Book Synopsis Come On Home by : James Wendell Moore
Download or read book Come On Home written by James Wendell Moore and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on Scripture and his own stories, Moore explores how to embrace the New Testament theme that happiness is the by-product of being in "right" relationships, of being "at home" with God and with others. More than once, Jesus reminds us that the Great Commandment is to love God and to love other people. And that is what Matthew 6:33 is all about: "But seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness and everything else will fall into place for you." This book contains a discussion guide.

Having been kicked out of the seminary and exiled from his family home, he found himself in London, by accident rather than design. But now, the death of his mother sees him back in the small town where he grew up. The place that chewed him up and spat him out. Reunited with his two brothers, their partners and the local clergy, there are questions that want answering and old scores that need laying to rest. Where do you find home, when your family and faith have abandoned you? An Irish funeral brings out the best and worst in people, and a long night of truths lies ahead.

Book Synopsis African Americans in Sewickley Valley by : Bettie Cole
Download or read book African Americans in Sewickley Valley written by Bettie Cole and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Americans of Sewickley Valley have a history as rich and deep-rooted as the valley itself. Originally pioneered by Quakers and abolitionists sentimental to the cause of enslaved men, Sewickley is noted for containing routes and safe houses for those on the Underground Railroad. Known as an affluent bedroom community, Sewickley is considered the wealthiest municipality along the entire 98-mile stretch of the Ohio River. Early residents brought black servants with them to serve as domestics. As construction increased, many African Americans migrated primarily from Virginia and Kentucky to work in the area as builders. The organization of Sewickley's first African American mission marked the start of a strong and lively course for the African American community. Beginning with Jim Robinson in 1823 through the culmination of today's Come on Home annual reunion, African Americans in Sewickley Valley documents the life and ambition of the African Americans who grew as a vital part of Sewickley's community today.

Download or read book My People It's Time to Come Home written by Travis Galen Smart and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered about your purpose in life? It was a long time before I ever knew I had a purpose. Everything seemed that it was self-serving in life: you were supposed to have a family, a nice house, and a nice car with money in the bank. Then one day it hit me: life was not all about me. I found out that life was about friends and family, about community and relationships. I saw that to me, it was about helping kids by being a coach, and it was my purpose to be a father to four wonderful children, and to be a loving husband to my beautiful wife. This revelation caused me to take a look back at my family's history, and as a result I found some of the greatest stories I have ever heard. I saw love, hope, strength, loyalty, and honor. Most importantly, I saw faith.

Book excerpt: Global capitalism fails young Barcelona couples in this dynamic debut “Heartbreaking and hilarious” —New York Times Book Review “Nopca’s stories, written with clarity and flair, are smart and modern, filled with sharply observed detail. They capture the unease of the times and the flux of contemporary life in Barcelona with wit, wisdom, moments of pure hilarity, and a mixture of sympathy and dark laughter.” —Colm Tóibín, author of Brooklyn and House of Names What happens when the hopes of a generation are dashed by austerity policies and underemployment? Come On Up is a group portrait of contemporary Barcelona, beaten by the economic crisis and divided by a secessionist movement. Always witty, often absurdist, these stories offer a mesmerizing glimpse into the daily lives of couples, families, and neighbors living the new normal of the 21st century. A husband seeks revenge on his wife as they stalk author Peter Stamm; an out-of-work bartender fills his empty days by shoving bananas into the tailpipes of parked cars; a mysterious ritual, spied through a neighbor’s window, arouses deadly spirits. Masterfully paced, the eleven mordant stories of Come On Up draw us into an embattled world whose past is unresolved and whose future is uncertain.
