Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Book of the Prophet Daniel, Vol. 2 He repeats again, He saw in his vision during the night. Again, I say, Daniel affirms that he brought forward nothing but what God had authoritatively delivered to him. For we know that in the Church all human traditions ought to be treated as worthless, since all men's wisdom is vanity and lies. As God alone deserves to be listened to by the faith ful, so Daniel here asserts that he offers nothing of his own by dreaming in the ordinary way, but that the vision is sure, and such as cannot deceive the pious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Book of the Prophet Daniel, Vol. 1 Professor hencsteneerc6 of Berlin has ably refuted the Neologian objections of his predecessors: the American reader will find the subject ably treated in the Biblical Re pertory of Philadelphia 7 and the English student may oh tain an abstract of the points in dispute from the elaborate Introduction of Hartwell horne.8 The various theories of these Neologists imply that the Book was written during the Maccabaean period, by one or more authors who invented the earlier portions by mingling fable with history in inex tricable confusion, and by throwing around the history of their own age the garb of prephetic romance The reception of any such hypothesis would so completely nullify the whole of calvin's Exposition, that we feel absolved from the neces sity of entering into details. No disciple of this school will even condescend to peruse these lectures. It is enough for us to know, that these unworthy successors of the early German Reformers have been met with ability and research by luderwald, staudlin, jahn, lack, and steudel. The unbelief of a semler, a michaelis, and a corrodi, will seem to the follower of calvin the offspring of an unsanctified reason which has never been trained in reverential homage to the inspired Word. The keenness of this perverse criti cism has attempted to explain away two important facts; first, that ezekiel mentions daniel as alive in his day, and as a model of piety and wisdom, (ch. Xiv. 20, and ch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Voices From Babylon: Or the Records of Daniel the Prophet The treatment Of these sacred Voices in the follow ing Lectures is but little in the vein of most of the commentaries and treatises on the subject. Whilst the best and worst of modern criticism and exegesis on Daniel have been consulted, and much of real worth has thus been found and appropriated, the pur pose has rather been to restate the contents of the Book in the direct import Of its own terms, and thus to revive and vindicate the Older and truer conceptions of the Church with regard to these magnificent prophecies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophet Daniel: A Key to the Visions and Prophecies of the Book of Daniel The Book of Daniel with its great prophecies, both fulfilled and unfulfilled, is one of the most interesting portions of God's Holy Word. Before we follow this blessed book in a series of studies a few general remarks on Prophecy and its importance may be in order. Prophecy is history prewritten. The center of all Prophecy and the goal as well is the Lord Jesus Christ. His sufferings and His Glory, His two Comings, as Man of Sorrows to suffer and to die, as King of Glory to reign were beheld and written in advance by the holy men of God through the power of God's Spirit. The entire history of the chosen people Israel is written in the prophetic Word. All their sufferings and wanderings, what has befallen them in the past; their present lot, scattered among all the nations of the earth; what is yet to come upon them in tribulation and judgment, as well as blessing and peace, are found prewritten in the Bible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Later Visions of Daniel: Historically Explained Since my former work, a volume' has appeared, by a noble and learned author, whom I have the privilege to know, on the Times of the prophet Daniel. With a very deep personal regard for that noble author, whose studies are a bright contrast to the follies which occupy too many of our peers, I am compelled to differ entirely from his views. I had prepared a chapter on the sub jcet for the present work but as it seemed rather foreign to the scope of the volume, I have suppressed it at present. But I feel it right to observe that I have examined closely the two difficulties, which alone give a seeming strength to his Grace's theory, - the succession of names in the Persian history, and the two covenants under Zerubbabel and N ehemiah, -and feel confident that I can meet them both with a full and complete answer'. It seems to me surprising that the paradox of two Scripture Nebuchadnezzars, and a Scripture Cyrus, totally unknown to profane history, in the reign of Longimanus, contemporary with Cimon and Pericles, can ever be received by any mind, accustomed to pay the least regard to the laws of evidence. Every fresh inquiry has only increased my confidence in the usual chronology, derived from the Canon of Ptolemy, and its truth, I believe, may be almost entirely established even by Scripture evidence alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Daniel: Theologically and Homiletically Expounded The peculiar literary traits and theological contents of this book, especially in its second or pi'ophetical part, likewise find their explanation in its origin among the scenes of the cap tivity. The prophecies of Daniel, conveyed generally in the form of dreams and visions, and nowhere enforced by inspired addresses or exhortations, and concerning themselves chiefly, ii not exclusively. With the fate of the all - controlling worlcl-power, on the one hand, and, on the other, with the final triumph of the Messianic kingdom of God, are thus distinguished from the earlier prophetical writings by peculiarities which mark the book as the pattern for the so called apocalyptic prophecies. In ordinary prophecies the people of God had usually occupied the foreground of vision, while the world-powers by which they were threatened, were only noticed incidentally, and made the objects of burdens or threatening prophecies, as iso lated representatives of the spirit that opposes God. Daniel on the contrary, takes his posi tion in the heart of that world-power, which had overthrown and subjugated all the nations of the East, and among them the chosen race. From this point of vision he foretells the rise of a new world-kingdom, which shall destroy the present empire, to be followed, in turn, by another and still greater power, and so on to the end, when an eternal kingdom of truth and righteousness shall be established on their ruins, by the direct interference of the God of heaven. The result of all earthly development, and the succession of judgments visited on the enemies of God's people, closing with the Messianic or general judgment, form the subject of this pro phecy; and the grandeur of its field of vision, compassing all history and embracing the world, together with the visional clothing of its teaching and the profound symbolism of its eschatological descriptions, constitute the features which stamp it as an apocalypse, in distinc tion from all earlier prophecy. Within the Old Testament, this form of prophetical writing is approached by the closing chapters of Ezekiel (xl. But it is directly represented only in the former half of Zechariah (chap. I. Where the model found in Daniel was probably copied. In the New Testament it is found, if we except certain brief sections in the Gospels and Pauline epistles (the eschatological discourse in Matt. Xxiv., mm, and parallel pas sages, and 2 Thess. 1l), only in the Revelation of St. John, which is a direct copy and con tinuation of the prophecies of Daniel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary on the Biblical Book of Daniel answers crucial questions about the significance of his prophecy, and of the culture he lived among. Not content with simply interpreting the prophecy of Daniel, Robert Dick Wilson delves into the social, historical and cultural aspects of ancient Babylonia. The significance of Nebuchadnezzar II in the story of Daniel, how his dreams were interpreted to become some of the most significant aspects of Old Testament prophecy, is discussed. Other chapters focus on the Chaldeans and their society, the opposition that Babylon had to Israel - Daniel himself being a captive Hebrew man, taken from his homeland as a child - and the possibility that Nebuchadnezzar was mentally ill. The allusions to the events at the King's court in the Book of Daniel are examined in detail, with conclusions drawn to the most reasonable extent possible.
