L'auteur tente d’exposer, dans leur aspect réel et avec l’impartialité d’un historien, les phénomènes de la révolution russe et ceux qui l’avaient préparée. Les conclusions auxquelles il parvient ne permettent pas d’adopter la doctrine officielle sur le caractère « mondial » de la révolution de 1917. Comme toutes les révolutions, elle est née d’un ensemble de conditions créées par le passé du peuple russe. Phénomène singulier et extraordinaire, elle ne peut s’expliquer que par les particularités de l’évolution politique et sociale de ce peuple et par les antécédents de son éducation séculaire. C’est l’histoire russe qui continue pendant les années révolutionnaires. Le peuple russe a pu, au cours de son existence, former un grand État et le doter d’un pouvoir énorme. Mais ses destinées historiques ne lui ont pas permis de faire naître le citoyen et de créer une charpente sociale forte et résistante. C’est le sujet, non le citoyen, qui a fait la révolution russe.
