Download or read book Come and Get It written by Edna Ferber and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1935, this is Pulitzer Prize winner Edna Ferber's sprawling novel of Wisconsin's logging days, when fortunes—and families—were made and broken over king lumber. Barney Glasgow, who had fought his way up from chore-boy in the lumber camps of Iron Ridge to lumber king of Wisconsin, is fifty-three and has much reason to be content when the granddaughter of his old friend, Swan Bostrom, disrupts his life. But destiny provides an ironic escape from folly, and Barney's son carries on the story—a story which was to end in those fatal months that closed the year 1929. Rich with the vibrant qualities of life itself, this is more than the story of Barney Glasgow and his children. It is the story of lumber, and the story of the making and breaking of a fortune, during one of the most fascinating periods in the history of Wisconsin, and of the nation.

Book Synopsis The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal: The seventies by : Martin Popoff
Download or read book The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal: The seventies written by Martin Popoff and published by Apogee Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Collector's Guide To Heavy Metal" was a mammoth of a book crammed with 3700 reviews of metal records through the decades. It elicited much discussion, including close to 70 reviews at the book's Amazon page and counting. Now it is being split into three volumes focusing on the '70s, '80s and '90s respectively with an additional 700-800 reviews added to the 70's. In "The Collector's Guide To Heavy Metal -- Volume I: The Seventies", Martin crams the pages full of reviews and recollections of rarities and monster catalogues from 70s bands not covered in the seminal original tome. As well, many of the original reviews get complete overhauls as Martin re-evaluates the classics and adds trivia titbits that make these records come to life. Join Martin's Seventies Appreciation Society and check out dozens of bands and hundreds of albums you won't see covered in any other rock anthology. This indeed is the book that brings back to the printed page, long-lost acts that rocked hard for their times, bands that built the foundation for the mountainous heavy metal sound of today. Monster Records, the king at finding the super obscure stuff, have provided an exclusive CD sampler for which includes material from some or all of the following: Sorcery, Truth And Janey, Ultra, Cain, Poobah, Negative Space and Survivor.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Tides of Honour and Promises to Keep comes a poignant novel about a young couple caught on opposite sides of the Second World War. In the fall of 1939, Grace Baker’s three brothers, sharp and proud in their uniforms, board Canadian ships headed for a faraway war. Grace stays behind, tending to the homefront and the general store that helps keep her small Nova Scotian community running. The war, everyone says, will be over before it starts. But three years later, the fighting rages on and rumours swirl about “wolf packs” of German U-Boats lurking in the deep waters along the shores of East Jeddore, a stone’s throw from Grace’s window. As the harsh realities of war come closer to home, Grace buries herself in her work at the store. Then, one day, a handsome stranger ventures into the store. He claims to be a trapper come from away, and as Grace gets to know him, she becomes enamoured by his gentle smile and thoughtful ways. But after several weeks, she discovers that Rudi, her mysterious visitor, is not the lonely outsider he appears to be. He is someone else entirely—someone not to be trusted. When a shocking truth about her family forces Grace to question everything she has so strongly believed, she realizes that she and Rudi have more in common than she had thought. And if Grace is to have a chance at love, she must not only choose a side, but take a stand. Come from Away is a mesmerizing story of love, shifting allegiances, and second chances, set against the tumultuous years of the Second World War.

Book Synopsis Come Get These Memories of the Sixties by : Nancy McCarthy
Download or read book Come Get These Memories of the Sixties written by Nancy McCarthy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come Get These Memories of the Sixties My gift to you is the remembering. Life is 99 percent memory and 1 percent now. This book is all about those of you who grew up with me as a teenager in the sixties. It is also specifically about Northwest Detroit and the Isaac Newton Grade School and the Cooley High School kids. It also encompasses a lot of the surrounding area of Detroit. We were white kids in a middle- to upper-middle-class neighborhood that knew the same teachers and hangouts. We experienced the same times of newswar, racial unrest, space exploration, and the confusion we faced through it all. We could forget about it when we played the music. The Motown Sound, the rock and roll, and the folk music were all about us and the world we lived in. Come and take a stroll with me through the sixties. Remember the cars, the TV programs, and the people you hung out with. I hope that when you are reading this, you see something of yourself in it. It is a progression through the years and how one girl grew up through that time while experiencing the ups and downs of life and forever searching for the elusive love of her lifethe man of her dreams. I would imagine that this book would appeal to anyone that lived anywhere during those years and was a teenager. The music was American. We shared it. The cars were American. We shared those and everything else that came to pass during that time. Maybe todays youth that are interested in history, music, and inspiration will find something of interest here also. As unique as we think we are, we all have a lot in common. We are human, subject to growing and learning every day. Thank you to those who played roles in the history of this story, and thank you to my family and friends who have encouraged me over the years to write a book. Well, here it is.

Book excerpt: This book is about the daily life of a group of homeless people who live in camps under some freeway bridges in downtown Los Angeles. It is what is called a narrative ethnography, that is, it consists primarily of what the author said to them and what they said to him. As a research project in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA, Underwood documented conversations with these homeless people for two and one half years. The ethnography unfolds in chronological order to allow the reader to learn about the Bridge People the way the author didóone day at a time. Underwood witnessed the sights, sounds, and smells of this particular form of extreme poverty and developed his research into a discussion of how these people view their existence and the world around them. The author also relates his experience with democratic and humanistic ideals of today.

Book Synopsis Come and Get These Memories by : Brian Holland
Download or read book Come and Get These Memories written by Brian Holland and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the creative force behind Berry Gordy Jr.'s Motown Records in the mid-Sixties, a writing credit from Holland-Dozier-Holland was virtually a guarantee of chart success. From 'Stop! In The Name Of Love' to 'How Sweet It Is To Be Loved by You,' they were the songwriting and production dream team responsible for some of the greatest songs of the twentieth century. In this compelling autobiography, brothers Eddie and Brian Holland share their story for the first time, starting with growing up in Detroit raised by a single mother and their grandmother, before shining a light on their early musical careers. A gifted lyricist, Eddie started out as a solo singer--with Berry Gordy as his manager--before partnering up with Brian and Lamont Dozier, both talented arrangers and producers. When Holland-Dozier-Holland came together, they helped transform Motown Records from a local soul label into a worldwide hit factory, home to international superstars such as Marvin Gaye, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, the Miracles, the Four Tops and the Isley Brothers. After an awe-inspiring tenure they left Motown in 1968, continuing their successes at new labels and with new collaborators for years to come. Featuring honest and open first-hand accounts, Come and Get These Memories is more than just a behind-the-scenes look at Motown Records at its peak: Eddie and Brian set the record straight on both their personal and professional lives and offer a revealing slice of pop-music history."
