Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1860, thousands journeyed to the Colorado Territory, beckoned by reports of gold discoveries in the mountains west of Denver. In the early 1870s, W.A.H. Loveland built a railroad connecting Denver to the Clear Creek Mining District-the Colorado Central Railroad. Over the next 28 years, other lines were established, bought, sold, extended, and merged to service the mining towns of Black Hawk, Central City, Idaho Springs, and Silver Plume. In 1898, the Union Pacific, Denver & Gulf, and the Denver Leadville & Gunnison were combined to form the Colorado & Southern Railway. After more than 40 years of dedication to the Clear Creek District, the railroad was scrapped in 1941. However, tourism would revitalize the area, and in the years to come a group of enthusiasts began to rebuild a portion of the old right of way. Toady, the spirit of the C&S is alive again, and rail fans can make the same journey over "The Loop" that thrilled tourists a century ago.

Why this special interest in the Centennial State's railroads which span 120 years? One reason is Colorado's geography -- relatively flat plains in the eastern third of the state, the rugged Rocky Mountains in the central and southwest areas. Colorado's railroads traverse all these regions -- from a 2285 foot elevation to the heights of 14,000 foot peaks. This geographical configuration makes Colorado railroading second to none.

Book excerpt: "There's a high level of excitement and interest in the Rio Grande's narrow gauge lines today. Perhaps more so now than at any other time since the narrow gauge lines were built. There has always been a certain romance of the rails where 3-foot-gauge trackage is concerned, and even more so with those lines that ran through the scenic wonders of our country, such as the Rocky Mountains. Dreamer and railroad builder General William J. Palmer projected a railroad to Mexico City, but instead his 3-foot railroad went west, to Salt Lake City and Ogden." --From inside of book jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1800s, Denver and Rio Grande Railroad founder William Jackson Palmer had a dream of building a railroad from Denver south to Mexico City. While his dream ended at Santa Fe, New Mexico, greater profits were realized by extending his narrow-gauge railroad west across Colorado and New Mexico to Durango and the mines at Silverton. Rocky Mountain railfans and history buffs have long been familiar with the two remaining segments of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad's narrow-gauge route: the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. These two railroads carry thousands of tourists every year. But what about the 111 miles between the two? What happened to the segment between Chama and Durango? Long since abandoned, travelers today can track this route along the highways and back roads of Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. With maps and historic and contemporary photographs, this book points the way to rediscovering this lost trackage. Branch lines, including logging railroads and the Farmington Branch, are also included, so the traveler has a complete guide to finding this long-gone section of the narrow-gauge railroad.

Book excerpt: Today one man is specially recognized as one of the founders of the narrow gauge railroad preservation movement in the United States. He is Robert W. Richardson, who with a friend started the Narrow Gauge Motel in a remote section of Colorado in 1949. Later he and a friend began the Narrow Gauge Museum in Alamosa, which helped initiate the safekeeping of narrow gauge rolling stock, hardware and paper memorabilia. The collection he and Cornelius Hauck started, now housed at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, has grown so large it requires a number of staff and volunteers to catalog and maintain. In this nostalgic volume, Bob recounts his early days as an editor, advertising coordinator, member of the U.S. Armed Forces, motel owner and later as head of the largest narrow gauge railroad museum in the country. Primarily, it highlights Bob's life as an avid narrow gauge fan during the last two decades the Colorado Narrow Gauge still operated as a common carrier. Hardbound, 12 x 9", 200 pages, 267 color and black/white photograghs, maps, charts and ephemera.

Book excerpt: In the 1880s, the Denver & Rio Grande began building its three-foot railroad toward the San Juan Mountains alongside the Animas River and the budding community of Durango. The D&RG quickly established itself in Durango, constructing a depot as well as a 45-mile connection to the regional mining hub of Silverton. Over 60 years, the towns, the railroad, and the mines it served would weather plummeting silver values and a turbulent economy. By the end of World War II, declining freight volumes left the future of the railroad in doubt, but by the late 1940s, a growing number of train enthusiasts were journeying to Durango for one last ride. The new popularity of the Silverton Branch brought rail fans to the area in increasing numbers through the 1950s. Today the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad continues to preserve the region's railroading past and has become a unique aspect of the history of Southwestern Colorado.
