Book Synopsis The Harmony Of The Gospels by : St. Augustine of Hippo
Download or read book The Harmony Of The Gospels written by St. Augustine of Hippo and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life Book I. The treatise opens with a short statement on the subject of the authority of the Evangelists, their number, their order, and the different plans of their narratives. Augustine then prepares for the discussion of the questions relating to their harmony, by joining issue in this book with those who raise a difficulty in the circumstance that Christ has left no writing of His own, or who falsely allege that certain books were composed by Him on the arts of magic. He also meets the objections of those who, in opposition to the evangelical teaching, assert that the disciples of Christ at once ascribe more to their Master than He really was, when they affirmed that He was God, and inculcated what they had not been instructed in by Him, when they interdicted the worship of the gods. Against these antagonists he vindicates the teaching of the Apostles, by appealing to the utterances of the Prophets, and by showing that the God of Israel was to be the sole object of worship, who also, although He was the only Deity to whom acceptance was denied in former times by the Romans, and that for the very reason that He prohibited them from worshipping other gods along with Himself, has now in the end made the Empire of Rome subject to His Name, and among all nations has broken their idols in pieces through the preaching of the Gospel, as He had promised by His prophets that the event should be. Book II. In this book Augustine undertakes an orderly examination of the Gospel according to Matthew, on to the narrative of the Supper, and institutes a comparison between it and the other Gospels by Mark, Luke, and John, with the view of demonstrating a complete harmony between the four Evangelists throughout all these sections. Book III. This book contains a demonstration of the harmony of the Evangelists from the accounts of the Supper on to the end of the Gospel, the narratives given by the several writers being collated, and the whole arranged in one orderly connection. Book IV. This book embraces a discussion of those passages which are peculiar to Mark, Luke, or John.

Download or read book The Single Gospel written by Neil Averitt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Jesus is at the heart of the Christian faith, and is one of the great works of Western literature. This book presents the story in a new form, more accessible than ever before. It weaves the four separate gospel accounts into one continuous story. And it presents the story in a new translation: traditional, but clear. Here the reader can find the episodes laid out in an understandable narrative sequence. The nativity at Bethlehem is followed by the visit of the wise men. And for each scene the rich details are collected from all the gospel accounts, giving a complete picture of complex events like the Sermon on the Mount or Jesus' climactic encounter with Pilate. The new language is clear as well. It is traditional scripture inconspicuously updated for modern readers, supplemented with contemporary language for difficult concepts, and using the grand and familiar language of the King James where appropriate. Low-key explanations fill in the details. Short footnotes explain the key concepts, and longer endnotes provide additional depth. This book opens the gospels to everyone--Christians who want to better understand their faith, and general readers who want to rediscover a great work of literature.

Book Synopsis The Sign of the Gospel by : W. Travis McMaken
Download or read book The Sign of the Gospel written by W. Travis McMaken and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theology of the sacraments is one of the most contested parts in Barth's theology, none more so than the doctrine of baptism. Barth's proposals on baptism have generated intense conversation and disagreement, not only on its application to Protestant and ecumenical theology but even on its own consistency with Barth's larger dogmatic project. McMaken takes up this controversial question, sets it in its proper context within the history of doctrine and Barth's systematic work, and argues for a constructive reclamation of infant baptism that accords with Barth's overarching theological concerns and insights, notably from Barth's mature theological commitments. Pivotally, this volume claims that a reorientation of the doctrine of baptism opens up a new perspective on the practice of infant baptism on the basis of Barth's theology; this new perspective, as well, holds the potential for wide, ecumenical application as a form of the proclamation of the gospel and a vital dimension of the church's missional vocation. A commanding volume for scholars and students in systematic theology, ecumenical studies, and sacramental theology.
Download or read book Union with God written by Audy Santoso and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2021-08-09 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If salvation makes a person to become God, then how do we understand the word 'God'? Audy Santoso assesses Robert Jenson's notion of deification on three main areas: the concept of God, Christ, and self along with their ramifications. In this comparative study, Jenson's revisionary metaphysics in his theology opens up an insightful perspective in reading John Calvin's theology. Discussion on the Supper shows the intricate relation of what these theologians hope for with the practice of our lives in God. The author makes a comparative assessment and integration between the seemingly opposite metaphysics of Jenson and Calvin while keeping the Creator-creature distinction of Reformed theology intact. Jenson says that the end is music, but the author affirms a better way without negating Jenson's.

Book excerpt: The earliest of the four Gospels, the book portrays Jesus as an enigmatic figure, struggling with enemies, his inner and external demons, and with his devoted but disconcerted disciples. Unlike other gospels, his parables are obscure, to be explained secretly to his followers. With an introduction by Nick Cave
