Book Synopsis Family and Kinship in East London by : Michael Young
Download or read book Family and Kinship in East London written by Michael Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1957 ,and reprinted with a new introduction in 1986, Michael Young and Peter Willmott’s book on family and kinship in Bethnal Green in the 1950s is a classic in urban studies. A standard text in planning, housing, family studies and sociology, it predicted the failure in social terms of the great rehousing campaign which was getting under way in the 1950s. The tall flats built to replace the old ‘slum’ houses were unpopular. Social networks were broken up. The book had an immediate impact when it appeared – extracts were published in the newspapers, the sales were a record for a report of a sociological study, Government ministers quoted it. But the approach it advocated was not accepted until the late 1960s, and by then it was too late. This Routledge Revivals reissue includes the authors' introduction from the 1986 reissue, reviewing the impact of the book and its ideas thirty years on. They argue that if the lessons implicit in the book had been learned in the 1950s, London and other British cities might not have suffered the 'anomie' and violence manifested in the urban riots of the 1980s.

Lady Catherine, banished to the countryside as a useless girl with a lame leg, got her revenge by playing a dangerous game...and now it will ruin her. When the old earl dies, his only child feels no sorrow. The earldom will now revert to the crown and Lady Catherine will continue to live life exactly as she pleases. But when she learns that she is the heir to a secret family title, everything changes. Marriage had once seemed unnecessary and out of the question; now it is the only thing she wants. The two men in her life both need her influence and wealth. Whom shall she choose? The kind but secretive Captain Avebury? Or the notorious Sir Lyle, the handsome smuggler? Both men deal very differently with honor. And when Catherine’s secret self-destructs, which man can be trusted to save her? The Portrait is about a strong woman, foolish decisions, trust, and the definition of honor. Fans of Jane Austen’s independent women will recognize in Catherine a voice which will not be silenced.
Book Synopsis Sexual Divisions and Society by : Sheila Allen
Download or read book Sexual Divisions and Society written by Sheila Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976, Sexual Divisions and Society argues that mainstream sociology has neglected to incorporate the notion of sexual divisions as an integral part of its theoretical underpinnings. It suggests that sociology has often included women completely within the term of ‘men’, or as a part of their husbands, rather than asking how and when the relationship between the sexes is pertinent to the explanation of social structure and behaviour. The volume is composed of papers brought together from the 1974 British Sociological Association Conference on Sexual Divisions.

Each society characterizes and, consequently, treats death and dying in its own individual ways—ways that differ markedly. These particular patterns of death and dying engender modal cultural responses, and such institutionalized behavior has familiar, economical, educational, religious, and political implications. The Handbook of Death and Dying takes stock of the vast literature in the field of thanatology, arranging and synthesizing what has been an unwieldy body of knowledge into a concise, yet comprehensive reference work. This two-volume handbook will provide direction and momentum to the study of death-related behavior for many years to come. Book Synopsis The Days of the Dead by : John Greenleigh
Download or read book The Days of the Dead written by John Greenleigh and published by Pomegranate. This book was released on 1998 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Days of the Dead offers a remarkable journey within Mexico's traditional holiday honoring departed ancestors, friends, and family. Each aspect of the multiday festival is carefully explored, from the journey to the cemeteries to spruce up neglected gravesites to the lively marketplace selling breads and candies in the shapes of skulls and skeletons and finally, the peaceful vigil as friends and families crowd the cemeteries to await the arrival of their loved ones through the long night. San Francisco-based photographer John Greenleigh traveled to small towns in Mexico in four different years to document this extraordinary festival. Accompanied by evocative text by cultural scholar Rosalind Rosoff Beimler, the pictures speak eloquently to a ritual that is at once mocking and respectful of death -- and ultimately affirming of human life.
