Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comic History of Greece: From the Earliest Times to the Death of Alexander the Great A preface is usually an apology, - a gratuitous confession of a weakness which the writer would be chagrined to have the reader accredit to him. The critic is thus informed of the heel of Achilles, and very gratefully proceeds to aim his shafts at that point of vulnerability. This book was undertaken for the purpose of getting even with Greece for ever venturing to have a history. Two or three of the unstudious back row of which the author was a conspicuous member at college have expressed, with humiliating frank ness, their astonishment at the writer's associa tion with the project, and their concern for the publisher. At any rate, the author does not forget the exasperating Hellenic topography which he was compelled to describe, nor is he likely to lose sight of the drudgery which began with the Pelas gians and concluded with Philip of Macedon and an apology. Book excerpt: From the team behind the international phenomenon Logicomix -which was on the New York Times bestseller list for ten weeks, won numerous international prizes, and to date has been sold into more than twenty-five languages-comes a new graphic novel, Democracy, written and illustrated by Alecos Papadatos and in collaboration with Abraham Kawa. Democracy opens in 490 B.C., when Athens is at war. The hero of the story, Leander, is trying to rouse his comrades for the morrow's battle against a far mightier enemy. Leander begins to recount his own life, bearing direct witness to the evils of the old tyrannical regimes and to the birth of a new political system. The story that emerges, of the death of the gods and the tortuous birth of democracy, is crammed with extraordinary characters and tells in incident and vivid detail how this greatest of civic inventions came about. We see that democracy was born through a combination of chance and historical contingency-but also through the cunning, courage, and willful action of a group of highly talented and driven individuals.

Book excerpt: This book opens up a neglected chapter in the reception of Athenian drama, especially comedy; and it gives stage-centre to a particularly attractive and entertaining series of vase-paintings, which have been generally regarded as marginal curiosities. These are the so-called `phlyax vases', nearly all painted in the Greek cities of South Italy in the period 400 t0 360 BC. Up till now, they have been taken to reflect some kind of local folk-theatre, but Oliver Taplin, prompted especially by three that have only been published in the last twelve years, argues that most, if not all, reflect Athenian comedy of the sort represented by Aristophanes. This bold thesis opens up questions of the relation of tragedy as well as comedy to vase-painting, the cultural climate of the Greek cities in Italy, and the extent to which Athenians were aware of drama as a potential `export'. It also enriches appreciation of many key aspects of Aristophanic comedy: its metatheatre and self-reference, its use of stage-action and stage-props, its unabashed indecency, and its polarised relationship, even rivalry, with tragedy. The book has assembled thirty-six photographs of vase-paintings. Many are printed here for the first time outside specialist publications that are not readily accessible.

Heroes like Herakles, Achilles and Perseus have influenced Western art and literature for centuries, and today are reinvented in the modern superhero. What does Iron Man have to do with the Homeric hero Odysseus? How does the African warrior Memnon compare with Marvel's Black Panther? Do DC's Wonder Woman and Xena the Warrior Princess reflect the tradition of Amazon women such as Penthesileia? How does the modern superhero's journey echo that of the epic warrior? With fresh insight into ancient Greek texts and historical art, this book examines modern superhero archetypes and iconography in comics and film as the crystallization of the hero's journey in the modern imagination.
