Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Psalms, Vol. 1 It is justly remarked, however, by Koester, that the suppo sitiou in question by no means requires us to hold that the Psalm is a late production, and probably composed by the col lector himself. The simplicity and freshness which characterize it are against this. That it must have been composed, at any rate, before Jeremiah, is evident from his imitation of it. A more determinate conclusion regarding the time of its composi tion, can only, since the Psalm itself furnishes no data, be de rived from ascertaining its relation to Psalm second. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 1 Another excellence of this commentary is its practical character. The author does not confine himself to the dry and lifeless detail of mere grammatical praxis, as if he had been commenting on a Greek or Roman classic. He turns all his explanations to practical account, and thus his work exhibits a happy combination of critical and philological remark with practical exposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Commentary on the Psalms, Vol. 1 Hitzig's new Commentary has been of the greatest serv1ce to me in the revision and re-working of my own. In it I found mine uniformly taken into account from beginning to end, either with or without direct mention, and subjected to severe but kindly-disposed criticism; and here and there not without a ready recognition of the scientific advance which could not but be observed in it. In comparison with such an unmerciful judgment as that which Hupfeld pronounced upon me, and which Ewald a few years later with very Similar language pro nounced upon him, I here met with reasonable criticism of the matter, and, notwithstanding the full consciousness of the thoroughly original inquirer, an appreciation of the toil be stowed by others upon their work. I have tried to conform to that requirement, and have therefore found it necessary to leave questions of date and authorship all but untouched. They could not be adequately discussed in conjunction with Exposition. I venture to think that the deepest and most precious elements in the Psalms are very slightly affected by the answers to these questions, and that expository treat ment of the bulk of the Psalter may be separated from critical, Without condemning the former to incomplete ness. If I have erred in thus restricting the scope ot this volume, I have done so after due consideration; and am not Without hope that the restriction may com mend itself to some readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Commentary on the Book of Psalms, (the Prayer-Book Version, ) Chiefly Founded on the Fathers, Vol. 2: Containing Psalms 73-150 Iris, of course, clear that the meaning which all who read the Psalms, as well as other portions of Holy Scriptures, have first to look to, is that of the words taken in their plain and literal sense. We certainly can make no great progress in the study of God's Word until we have understood its Literal meaning. In the historical books this is generally very plain; but in the poetical and prophetical por tions of the Bible it is much more difficult to dis cover it, because the writers intended that it should be so. It was one of the great points of ancient learning, as it is of modem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Psalms, Vol. 1: A New Translation With Introductions and Notes, Explanatory and Critical The Second Edition of this work will not be found to differ very materially from the First. I have made a few additions, more particularly to the Critical Notes in some of the earlier Psalms; and I have corrected errors wherever I have discovered them, or where they have been pointed out to me by friends. All the references have been carefully revised. Many of the apparent mistakes in the references of the First Edition were due to my having used the Hebrew Bible, without taking due care to mark where the Hebrew division of chapters or verses varied from the English. Where these differ, it will now be found, I hope, that both references are given, those to the Hebrew text being enclosed in square brackets. If, however, the double reference has still been omitted in some cases, it may be borne in mind that in all Psalms which have an inscription, the inscription is reckoned as a verse (occasionally as two verses) in the Hebrew text, whereas this is not the case in the English. Consequently the first verse in the English may be the second or even the third in the Hebrew, and so on all through. In the Critical Notes the references are always to the Hebrew text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expositions on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 1 of 6: Translated, With Notes and Indices His mystical and allegorical interpretation, in spite of occasional mistakes, which belong rather to the translation than to himself, will be found in general of great value. It is to a considerable extent systematic, and the same inter pretation of the' same symbols is repeated throughout the' work, and is indeed often common to him with other Fathers. The feet' taken for the affections, clouds' for the Apostles, and many other instances, are of very frequent occurrence. And it is evident that a few such general inter pretations must be a great help to those who wish to make an allegorical use of those portions of Holy Scripture, which are adapted for it. Nor are they adhered to with such strictness as to deprive the reader of the benefit of other explanations, where it appears that some other metaphor or allegory was intended. Both St. Augustine and St. Gregory acknowledge, and at times impress on their readers, that metaphorical language is used in Holy Scripture with various meanings under the same symbol. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Psalms, Vol. 3 The Psalmist prays for help on behalf of the oppressed church, particularly on behalf of Joseph and Benjamin, ver. 1 - 3, and describes, in mournful language, their oppression in ver. 4-7. In ver. 8 - 13, Israel appears under the image of a vine tree, which at first is carefully attended to, and had spread forth luxuriantly, but now 'had become altogether destroyed. In ver. 14 - 19, the Psalmist prays that God would again take this vine tree under his gracious protection. Ver. 1-7 are evidently to be considered as an Introduction; and the individual character of the Psalm is to be found in the figure of the vine tree. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While St. John Chrysostom may have commented on all 150 psalms in the Psalter, commentary has survived on only fifty-eight. In these volumes, Robert Charles Hill has prepared an excellent translation of the commentary - in Volume One Psalms 4-13, 44-50, and in Volume Two Psalms 109-150 (with the exception of the long Ps 119) - all appearing for the first time in English. In this work, probably composed while he was still in Antioch, Chrysostom's brilliance as an exegete of the "literal school" of Antioch shines forth, even as he works with the metaphorical language and imagery of the psalms. As Hill writes, "it is fascinating to watch Chrysostom . . . coming to grips with this lyrical material, achieving some sense of comfort, and eventually devising - for the first time? - his own hermeneutical principles for coping with such texts." The extensive Introduction in Volume One covers basic issues on the commentary, including its origins, its relationship to Chrysostom's other exegetical work, his attitude to Scripture, and the theology, spirituality and other moral accents of the commentary. Comment on Chrysostom's text is also given in endnotes, and indexes are provided in each volume. -- ‡c From publisher's description
