Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented here is an implicit model following design technique, based on linear optimal control, that is particularly effective for complicated flight control situations with many controls and with difficult design specifications. The procedure involves defining the quadratic performance index to be minimized in such a way that precludes on-board generation of desired handling quality model dynamics. This complex performance index, which in general will contain cross coupled state and control variables, yields feedback and feedforward control gain solutions which implicitly force the actual system to follow the desired response. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early machines to today's sophisticated aircraft, stability and control have always been crucial considerations. In this second edition, Abzug and Larrabee again forge through the history of aviation technologies to present an informal history of the personalities and the events, the art and the science of airplane stability and control. The book includes never-before-available impressions of those active in the field, from pre-Wright brothers airplane and glider builders through to contemporary aircraft designers. Arranged thematically, the book deals with early developments, research centers, the effects of power on stability and control, the discovery of inertial coupling, the challenge of stealth aerodynamics, a look toward the future, and much more. It is profusely illustrated with photographs and figures, and includes brief biographies of noted stability and control figures along with a core bibliography. Professionals, students, and aviation enthusiasts alike will appreciate this readable history of airplane stability and control.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to focus on the use of nonlinear analysis and synthesis techniques for aircraft control. It is also the first book to address in detail closed-loop control problems for aircraft "on-ground" – i.e. speed and directional control of aircraft before take-off and after touch down. The book will be of interest to engineers, researchers, and students in control engineering, and especially aircraft control.

Book excerpt: Tactical aircraft with STOL capability exhibit undesirable coupled response during the landing phase of flight. A simplified method for designing a stability augmentation system which eliminates the coupling effects is demonstrated. The method is based on Gilbert's decoupling theory which utilizes a feedback control law to obtain a set of single input, single output subsystems. The augmentation system can be designed to provide either command rate or command angle authority in the three rotational axes. Analyses is facilitated through the use of two computer programs, the first of which determines the class of control laws which will decouple a system. The second computer program determines, through transient response analysis, the values of the transfer function parameters required to satisfy response criteria. The results of a piloted simulation which analyzed several decoupled configurations is also presented. (Author).

Bordignon, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA Roger Beck, Dynamic Concepts, Inc., USA An authoritative work on aircraft control allocation by its pioneers Aircraft Control Allocation addresses the problem of allocating supposed redundant flight controls. It provides introductory material on flight dynamics and control to provide the context, and then describes in detail the geometry of the problem. The book includes a large section on solution methods, including 'Banks' method', a previously unpublished procedure. Generalized inverses are also discussed at length. There is an introductory section on linear programming solutions, as well as an extensive and comprehensive appendix dedicated to linear programming formulations and solutions. Discrete-time, or frame-wise allocation, is presented, including rate-limiting, nonlinear data, and preferred solutions. Key features: Written by pioneers in the field of control allocation. Comprehensive explanation and discussion of the major control allocation solution methods. Extensive treatment of linear programming solutions to control allocation. A companion web site contains the code of a MATLAB/Simulink flight simulation with modules that incorporate all of the major solution methods. Includes examples based on actual aircraft. The book is a vital reference for researchers and practitioners working in aircraft control, as well as graduate students in aerospace engineering.
