Book excerpt: Pressurized electro-osmotic dewatering (PEOD) of three sewage sludges and electrofiltration of waste drilling mud were studied with a laboratory chamber simulating closely an industrial filter-press. This work focuses on the influence of conditioning on the electro-dewatering, the comparison between different cell configurations and the process parameters optimization. The influence of pH, salt and polyelectrolytes on the electro-osmotic dewatering of agroindustrial sludge was studied. It was shown the strong impact of the electrolyte concentration on the process and notably that a high salt concentration is detrimental to the electrodewatering. The electrolytic hydroxide and hydronium ions formed at the electrodes change the course of the electro-dewatering. The addition of polymeric coagulants or flocculants has not significant influence on the PEOD of the sludge for the concentrations usually employed in sewage plants. A laboratory parametric study was also carried out in order to optimize the electro-osmotic dewatering. Various cell configurations (with one or two drainage sides, electrode material, initial cake thickness, and electrode/filter cloth position) were compared. The following process parameters were also studied: mechanical pressure, power supply, electrical mode, and timing of current application. The electrofiltration of waste drilling mud at 40 A/m2 accelerated by 4.0-4.6 times the filtration rate without electric field with 0.05-0.13 kWh/kg supplementary removed water. The use of a laboratory cell able to remove electrolysis products generated at the electrodes allows maintaining a constant pH in the filter cake during the electrofiltration.

Book excerpt: Ce travail de recherche constitue une contribution à l'amélioration de la déshydratation mécanique des suspensions minérales en présence de dispersants par filtration/fluidification. Deux procédés de filtration/fluidification mis en œuvre dans un filtre-presse de laboratoire ont été comparés. Le premier procédé implique une filtration simple (FS) avec ajout de dispersant dans la suspension initiale avant filtration. Pour le deuxième procédé, l'ajout est réalisé après filtration avec formation d'une précouche (FAP). La présence de dispersant permet de transformer le gâteau de filtration (à env. 73+-1 % massique) en une suspension de carbonate fluide (de même concentration), et ceci uniquement grâce à un faible apport d'énergie mécanique. Les caractéristiques des gâteaux de filtration obtenus (siccité, résistance spécifique, taille des particules et flocs, potentiel zêta) ont été comparées pour différentes concentrations en dispersant et pour les deux procédés de filtration/fluidification. Des mesures de turbidité et de conductivité, effectuées sur le filtrat, ont mis en évidence le rôle de la précouche vis-à-vis de la protection du tissu filtrant contre le colmatage par les fines particules et du filtrat contre la contamination par le dispersant. Une modélisation de la FAP a été effectuée. Le modèle développé tient en compte la variation de la pression au niveau de l'interface précouche - gâteau. Un autre modèle mathématique a été développé pour décrire la dépendance entre la viscosité, la concentration en solides et la taille des flocs pendant le processus de fluidification des gâteaux. Celui-ci, corrélé à des analyses rhéologiques expérimentales, a permis d'estimer la taille des flocs. Les résultats ont montrés que ces derniers sont plus faibles pour le procédé de FAP. En effet, dans le cas de la filtration simple, à cause d'une perte en dispersant dans le filtrat, la quantité réelle de dispersant qui reste piégé dans le gâteau est inférieure à celle qui reste dans le gâteau formé par filtration avec précouche. Ainsi, le procédé avec précouche est plus efficace d'un point de vue économique et environnemental.
