Book excerpt: Very low temperature methane would be an ideal moderating material as it has a high hydrogen density and many low frequency modes which facilitate thermalization. Such moderators are in service at two major world facilities, KEK (Japan) and Argonne National Laboratory (USA). Unfortunately solid methane has very low thermal conductivity and is subject to radiation damage making a moderator of this type impractical for use in high intensity beam. This report outlines a possible alternative using small spheres of solid methane in a matrix of supercritical hydrogen at 25 K. 4 figs.

Book excerpt: Moderators using liquid and solid methane and liquid hydrogen are currently in use at major spallation neutron sources. Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE) is planning the use of liquid methane as part of a major update program planned in about three years time. This report presents a general overview of some of these devices and outlines the general engineering design of the proposed LANSCE moderator, including some suggested solutions to the radiation damage problems of methane. Also included is a brief overview of a possible combined H2/Ch4 moderator for high intensity proton beams. 15 figs.

Book excerpt: We measured the neutronic performance of a mixed moderator of polyethylene particles plus liquid hydrogen as the first test of a mixed type moderator. The energy spectrum from the mixed moderator looks like a linear combination of each spectrum from the polyethylene particles and from liquid hydrogen. We obtained 1.2~1.4 times higher cold neutron intensity, but with a longer pulse width than a decoupled liquid hydrogen moderator in the cold neutron region. In the slowing-down region it gave much higher intensity with almost the same pulse width. We found that this type of moderator exhibits better characteristics as a narrow pulse thermal neutron source.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense beams of cold neutrons are produced at several DOE facilities and are used by researchers to study the microscopic structure of materials. Energetic neutrons are produced by a high energy proton beam impacting a target. The fast neutrons are converted to the desired cold neutrons passing through a cryogenic moderator vessel, presently filled with dense cold hydrogen gas. Moderators made from solid methane have demonstrated superior performance to the hydrogen moderators but cannot be implemented on high power sources such as the SNS due to the difficulty of removing heat from the solid blocks of methane. Cryogenic Applications F, Inc has developed the methane pellet formation and transport technologies needed to produce a hydrogen cooled solid methane pellet moderator, potentially capable of being used in a high power spallation neutron facility. Such a methane pellet moderator could double the brightness of the neutron beam. Prior to this work a methane pellet moderator had not been produced or studied. The Indiana University LENS facility is a small pulsed neutron source used in part to study and develop cold neutron moderators. In this project cold neutrons were produced in a solid methane pellet moderator and analyzed with the LENS facility diagnostics. The results indicated that the neutron beam formed by the pellet moderator was similar to that of a solid methane block moderator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the calculated results of neutronic performance of cold moderators in a reference target-moderator-reflector system at the projected 5 MW pulsed spallation neutron source in Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). The cold neutron intensities in present reference model are about 2.3-2.5 times higher than that from the decoupled solid methane (S-CH4) and close to the values obtained at other facilities (LANSCE Upgrade, NSNS, etc.). The H2O premoderator (PM) reduces the energy deposition in a liquid-hydrogen (L-H2) moderator by about a factor of 2 compared with that in a decoupled L-H2 moderator. The dependence of reflector on the neutron intensity and the energy deposition in the cryogenic moderators is also discussed. Although the pulse shapes were not obtained because of time consuming Monte Carlo calculations, we will discuss the pulse shapes based on experiments. (auth).

Book excerpt: This work covers in some detail the application of neutron scattering to different fields of physics, materials science, chemistry, biology, the earth sciences and engineering. Its goal is to enable researchers in a particular area to identify aspects of their work in which neutron scattering techniques might contribute, conceive the important experiments to be done, assess what is required to carry them out, write a successful proposal for one of the major user facilities, and perform the experiments under the guidance of the appropriate instrument scientist. The authors of the various chapters take account of the advances in experimental techniques over the past 25 years--for example, neutron reflectivity and spin-echo spectroscopy and techniques for probing the dynamics of complex materials and biological systems. Furthermore, with the third-generation spallation sources recently constructed in the United States and Japan and in the advanced planning stage in Europe, there is an increasing interest in time-of-flight techniques and short wavelengths. Correspondingly, the improved performance of cold moderators at both reactors and spallation sources has extended the long-wavelength capabilities. Chapter authors are pre-eminent in their field Seminal experiments are presented as examples Provides guidance on how to plan, execute and analyse experiments

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter reviews the most significant developments that have taken place in the design, construction, and operation of new neutron sources as well as the refurbishment programs of others already serving the neutron-scattering community. Such advances in neutron production devices are to be considered in conjunction with impressive achievements in the optimization of neutron delivery systems as well as in neutron instrumentation which overall resulted in a truly remarkable improvement in neutron count rates. As a result, the capabilities of experimental neutron sources are nowadays larger than ever before, despite there being fewer sources available. It is also worth remarking the coming into line of compact, accelerator-driven neutron sources as well as work carried out at small research reactors which, as exemplified during the past decade, have played an important role in helping the large, user-based facilities to carry out development work geared toward the achievement of full performance.
