering parameter governing transport and how self-sustained fluctuations can be driven through subcritical excitation even beyond linear stability. In addition, the authors derive the non-linear gradient-flux relation with the result that asymmetry arising from the fluctuations allows mixing of the various kinds of fluxes. This emphasises the ever important role that electromagnetic fields play in inducing long range interactions, couplings and bifurcations in plasmas. To illustrate, a transport simulation of a high temperature current fusion experiment like JET-the Joint European Torus-helps us to understand various structural formations such as the H-mode. With the insight that structural formation in high temperature plasmas is fundamental to an accurate description of the basic phenomena that occur in our present cosmos, the authors provide a comprehensive account of the subject to help fusion researchers, fluid dynamicists and astrophysicists alike. The book addresses a key to understanding the age old question of what has occurred in the early stage of the our universe and what is likely to occur in the final stage of our universe.
Book Synopsis Theory Of Toroidally Confined Plasmas, The (Third Edition) by : Roscoe B White
Download or read book Theory Of Toroidally Confined Plasmas, The (Third Edition) written by Roscoe B White and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate level textbook develops the theory of magnetically confined plasma, with the aim of bringing the reader to the level of current research in the field of thermonuclear fusion. It begins with the basic concepts of magnetic field description, plasma equilibria and stability, and goes on to derive the equations for guiding center particle motion in an equilibrium field. Topics include linear and nonlinear ideal and resistive modes and particle transport. It is of use to workers in the field of fusion both for its wide-ranging account of tokamak physics and as a kind of handbook or formulary. This edition has been extended in a number of ways. The material on mode-particle interactions has been reformulated and much new information added, including methodology for Monte Carlo implementation of mode destabilization. These results give explicit means of carrying out mode destabilization analysis, in particular for the dangerous fishbone mode. A new chapter on cyclotron motion in toroidal geometry has been added, with comparisons of the analysis of resonances using guiding center results. A new chapter on the use of lithium lined walls has been added, a promising means of lowering the complexity and cost of full scale fusion reactors. A section on nonlocal transport has been added, including an analysis of Levy flight simulations of ion transport in the reversed field pinch in Padova, RFX.
