Book excerpt: We address through this thesis asymptotic output tracking based on nonlinear continuous-time generalized predictive control (NCGPC). Some specific assumptions are necessary for the application of this control design method. NCGPC has two parameters that are the relative degree and the prediction horizon time which are, respectively, intrinsic and extrinsic to the nonlinear system. Its control law is derived from the minimization of a quadratic criterion based on the prediction error (up to an order equal to the relative degree) between the chosen output(s) and their corresponding reference signal(s). This control law leads to a linear closedloop system with a guaranteed stability for a relative degree less than or equal to four. Beyond four, instability occurs. To avoid this issue, Chen et al. introduce as a third parameter the order r of the successive derivatives of the control with respect to time, chosen so that its difference in relation to the relative degree must be less than four. We propose, in this work, two approaches verifying the above assumptions, having in common the modification of the criterion while keeping parameter r equal to zero with guaranteed closed-loop stability (for a relative degree greater than four). The first approach consists in adding a linear term with respect to the control to the criterion while the second consists in adding to the prediction matrix of the criterion an "intelligent" matrix of correction (it vanishes when correction is not necessary). Important properties are presented for SISO nonlinear systems of relative degree one or two.
