Book excerpt: An illustrated history of Warren County, Ohio, paired with histories of the local companies. More than 200 years of history awaits the visitor to Historic Warren County. Heritage, culture, entertainment, industry - we have it all! The project book will highlight all these wonderful features and more which make this corner of southwest Ohio a destination for families, businesses and visitors alike. Starting in 1797, the newly-opened Northwest Territory provided a refuge for Quaker settlers who arrived in what is now Waynesville after fleeing their home state of South Carolina in protest against the scourge of slavery. The Friends form a still-active community in this diverse county which was named for the first American soldier killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill, General Joseph Warren. Numerous stops along the Underground Railroad dot the gently rolling countryside; quaint villages line the curving rural lanes and historic buildings nestle gracefully alongside modern technology in a thriving county which remains the fastest growing in Ohio. The spirit of freedom which led those brave pioneers is alive and well Historic Warren County.

Book Synopsis Cattle Kingdom in the Ohio Valley 1783–1860 by : Paul C. Henlein
Download or read book Cattle Kingdom in the Ohio Valley 1783–1860 written by Paul C. Henlein and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great beef-cattle industry of the American West was not born full grown beyond the Mississippi. It had its antecedents in the upper South, the Midwest, and the Ohio Valley, where many Texas cattlemen learned their trade. In this book Mr. Henlein tells the story of the cattle kingdom of the Ohio Valley—a kingdom which encompassed the Bluegrass region in Kentucky and the valleys of the Scioto, Miami, Wabash, and Sangamon in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The book begins with the settlement of the Ohio Valley, by emigration from the South and East, in the latter part of the eighteenth century; it ends with the westward movement of the cattlemen, this time to Missouri and the plains, toward the end of the nineteenth century. Mr. Henlein describes the intricate pattern of agricultural activities which grew into a successful system of producing and marketing cattle; the energetic upbreeding and extensive importations which created the great blooded herds of the Ohio Valley; and the relations of the cattlemen with the major cattle markets. An interesting part of this story is the chapter which tells how the cattlemen of the Ohio Valley, between 1805 and 1855, drove their fat cattle over the mountains to the eastern markets, and how these long drives, like the more famous Texas drives of a later day, disappeared with the advent of the railroads. This well-documented study is an important contribution to the history of American agriculture.

Book Synopsis The Freedom of the Streets by : Sharon E. Wood
Download or read book The Freedom of the Streets written by Sharon E. Wood and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilded Age cities offered extraordinary opportunities to women--but at a price. As clerks, factory hands, and professionals flocked downtown to earn a living, they alarmed social critics and city fathers, who warned that self-supporting women were just steps away from becoming prostitutes. With in-depth research possible only in a mid-sized city, Sharon E. Wood focuses on Davenport, Iowa, to explore the lives of working women and the prostitutes who shared their neighborhoods. The single, self-supporting women who migrated to Davenport in the years following the Civil War saw paid labor as the foundation of citizenship. They took up the tools of public and political life to assert the respectability of paid employment and to confront the demon of prostitution. Wood offers cradle-to-grave portraits of individual girls and women--both prostitutes and "respectable" white workers--seeking to reshape their city and expand women's opportunities. As Wood demonstrates, however, their efforts to rewrite the sexual politics of the streets met powerful resistance at every turn from men defending their political rights and sexual power.
Download or read book Dayton Beer written by Timothy R. Gaffney and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of beer in Dayton and the Miami Valley is as old as the region's first settlers, who brought their brewing methods with them from Europe. From humble origins, the Schwind brothers founded a Dayton brewing dynasty. Adam Schantz arrived penniless and amassed a fortune as one of the city's early brewers. Martha Vorce, one of the region's several unheralded woman brewers, was running the Springfield Brewery a decade before Eliza "Mother" Stewart gained fame there as a temperance leader. Although Prohibition swiftly destroyed this flourishing industry, today's local craft brewers promise to keep good beer and good times flowing for many years to come. Join local author Tim Gaffney as he explores the Valley's brewing heritage.
