Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatory logic and lambda-calculus, originally devised in the 1920's, have since developed into linguistic tools, especially useful in programming languages. The authors' previous book served as the main reference for introductory courses on lambda-calculus for over 20 years: this long-awaited new version is thoroughly revised and offers a fully up-to-date account of the subject, with the same authoritative exposition. The grammar and basic properties of both combinatory logic and lambda-calculus are discussed, followed by an introduction to type-theory. Typed and untyped versions of the systems, and their differences, are covered. Lambda-calculus models, which lie behind much of the semantics of programming languages, are also explained in depth. The treatment is as non-technical as possible, with the main ideas emphasized and illustrated by examples. Many exercises are included, from routine to advanced, with solutions to most at the end of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theidea ofa refereedconferencefor the mathematicalprogrammingcommunity was proposed by Ravi Kannan and William Pulleyblank to the Mathematical Programming Society (MPS) in the late 1980s. Thus IPCO was born, and MPS has sponsored the conference as one of its main events since IPCO I at the University of Waterloo in 1990. The conference has become the main forum for recent results in Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization in the non-Symposium years. This volume compiles the papers presented at IPCO XIV held June 9-11, 2010, at EPFL in Lausanne. The scope of papers considered for IPCO XIV is likely broader than at IPCO I. This is sometimes due to the wealth of new questions and directions brought from related areas. It can also be due to the successful application of “math programming” techniques to models not tra- tionally considered. In any case, the interest in IPCO is greater than ever and this is re?ected in both the number (135) and quality of the submissions. The ProgrammeCommittee with 13 memberswasalsoIPCO’slargest. We thankthe members of the committee, as well as their sub-reviewers, for their exceptional (and time-consuming) work and especially during the online committee meeting held over January. The process resulted in the selection of 34 excellent research papers which were presented in non-parallel sessions over three days in L- sanne. Unavoidably, this has meant that many excellent submissions were not able to be included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its start in 1990, the IPCO conference series (held under the auspices of theMathematicalProgrammingSociety)hasbecomeanimportantforumforthe presentation of recent results in Integer Programming and Combinatorial Op- mization. This volume compiles the papers presented at IPCO XI, the eleventh conference in this series, held June 8–10, 2005, at the Technische Universit ̈ at Berlin. The high interest in this conference series is evident in the large number of submissions. For IPCO XI, 119 extended abstracts of up to 10 pages were submitted. During its meeting on January 29–30, 2005, the Program Committee carefully selected 34 contributions for presentation in non-parallel sessions at the conference. The ?nal choices were not easy at all, since, due to the limited number of time slots, many very good papers could not be accepted. During the selection process the contributions were refereed according to the standards of refereed conferences. As a result of this procedure, you have in your hands a volume that contains papers describing high-quality research e?orts. The page limit for contributions to this proceedings volume was set to 15. You may ?nd full versions of the papers in scienti?c journals in the near future. We thank all the authors who submitted papers. Furthermore, the Program Committee is indebted to the many reviewers who, with their speci?c expertise, helped a lot in making the decisions.

Book excerpt: This book provides a postgraduate audience the keys they need to understand and further develop a set of tools for the efficient computation of lower bounds and valid inequalities in integer programs and combinatorial optimization problems. After discussing the classical approaches described in the literature, the book addresses how to extend these tools to other non-standard formulations that may be applied to a broad set of applications. Examples are provided to illustrate the underlying concepts and to pave the way for future contributions.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the First International Conference on IntegrationofAIandORTechniquesinConstraintProgrammingforCombina- rialOptimisation Problems. This new conferencefollows the seriesof CP-AI-OR International Workshops on Integration of AI and OR Techniques in Constraint Programming for Combinatorial Optimisation Problems held in Ferrara (1999), Paderborn (2000), Ashford (2001), Le Croisic (2002), and Montreal (2003). The success of the previous workshops has demonstrated that CP-AI-OR is bec- ing a major forum for exchanging ideas and methodologiesfrom both ?elds. The aim of this new conference is to bring together researchersfrom AI and OR, and to give them the opportunity to show how the integration of techniques from AI and OR can lead to interesting results on large scale and complex problems. The integration of techniques from Arti?cial Intelligence and Operations - search has provided e?ective algorithms for tackling complex and large scale combinatorial problems with signi?cant improvements in terms of e?ciency, scalability and optimality. The bene?t of this integration has been shown in applications such as hoist scheduling, rostering, dynamic scheduling and vehicle routing. At the programming and modelling levels, most constraint languages embed OR techniques to reason about collections of constraints, so-calledglobal constraints. Some languages also provide support for hybridization allowing the programmer to build new integrated algorithms. The resulting multi-paradigm programmingframeworkcombines the ?exibility and modelling facilities of C- straint Programming with the special purpose and e?cient methods from - erations Research

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised edition of the monograph which appeared under the same title in the series Research Notes in Theoretical Computer Science, Pit man, in 1986. In addition to a general effort to improve typography, English, and presentation, the main novelty of this second edition is the integration of some new material. Part of it is mine (mostly jointly with coauthors). Here is brief guide to these additions. I have augmented the account of categorical combinatory logic with a description of the confluence properties of rewriting systems of categor ical combinators (Hardin, Yokouchi), and of the newly developed cal culi of explicit substitutions (Abadi, Cardelli, Curien, Hardin, Levy, and Rios), which are similar in spirit to the categorical combinatory logic, but are closer to the syntax of A-calculus (Section 1.2). The study of the full abstraction problem for PCF and extensions of it has been enriched with a new full abstraction result: the model of sequential algorithms is fully abstract with respect to an extension of PCF with a control operator (Cartwright, Felleisen, Curien). An order extensional model of error-sensitive sequential algorithms is also fully abstract for a corresponding extension of PCF with a control operator and errors (Sections 2.6 and 4.1). I suggest that sequential algorithms lend themselves to a decomposition of the function spaces that leads to models of linear logic (Lamarche, Curien), and that connects sequentiality with games (Joyal, Blass, Abramsky) (Sections 2.1 and 2.6).
