Book excerpt: The Portuguese Subjunctive: A Grammar Workbook is the first book devoted exclusively to understanding and mastering this challenging area of Portuguese grammar. The clear structure guides students through the six subjunctive tenses, providing them with concise and accurate explanations accompanied by a range of exercises to test and consolidate learning. Each chapter is designed to help students progress from simple to more complex use of the language, with instructions initially set in English before moving to Portuguese, and exercises progressing from simple application to more advanced translation and 'compare and contrast' tasks. This grammar workbook is ideal for intermediate to advanced learners of European or Brazilian Portuguese who wish to master the use of the subjunctive. It can be used as a supplementary in-class text as well as a resource for independent study.

King examines how this leads towards a market-governed control society and also explores new models of agency beyond that of the individual.

Book excerpt: Romanticism was always culturally diverse. Though English-language anthologies have previously tended to see Romanticism as predominantly British, the term itself actually originated in Germany, where it became the banner of a Europe-wide movement involving the profound intellectual and aesthetic changes which we now associate with modernity. This anthology is the first to place British Romanticism within a comprehensive and multi-lingual European context, showing how ideas and writers interconnected across national and linguistic boundaries. By reprinting everything in the original languages, together with an English translation of all non-English material in parallel on the opposite page, it offers a new intellectual map of Romanticism. Material is thematically arranged as follows: - Art & Aesthetics - The Self - History - Language - Hermeneutics & Theology - Nature - The Exotic - Science While focusing on European texts, the inclusion of essays on their North American and Japanese reception means that Romanticism can be seen as a global phenomenon, influencing a surprising number of the ways in which the modern world sees itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume deal with the social and intellectual history of the Western Spanish and Portuguese Jews who established new communities in Northwestern Europe during the seventeenth century. The founders of these communities were mainly former Marranos, descendants of those Jews who had converted to Christianity in the closing years of the Middle Ages. After being separated from the Jewish world for many generations, they returned to Judaism and became an integral part of the Sephardi nation. Amsterdam became the metropolis of this new Jewish diaspora, which was characterised by both its involvement in colonial trade and its intellectual ferment. The reencounter of these Jews with Judaism was a complex affair, and for many of these former New Christians rabbinic Judaism aroused harsh criticism. In order to set the boundaries of their new identity, the leadership of the Sephardi communities of Amsterdam, Hamburg and London adopted a variety of strategies designed to rein in these wayward spirits. This process of socialisation into the Jewish world created a new type of Judaism, and those whose Jewish life was framed by this new amalgam can be considered the precursors of modernity in European Jewish society.
